  1. Similar frogs have sold for around 1k each in the past. Id like to pay that for this frog but cant atm. Its almost priceless in my eyes....until someone breeds it, or another
  2. haha i was going to say a big axie would probably eat the cubes whole
  3. I know what you mean. But hard to replicate their natural diet in a captive environment. Cats eat similar things to bts. Live food is best but expensive and not really needed for these imo. I had 14 young skinks last year that i raised mainly on crickets and roaches. They were unbeleavbly fast. Id never seen bts move so fast and they thrived on them. But as they got older they became less interested. Maybe i gave them too much cat food and they just became lazy i dunno. My female skink i had was eating live food like a nutter over summer, up until she gave birth. Then seemed to loose interest in them. Maybe i just gave her too much other food when trying to fatten her up again. Like i said though they are scavengers, so i guess they feed on all sorts. Skinks, lizards, rats & mice, birds, snails and a large part of the diet is carrion/dead animals in the wild. Catfood replaces the carrion. Theyre not like beardies whom pretty much need live food. Cant go wrong with live food. But with all that leaf litter i wouldnt go there with crickets, they will just hide. Could hand feed them i guess. Locusts maybe ok but theyre very jumpy, cant say i tried them with bts. I dunno im no expert i just did what works...
  4. Tbh i mainly just use cat food pouches for the meat/staple. Whiskas caserole with vege. Also mix my own salad in with the cat food atleast once a week (nasturtium leaves, mustard, dandelion leaves, clover and flowers from them all every now and then) and dead insects. The skinks will eat live but not always. I use to give them a bit of raw ox heart but havent done that for some time. They like bannana to, but probably best as a treat. Dust food with calcium a couple of times a week. multivitamin every other week. Skinks are scavengers they will eat all sorts if it smells good (to them)
  5. Very nice setup Food, insects and lean meat, eggs, bit of mixed vege, creamed corn etc small frogs, rats & mice etc as a treat but most prefer not to go there
  6. im seeing double  dennisisawesome - they grow pretty quick if fed well and water kept clean. can be full grown within a year, definitely 2. mince is dodgy i wouldnt go there. any lean red meat is ok though
  7. probably just over fed Caryl they are lazy though, but if not fed too much they will even come upto the surface of water and feed from your hand. Well sort of, i dangle meat or bugs on waters surface so they see the movement. Most of the time i just chuck it in though and they find it. Otherwise i use to put on kebab stick then put in from of them etc they eat worms, crickets, locusts, fish, ox heart or any lean red meat. no substrate i find best.
  8. Sounds like old age....In saying that though a bit weird shes catching things. My uncle used to feed rabbits to his cats on the farm. Reckons they wouldnt eat anything else after that. Maybe shes got a taste for something and has just become really fussy. Good luck, sorry i cant be of more help.
  9. i looked at the turtle/photo earlier, and thought oh yea smallish, probably male...didnt even notice how close it was to the light
  10. it is an interesting one on how to cull. probably well worth a discussion. . i know ive wondered what people's stance was on this in the past. i thought most things cold blooded were best to be put in the freezer but i dunno where i get that from. i think a decent bang on the head is probably best. freezer seems ok and for me would be the nicer option as appose to banging it on the head. never had a problem disposing of fish..they just go to the turtles. is that cruel, or just putting them to good use? could say jeez whats with people being so up tight and taking things the wrong way
  11. fair enough, as long as your not 2sneaky.
  12. nothing like a bit of friendly discussion at least one of the turtles in this auction looks to be female, http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 584260.htm and atleast one of the ones in this auction looks to be female (24cm is to big for a male i think) http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 576434.htm
  13. Nice one, very likely. Did you get them from me or someone in Auckland? Biggest I had seen, had another similar sized but found her dead on the bottom of the pond last year :-?
  14. Surprisingly I dont think Ive ever had to cull any, but if i did i would probably put them in the freezer.
  15. oops just edited my message and now i see youve posted
  16. Nice to see your still lerking, i thought that might get a response Sorry I stand corrected, just re-read your old posts. Had my wires crossed. Im not bitchin but you claim to get about 50/50 male to female....maybe you do. Just seems theres much more males around than females. Maybe Kim Shirley produces just males, wonder if she will pop up
  17. yes most enclosures ive seen online seem to be more height than floor space.
  18. true, does anyone know if the reeves are tsd? hot house claims theyre not...but there definitely seems to be more males around then females..
  19. .......................................
  20. infertile females? how does one manage that.. i sold my female and a coupld of males, she had never laid for me but was huge :-? i just thought maybe they could be sexed at a young age...you dont see many in shops that are as small as the red ears.
  21. yes seems that not many have been on the market in the past. but also seems a few hit the market about 2/3years ago
