  4. I used budget bleach (very important to be budget, only has half the harse chemicals as the quality stuff) & rinsed throughly then wiped with a cloth.

    Hello

welcome, im sure we will be able to help if needed.
  6. As i am new to africans, i have purchased four fryeri juveniles on trademe. thats what they are labelled as anyway & i am going to pick them up on monday night in auckland. has anyone got any pics they could post or email me so i know what they should look like, wouldn't want to end up with something that isn't what they are supposed to be (hybrids etc).
  7. certainly my male angel eats the eggs, were you refering to angels?
  8. you are looking for a SAP (south american puffer) puffer aka green spotted puffer. sorry my bad, is a SAP aka brazilian puffer not green spotted. heres a link to previous thread. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/previo ... sc&start=0
  9. great, thanks. will do.
  10. its a bit brighter than my community tank but not insanely bright. i'll give it a go for a couple of days & see how it progresses i think. thanks
  11. im so happy i got some, they have got such great personalties
  12. Hi all, i have just got three yellow labidochromis today. they were put in their new home at 10am this morning. they have been hiding all day. i figured this was due to new surroundings. however i have just proven this theory to be incorrect. i bought a new bulb for their light, its a 15w 18" "power glo". i have turned it off, with the room light still on & they have come out from hiding to play & interact with me (they are following my hand etc). i turned the light back on & they promptly went back into hiding again. is this light too bright? it is a very bright light that makes the tank & fish look great. anyone had the same problem?
  13. trethewey granite & marble, portage rd new lynn italian stone, portage rd new lynn granite workshop, glenfield psp stonecraft, glenfield stone warehouse, north shore somewhere just off the top of my head, also you could look under granite kitchen benchtops in the yellow pages for others.
  14. im sure if you went to any granite company they would be happy for you to take some, will save them paying for disposal.
  15. I used to work at Trethewey Granite & Marble. they are sandstone tiles that met my hammer.
  16. Hi all, today i have got my first african cichlids. Have had this tank up & running for 3 weeks now. got the last bits & pieces i needed today, new light tube etc. I have only put three yellow labiochromis in for now to make sure the water is ok. all the tests i did for the water came back fine, there was some dust type stuff leach out of the sandstone so am a little cautious at this stage. once these have survived for a week I will get 10 or so more. I wish I had've done this sooner, the fish have been in the tank for two hours & my wife & I are already planning a 300L cichlid tank. here are some pics: tank: http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g183/ ... is002a.jpg Yellows: http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g183/ ... is014a.jpg Yellow: http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g183/ ... is008b.jpg
  17. my substrate is one inch of sand & one inch of gravel so that would help it to hold.
  18. i have only had the roots rot once. that was under the point I accidentially bent the stalk. I regularly move the cabomba around, i put the stalk parallel between my 1st & 2nd fingers then stab my fingers into the gravel pushing in the stalk. then pack the gravel in around the stalk. does this make sense to anyone?
  19. warm your room to an even 26 deg & you shouldnt get condensation & you could unplug the heater too
  20. in my opinion the factory tanks over 4 foot look to long as they are often the same height & depth (front to back) as the smaller ones, i would go for a custom made over 4 foot so it can be made taller & deeper to look more in proportion.
  21. i would say that public water supplies would have to be chlorinated by law or regulation.

    Trial Tank

Ok, I have my tank totally set up now. it has been running for three weeks now. I used 60L out of my community tank to start the filtration etc. I have made a wall in the tank for hiding places with sand stone tiles & have added marble chip for a substrate. The PH is well over 7.6 (thats as high as my test kit measures). The temp is 26'. What other parameters are important for the africans? I will also take a sample of my water to the store when i purchase my new fish.
