  1. Light not needed but if you want plants to grow a fluro does the trick otherwise anywhere indoors just try avoid direct sun on tank especially afternoon sun heater not needed either (imo more trouble than theyre worth) keeping them cool in summer is more an issue and if u want them to breed youd be better of without a heater, also go easy on places for them to hide as you will hardly ever see them (especially if young newts) good setup for first year or so; plastic tank ($20) rock or driftwood for them to climb on oxygen weed/indian fern 2-3inchs of water other than feeding, sorted......
  2. yea some lfs stock them otherwise check trademe  or someone on here may have some to spare takes a good 2days i find before new cultures start producing enough to feed out
  3. is it just me or is there an obvious solution? buying from a shop and locally is probably a good thing imo
  4. all looks like riccia to me
  5. I thought u wanted to wait until santa came down the chimney  have you got the tank and live food sorted, how many newts u looking for?

  10. if u mean riccia? then as far as im aware its legal
  11. there was a cooter on tm within past 3-4years - I wunder if hot house got tht 1 shame theres no pure cooters been bred for nz
  12. cool thanks, i always thought they're tubifex but when scooping some out today i noticed some atleast 3inch long i said the exact same thing to some one else on another forum just recently, then i swiped it
  13. frogs are kool huh, id suggest getting a fly trap or whatever theyre called on tm
  14. kool  never fed the waxmoths to newts im just geussing but dont think theyd be quick enough to catch them, do u mean waxmoth larvae/waxworms i dont see why not but theyre tricky livefood imo wingless fruitflies are good for the young (just morphed) and i also found the larvae a good food source, just put a lid (with no holes) on the fruit fly culture so they cant breathe and they all go up the sides and then open culture and scrape out with knife etc only thing with fruitfly is they escape and can end up all over the place i found aphids will be around the garden soon, check rose plants etc whiteworms are also good for feeding on land or in water once newts are abit bigger bloodworms in the wateraswell but may need to encourage them at first - get tweezers and hand fed at first as they like to see the movement i think ive forgotten some other livefoods, im sure others will beable to help out also - maybe even start u off with some starter cultures, if u get stuck i should have all of the above going again in a couple off weeks try the search thing uptop i think whiteworms and fruitfly breeding methods have been discussed b4, i gtg or ill be here all day haha hth
  15. Found these in one of my dirty troughs, i thought these were tubifex but some are getting bigger than i thought tubifex got to and sorta look striped like tiger worms
  16. sounds abit like petrol theft - alot of petrol stations are becoming prepaid during the day now as people just keep helping them selves and cops dont have the time to be dealing with it, makes one wunder what else goes on tht they dont have the resources for :-?
  17. not sure if it changes the ph but daltons propagting mix is comonly used in planted tanks, i had nothing but good results with it - can buy at farmlands etc
  18. in shops your doing well if you find them and your doing even better if under $80 each on tm you see young around summer time for $40 upwards generally breeding pairs $300 + so pays to buy young great pets fully recomended to all

  23. tht would really get up my nose  but seriously stuff that yikes
  24. Loocusts -straight perlite worked well for me- had no luck with vermiculite - sand, potting mix etc not sure why just the way it is for me. thing i dislike is collecting the grass for them so if your happy todo that then theyre all good once going - kept mine at 28-30 bottom of fridge and about 40 at the top, they sorta went up and done as need be to regulate there temps- but try kp the bottom at what ever u incubate the eggs at as this is the level ur eggs are at! Crickets i find the vermiculite way better then perlite otherwise straight pottingmix also works. trouble with these is they eat each other , and seem tempramental in the respect they dry out fast All good fun hth
  25. http://www.parrots.co.nz/forsale.cfm could be worth a try otherwise they tend to pop up more around summer time in shops, trademe on here even . . someone else may know of some closer to you though, good luck and welcome to the forum
