  1. thats not really fully aquatic though... or is it did they hang out on the driftwood or in the water more? mine hang out on the driftwood, probably because thats where i fed them. cant be bothered with daphnia and bloodworms, just add crickets once a week. very easy care, breeding size from 1 to 2years. Once breeding or back in water id chuck in bloodworms, my japs use to breed just about all year round. is amazing how slow the growth can be with insufficient food and or environment...much like frogs.
  2. so you can keep them fully aquatic from the day they hatch? I thought they needed a bit of driftwood or atleast something so they could get out of water if need be...
  3. Way i understand it the fire bellied newts we have go through a terrestrial stage once morphed up until theyre of size to breed? best to have minimal land, but still some land is almost a must i thought? even for when they go back in to the aquatic state come breeding size...... best way ive found is appx 2 inch water and a peace of driftwood in the middle of the tank (that way fruit fly are on an island/not so likely to escape). if want to go over the top put some javamoss on it. Reptilez - you can put the fruitfly container in the tank with a small hole in the lid. Or even better just open up the container and tap out a few into the tank. Leaving some flies in the culture should help it keep producing longer/give you a second maybe even third lifecycle. Just punching a hole in lid doesnt always produce as much.
  4. Avondale spider is a different species to the Black tunnel web Black tunnel webs are native (aussie probably tries to claim them  ). Not sure on legalities...but assume theyre ok to keep?
  5. i got prices down here last year and was about $11-12 per sheet. $15 for the harder stuff/different grade = more insulation or something like that worth shopping around, insulation/poly specialists were much cheaper than hardware stores or atleast was when i rang around down this way.
  6. dont worry about them drowning, they can swim rather well beleave it or not . but even still best to just have a shallow water dish. They will snif it out and drink from it when they feel the need
  7. go easy on water/mist, want environment dry. i mist if i see theyre about to shed but havent bothered recently and seem ok. never seen this before and given the water hasnt helped. Prob best to follow what LA has mentioned and just leave it until next shed. wouldnt recommend rubbing or peeling skin off, let them do what they do. As long as its eating well then it should shed completely next time around.
  8. bloodworms ok once they get use to them...wiggle around with tweezers in front of them etc. daphnia good for keeping the water clean. nt sure the newts eat much in the water once morphed though. pinhead crickets are the best food. wingless ff ok but dont feed out too much at a time and best to have a very fitting lid (fine fabric under lid maybe) otherwise they end up getting out. whiteworms, and aphids good treats
  9. yes beast to build your own not sure you will get a permit for exo terra, may do. probably best to contact doc. use to be some plans or ideas on http://www.reptiles.org.nz/ for enclosures. i cant find it but its likely still there somewhere
  10. Welcome. Nice avatar to.
  11. if u can afford some zebs then whats a few hundy more for a nice new tank
  12. give it a mist & maybe a warm shallow bath if it doesnt shed in the next couple of days....does seem a bit long for them to shed. unlike bds they normally completely shed within the day... i think???, cant say ive ever taken much notice  ps dont pull the skin off either however tempting it maybe, let them do what they do.
  13. double bagging seems to be industry standard, dosent take up anymore room, makes rounded corners more often than not. i could be wrong but not so much for insulation but more so incase theres a leak, not alway obvious if a slow one when first bagged. and dont want couriers to end up with water in their vans thats for sure
  14. I could be wrong but I think fastways only do overnight in same island?. 48 hours island to island, probably ok but overnight is best for live goods.... Courier post are all good. Ive sent alot of parcels in past year or 2 and less than 1% delayed or slightly damaged.. Top effort. Generally overnight is am delivery to business's and just next day for home address's etc.
  15. camera shy. . . . . . . t who said whistlers are cute
  16. Standard diet (staple) should be crickets, flies and locusts. Treats should be mealworms, waxworms, moths and maybe some woodlice. Above is jmo. There seems to be very mixed opinions out there especially in regards to mealworms. But I can say now with complete confidence that you cant go wrong with crickets, locusts and flies.
  17. she was a goooood nite alright. or was i just saying good nite. i guess we will never know
