  1. I confess, I was eating them religiously.....now im holy
  2. im in rehab.....od'd on mealworms
  3. They've done the wrong research. Thinking you know how to look after an animal/reptile etc often isnt enough. Not all cases are black and white and yes sometimes people give incorrect info which can set others up to fail. But sometimes what works for some just doesnt work for others. Some times good old common sense is all thats needed, i mean if one of your pets is attacking the other then common sense would tell you something isnt right. And its your duty to figure it out asap. That turtle didnt get in that state over night.
  4. Possibly but people really need to take responsibility for their own actions. I wish more people would do the research before they get pets. A very sad, case.
  5. lol smidey. I reckon its pretty budget
  6. just need a couple of bits of timber to go across the top of the tank from back to front, or even better a couple of bits of metal pipe or similar. then hang light on that. if wanting to use a heat mat then yes prob best to get rid of tile platform. glass lid ok but you dont want a warm tank, better off having a warm end and a cool end i think which is easier achieved without a lid. possibly get away with a constant temp through out tank for blue tongues but i opt for a hot end and a cool end (just personal pref) could stick one of these under your tile platform http://www.trademe.co.nz/Building-renov ... 909333.htm even cheaper from bunnings i think. Need to know how to wire a plug (thermostat aswel is even better) on or get sparky to do so. I would take basking platform out or put that down the other end of tank, they normally go into caves to get away from the sun so having basking above it doesnt make sense to me. easiest way is just a basking bulb (spotlight)above a rock for heat and a fluro for uv. if temp in house doesnt get below 15C then should'nt need any heating at night time. if it does you want an emitter or heat mat pref on thermostat.
  7. why not just hang the fluro in the tank.. Ceramic emitters are good. Some brands better than others. Elstein seem to last. Good for night time heating but heat pads are cheaper to run and last longer. Only thing i dont like about emitters is you need to be onto it because if it blows its not as obvious as when a bulb does.
  8. ive got a couple about the same age (7months but age doesnt mean much, size does ) and i found what appears to be a sperm plug in the water bowl the other day. Ive separated them now as there was a bit of tension between them, one seems much more dominant. Will see if both setups get plugs or which one is leaving them behind. Otherwise time for winter then fatten up and reintroduce when breeding size (which doesnt seem far off).
  9. Possibly too cold. I try keep golden bells (l. aurea) over 20C, aim for 22-24C. Anything less they seem to get pretty slow. Southern bells do better at lower temps so that could be why theyre growing faster....
  10. Thats sad. Big can definitely eat small. Not alway but its inevitable if they get a little hungry. Even just a slight size difference can be enough to tempt fate.
  11. oh if you mean my pic..then yes its normally brown (whistling tree frog/brown tree frog). Its just being clever and trying to blend with the driftwood i think. Theyre amazing at trying to camouflage into the surroundings. Golden bells even more so
  12. think they all have white bellies? bar males getting a greyish sometimes yellowish tinge to the throat
  13. Yes whats approx temp? could just be that the southerns do tolerate and likely grow better at a lower temp. interesting though if it is eating more and still not keeping up. It will become dinner itself soon
  14. who was going to eat them? nice frogs, gotta love pic 1.
  15. Sorry to hear that Alan . Ive been experimenting on one group of frogs here (about 10-15 in that tank) and fed them mainly just mealworms from day one...Seem fine but when still small a few had lumps on their stomachs. But that has gone now and they seem fine. Im still not game enough to feed them to my albinos or beardies like i use to though :-? Frogs do seem better at digesting them as appose to beardies. But Im still not completely convinced theyre safe. p.s do an autopsy. A bit yuck to have to do, but would be interesting to see what you find in there?
  16. woops. i really should proof read a bit more. thats great, your the second person who's recently told me their frogs started chirping after eating the crickets
  17. I give mine the same salad i give my beardies. Nasturtium, mustard and dandelion leaves as the bulk of the salad. Little bit of clover, oregano. Parsley very occasionally. And flowers once a week when feeding daily or atm probably once a month. (but not much flowering here atm anyway other than nasturtium and some clover). this is probably ok for a general guide for vege http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.c ... ition.html Ive never seen them eat the greens on its own hence mix it up with catfood, that way if theyre hungry theyl eat it ps 25C is too cold imo, want 30-35C catfood comes in convenient pouches. Can get caserole with vege etc. Dog food is probaby ok to, but variety is key. Insects, fruit, vege, pinkies and baby birds etc probably best.. I put food in, let them eat then take out as soon as they walk off otherwise they like to walk through it and make a mess silly skanks
  18. He's a worry eh. I like insects but so much that I want to try eating them
  19. morcs - they really do like the bannana eh, i mix it up with the catfood and greens so they dont just eat the banana
  20. spinach is a bit dodgy. some sites say its a no no, others say occasionally. shouldnt brumate unless temp has dropped or maybe of decent size and just feels its the time of year? ive still got 2 which are young but about 40cm, and theyve really slowed down in past month or so. Only feeding 2/3 times a week wher as prior almost every day. They seem sweet but its like they know its winter (temp has dropped a bit here but i still have a good 30C basking rock) good luck i wouldnt worry too much as it doesnt look overly skinny.
