  1. wow, such weird looking fish. great photo's
  2. this is a vid of one of them http://www.youtube.com/user/nzexotics#p ... wIcz24Ckc0 there's a vid of some young whislters in the other setup on my youtube too, setup has changed since though, will try get a pic later
  3. i would be tempted to go without a filter in anything smaller then a 1m tank. Maybe a small internal pump, pumping water from one area to the next (create a waterfall/river etc) and use the plants and substrate to filter the water. Could go undergravel filter, or drill holes and plumb (hides hose's) a canister filter to it. probably over kill though. i have two exoterra's the same size as yours. no filters, one has a water pump to sprinklers for the plants, other nothing at all, both look good. So many ways to attack a setup, keep it simple and find what works for your and you cant go wrong
  4. Thanks for the positive comments Just the local river, few big rocks along the bottom, then finer stuff (with a few chunky bits) on top to form river and island etc. Laid xmas moss ontop and away she went. As long as you have a filter it should clear up pretty quick, once cycled like a fish tank it becomes crystal clear . If i really disturb the river bit it still gets cloudy, but clears within an hour or two now. That tank has a canister filter onit, so there's plenty of filtration for the frogs and few tadpoles that are currently in there.
  5. my tanks are currently low light so no glosso attempts atm. good point, you would think koura would be thriving with all the pest plants around. try an earth worm, mine went mad for them last night. koura was a bit slow to start off but then walked over a worm and thats when things got a bit mental lol. ps past your bedtime isnt it
  6. lol my koura tank has a bit of wood floating aswel, wish it would hurry up and sink. will they destroy mosses firmly rooted to rocks? ive got a bit of xmas moss in my koura tank and so far all good....
  7. Cheers, I'll have to flood it at some stage  hopefully the xmas moss doesnt come away from the substrate. The bell frogs will out grow that tank pretty quick and once they get bigger will make a mess. So I might put whistling tree frogs in there. Or maybe even out with the frogs in with the shirmp
  8. nice stand jn87. mean enclosure there broms. four weeks on, my frog tank is coming along nicely. this was it mid december. (posted pics back on page 6 of this thread i think) now water level is suppose to be much lower, just need to make an adaption for the water outlet. then the river from left to right is more obvious.
  9. Im using one but my room isnt insulated, guessing if it was the whole room temp would drop considerably. Anyway with it pointing directly on two 4' tanks, it keeps them at 16-20C while the rest of the room has been creeping upto 30C. Would be 35-40C without air con in there. So working well here, may try find some cheap insulation though as I can see the power bill going for a hike. Better than a chiller if you can cool the tanks and the room 30C inside 28C out here and so muggy today, glad the fish are happy though lol
  10. Hey Stella, did the portable air con unit work well?
  11. http://www.reptiles.org.nz/uploads/PDF/ ... 202010.pdf
  12. how long ago was that reptilenutt? they were only declared an unwanted organism recently i think. No longer can keep/get a permit was my understanding.....
  13. If they cant tell someone what to do with it, then there's something seriously wrong. Its not about doing their dirty work. Given its now public knowledge skaterreptilez has a rainbow skink in possession, I just thought he/she may want to save them selves any trouble. Maybe you have some other suggestions for the public.... Im aware of what could happen, what do you want me to do about it?.
  14. i would stick it in the freezer or bang on the head. if you want to be sure ring DOC.
  15. not at all, infact its probably not the best food for them. just convenient and they seem to do ok with it as part of their diet. lots of insects and a few pinkies (mice) would be better.
  16. read an article somewhere the other day, said wild koura normally around 10cm, captive bred/raised 12-15cm. generally slow growing though from what i can gather. considered an adult at something like 3cm.....not sure if that means they can breed that young but cool if they can. the little ones are pretty much exact replicas of the adults, maybe just lacking mature sexual organs. cool critters, neat to watch them moving the gravel around.
  17. Nice fish, have they ever spawned? Didnt you post photos of bullies with spawn a while back, i cant find it? Im finding it tricky to get good pics of fish, nowhere near as easy as frogs. Good challenge none the less.
  18. blue tongues get more meat (i use catfood. its replace's the carrion they would normally scavenge for and eat in the wild), insects occasionally (should be more) same salad as bd and some banana. mashed all together so they eat it all the good stuff . bds - insects and vege. some fruits ok occasionally. crickets and or locusts as staple. mealworms about once a month. salad i aim for 80% leafy greens (mustard, dandelion, nasturtium leaves (need to check that actually) 20% flowers, clover and or grated carrot. its not an exatct science here and im still very much learning, but thats basically what i feed.
  19. i see a heater in there, tropical koura and bullies?
  20. vid of shrimp tank can be seen here http://www.youtube.com/user/nzexotics changed tank around again since. took koura out and rocks on left out, added 3 upland bullie, almost have the pump hidden lol. havent seen the shrimp today maybe just hiding. need a couple more, 3 isnt really enough
  21. check out below website for vege if you havent already. http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.c ... ition.html try getting more of the vege highlighted in green included in the diet. lettuce and spinach are very questionable, i dont use those at all.
  22. Hatchlings reach 15cm at around 4weeks. So yeah sounds small for a year. Should be nearly double that imo. Time will tell if its permanently stunted or not. What are you feeding it, basking and night time temp, reptile bulb etc?
