  1. just to point out the obvious what about putting lids or covers over your fish, cats will be cats.
  2. hey thanks for that, looks like i may of struck it lucky for once as its definately not the stuff i use to find as a kid in streams etc (thats banned going on the links posted above ), anyway just did a google image search on "Elodea canadensis" and looks the same as what ive got , (thanks to the forum member who gave me the heap of plants to begin with) :bounce:
  3. just posted this pic in another thread and thought hmm ive always wundered about tht plant, all leaves are evenly spaced of stems etc, gets upto about an inch wide, doesnt like frost but grows ok in coldwater aquarium with fluro etc can get better pics if nd be, cheers
  4. found some more pics jap pair (male up top) ---------- female jap laying below jap pair female up top below chinese female newt pole dancing / laying eggs  random youngin tryna make a breake for it :bounce:
  5. Yea colours vary alot, maybe even with age to as i think the orange on tail gets smaller over time, could be wrong though, my female jap (bottom last pic) has a orange stripe on bottom edge of tail. also notice varying colours in my jap young from like a peach (almost pale pink) through orange to red. i used to think japs were red & or orange and the chinese yellow but i bought some young chinese newts last year and im pretty sure they were red (lost the lot so cant compare now) and i dont think ive seen a yellow jap? so hmmmm would it be safe to assume you get reds/orange and yellow from both jap and chinese newts? or red and orange japs and yellow red and orange chinese or just yellow chinese
  6. http://www.hothouseturtles.co.nz/index.htm abit of info on there about commonly kept reptiles in nz. babies/young approx red ears - 40-80 snakenecks $120 reeves - 300 bearded dragons - 500 water dragons -350-400 blue tongues 300 then setup costs would be similar i suppose, need a tank, reptile fluro & basking light, (turtles need a good canister filter) (lizards feeding/water dishs and heaps of live food) etc hth
  7. Just a couple of pics of me little morsals - 2nd to last photo sorta does them some justice young (2-4wk old approx) morphed about 3weeks bak some from last season (10months old maybe) (same as above jst this lot slightly bigger) Adult japs about 3 years at a geuss) really easy care, keep things simple for these guys ive seen many a tank overdone which results in either lost newts or you never see them and tht can make regular feedings hard.
  8. wow very cool, not something 1 sees everyday u must have the magic touch ae
  9. unreal theyre some of the nicest fish ive seen
  10. the sphagnum moss you buy at nurseries thats brown (looks dead but its not fully dried like the compressed blocks you can buy) in a bag often comes to life once out of bag and it gets moist and some sun light, actually ive seen it in the bag starting to green up and thats normally on the side facing the sun i found it grew fine in with my newts and or whisting tree frogs when i had them and that only had a fluro above it (prob a 6500k phillips), it likes it moist but not relly soggy wet i rekon. otherwise i find javamoss is all good for a ground cover as long as its kept moist underneathe it tends to grow really well and thick once out of the water almost looks like xmas moss A photo of the tank would be kool to see
  11. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/1-vt16692.html?start=0 sure would like one of these
  12. ive seen and herd of people chucking a peace of those airstone things (white shell shaped things, calcium carbonate i think) into fish bags etc but im not sure if thts a good idea or not.. nomally just air from an air pump not your breathe does the trick
  13. Yea no comparison to Caryl's sparkling pond  Have suggested they rake out excess algae and put fountain on which theyve been doing and looks to be clearing up even saw some 1-2inch comets buzzin around so thats kool, lets hope it stays that way with summer around the corner thanks for the advice
  14. lol u still got the frogs and axies together there spoon  if u keep axies well fed then fish seem to last longer, axies will eat each other if they get hungry so hmm, but if these are babie axies in the shop ttk then they prob to slow and small to eat the fish for now.
  15. axies are pretty good hunters they sit waiting patiently for tht fish to get just a lil closer then wam bam thankyou mam tastes better than sliced ham
  16. i maybe able to help, feal free to send me a pm
  17. i dont think there will be much left of his stud
  18. see the little tuft of grass in the middle of the first pic, thats there little island haha maybe they should plants some nutrient thirty plants out on that?
  19. thanks for the input everyone - appreciated It doesnt look as dense as the algae bloom on wiki, havent noticed a smell but didnt try to when i was last there tbh have suggested a bale of straw but thought id ask here first just to check they have got a fountain down there i wundered about putting that on, they only use it on special occasions haha  i think it gets blocked up from the muck in the pond but will see if i can get them to turn on for a few days and see what happens i think. water - comes from the roof on there house and runoff from the surrounding land and ive got a fealing there could be a pipe running in off the private road which i cant see it been of any good except keepin the water level up, so i wunder if tht should go to as may pose risk to fish? there is some sort of oxygen weed and an aquatic grass that just appeared prob from the ponds further down, also mums planted some lillies which are just appearing again and surounding the pond is all planted out in flax, grass, and some low growing shrubs etc and not too sheltered would get all but late afternoon sun id say, and she doesnt feed the fish so shouldnt be too much nutrient but must be i suppose
  20. nice looking bds mealworms ive read contradicting info like theyre fine for a staple for babies rite through to theyre a no no all round as hardly any goodness in them and the bds struggle to digest them. but ive found them great in the past as never had enough crickets or locusts to go around, now got crickets almost sorted im feedn less mealies. jst watch there poops if u feed heaps of mealies u will often end up with mealie soup up the walls of your tank, sum ppl say only feed the whiter mealworms or the ones that just shed there skin but each to there own.
  21. salad wise i find this good for an idea on whats good and how often etc http://www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.c ... ition.html hth
  22. 1 - pass 2 - recomended for babies 24/7in winter but can go without but temps shouldnt drop below 60 F adults - just basking light 10-12hours fluro 10-14 hours a day depending on seasons heat emitter in winter on either 24/7 with a good fluro on tank or have basking light on during day and emitter at night. 3 - basking spot 110-130 F but i find a good indicator keep an eye on the bd if its sitting on rock reaching for light/heat up temp if sitting off to side of rock prob slightly to hot infared temp guns are awesome for taking temps 4 - greens as in salad should be offerd daily - livefood twice day when young getting less with age -good staples , crickets, locusts or roaches and mealworms ok as a side thing but high in chittin and can cause the shts/hard to digest. waxworms a treat, earthworms and slaters are an ify one but id feed both. pinkies if u really want once big enough as a treat. calcium powder on insects 3-5 days a week mutvitamin once a week. 5. 4 day power cut depends, adults brumate during winter so would be asleep anyway babies need regular food and heat to digest it so ud have to be creative i suppose, had power out for a day here then 5 hours again jst recently beardies fine but eggs didnt fear to good after a day without, so after going another 5hours without power recently ive permanently borrowed my fathers generator but now thinking it over kill for a 20watt incubator haha but still will be handy aboves just a rough idea and like everything people often do things differently, sorry to go on but u asked
  23. My mother put in a pond a couple of years ago, in a wet area of there property, swamp/stream further down. Anyway been looking good utill about 2 months ago this algae started appearing, only thing thats changed consideralbly is i stocked it with goldfish last spring and they bred as was full of fish and babies but cant see that many now jst algae :-? had heaps of rain over the last 2 months and theres farm land around them (mainly sheep) so maybe run off feeding the algae? any opinions ideas would be great, cher cher  ps also wundered if its tht toxic stuff u see at the lake which aint gd 4 dogs
