  1. yes but you may need a fish or two to make some waste to help the cycling
  2. go to petplanet.co.nz for aquaone canisters. i have bought two off him now & they are excellent. go for the CF1000 so you can use it for a larger tank when you upgrade.
  3. im into my second year of fish keeping & have never used anything but a ph test kit. I dont even bother using that any more
  4. great choice of fish, africans are great. i have electric yellows, electric blues & red zebras. I also suggest you get a canister filter to run as well as the hood filter, i have done this & it keeps the water crystal clear.
  5. the fish adapt, my community tank ph is 7.5 & african is 7.8. both sets of fish thrive in their tanks
  6. well after this im sure sales of water con will plummit
  7. yip unless you have had water settling for three days, the chlorine disperses after a few days, quicker if its agitated by an air pump
  8. i use a chamois that is used for car paint or a damp tea towel. i dont have any problems with water marks.
  9. if it was me, i would select the aquaone tank. they are more common IMO & parts may be easier if you need em. at the end of the day a tank just holds water but the other parts like pump etc could fail if not well made or company doesnt have too much experience. i have a sunsun tank, the first design was rubbish IMO but i have the third series & they had ironed out the bugs by then & have had no bad experiences at all.
  10. thats what the swivel is for, weighting the line through the piping. as for weighting the cucumber etc, i use a lead weight that came with plants i have purchased
  11. i often dont see my bn for days on end. they are nocternal feeders so that may have something to do with it
  12. i use a sand base & have a gravel top layer. those fish should be fine but i would recommend having at least a 1200L/ph or two 1000L/ph. On my 3 footer i have thw hood filter (900L/ph) & a CF1000 (1000L/ph) which keeps the water crystal clear. The discus need really good clean water or the don't do well. I can recomend petplanet for well priced canister filters, especially the aqua one CF1000 or CF1200.
  13. wow, thats certainly different. not what i expected a soft shell turtle would look like
  14. when i did exactely what your about to do I put substarte & rocks etcthat was throughly washed then half filled the new tank, took half the water & the filter from the original tank & put em into the new one. I then put my least favourite fish in the new tank first. left em for two days & gradually added the rest over the next few days. i had no losses at all.
  15. Yeah maybe, or he forgot her birthday, their anniversary or just refused to hang out the washing  im sure they'll sort it.
  16. mine is my home made pipe cleaner. i use it to clean the inside of my canister piping, spraybar for wet/dry filter & the spraybar for my canister
  17. they spawn every 3 to 4 weeks & have never been fighting like this. they normally chase anything else in the tank but have not fought like this. they have not sucessfuly breed yet, i let them eat their eggs.
  18. 40 tanks to move, ouch! that would've been hard enough without any furniture.
  19. & from what i've read about em they do not recommend putting em into a small tank when they are small as it stunts their growth
  20. Hi all, does anyone else ave a pair of angels that the smaller female dominates the larger male. personally i think its a simple case of "yes dear" but she seems to be taking it a bit far. below are pics of the damage, i have never had this happen before so is there anything to worry about as far as the injuries? female & the beaten husband
  21. I bought 10kg thinking thats what i needed for my two footer & only used about a third of it with it being an inch deep opn the bottom.
  22. Hi all, i have noticed in the last 24 hours that my red zebras that i got on tuesday have developed silver patterns on the outside of their gills. when looking at them it looks like tin foil stuck to them. the pics below dont show them as bright as they really are but you'll get the idea. also is it common for them to have the gill area a darker red than the rest of them? &
  23. i paid that for 10kg
