  6. ignore my last post  just lookin a wiki and seems the huhu beetle is edible but im sure these have nippers as they were flying in here around last xmas, - i cut nippers off and fed to beardies lol wikipedia had this to say "They are edible, and are said by some to taste like buttery chicken (although opinions differ)" so should be swt its just the nippers that look nasty, im sure ive seen someone say they give a mean bite to. did you taste test it
  7. If its a huhu beetle like with the mean chompers i think they can bite and id be worried they may harm the frogs? but could be wrong
  8. poor axie lol i bet its never smelt so good though sounds like ur doing everything right, jst keep up with wc's and fingers x'd
  9. tryna track down some vermiculite - does anyone know if theres a shop selling this in palmerston north or close to? I could order online but rather pickup/buy local if possible  cheers
  10. wow 3000 pics to go through wot a mission i finally found one tht sorta shows one of my females from yellow parents, pic is from last summer - abit skinny :-? but the colours cool especially compared to her sis on the left- they all look the same now 6/months l8er
  11. No earth quake here (about 30 min south palmy) but ive had a couple brewskies and this seats making me numb. same here -
  12. he really is a beaut, i dont think my yellow with abit of orange even looked anything like tht but cant really remember. wunder if u x'd a red and yellow bd if youd get a mix of babies like sum red sum yellow or possibly differant shades of red to yellow
  13. nice - i like the second pic it he/shes seen something
  14. swt thanks for the replys, one of my normal/yellow dragon took on abit of an orange colouring over summer last year and just made me wunder, also seen some so called reds which didnt look all that red to me but more so a richer yellow/orange and very nice markings but these were young (6months) so maybe still to colour up . . .
  15. hmm i think you rite Dixon i was think newts are amphibians (which they are) but now im confused and think ur right maybe newts and axies are also salamanders or is it once theyve morphed theyre classified as a salamader. ??
  16. damp java/spagnum moss in an icecream container etc with a few small air holes is how id send em theyre reasonably hardy, wouldnt hurt to chuck in some fruit fly or whiteworms (kp in mind air holes may = escapes) but i doubt they fed much as will be dark inside parcel try getting overnight courier, but a couple of days shouldnt hurt, kp in mind they can go in smallish container so postage should be reasonable.
  17. there isnt any salamanders in nz as far as im aware fire bellied newts would be the closest
  18. yea theyre kool to watch develope from eggs ae did they all die quickly, a week old isnt long and if all died thats sorta extreme as with no attention id expect a few to survive, im leaning towards water prob, maybe over fed with brineshrimp as they shouldnt nd to much live food in first wk and tht polluted water . . daphnia's like gold, try get it established with eggs before they hatch and as they eat it/dissapears add more, possibly try microworms once the egg sak things gone (about a day old for memory?) but daphnias great (keepting a good supply is the tricky bit) im surprised your axie babys didnt start eating it, maybe you have to much water flow in tank for them to settle?
  19. yea power usage for that 50watt heater can vary, you mentioned its on 24/7 so its trying to heat constantly which mean your haeters to small to heat the tank above tht, but id geuss its going off bt not for long/you havent noticed it if its staying at a constant temp? if its on 24/7 the it wont matter if set to 16 or 32 it will use the same, but if its going on and off (thermostat) then will use less. David R - your onto it
  20. thats why u use the energy saver bulbs and turn lights off  but yea over exagerated maybe, thats why i said i have no idea  Romeo - thats pretty cold for an indoor setup, insulating will help and setting the heater to a lower temp will use slightly less power but maynot be worth if if the heaters only a couple of dollars a month?
  21. save power - turn heater off maybe as goldfish shouldnt need it. otheriwse cant imagine it to be much of an expence mybe 20 per month but i have no idea, hopefully sum1 else can be more informative
  22. try this guru http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/albino ... tml#357294
  23. ok its only takin me 2 months and im neally finished me project ive used white water base paint as i read somwhere thts safe but now im not so sure after having another read up this morning, so is water base paint safe once dry or will i still need to seal? -can polyurethane be applied over white water base paint maybe? as for epoxy is this the go http://www.trademe.co.nz/Building-renov ... 850335.htm epoxy looks abit pricey as i will need atleast a litre i think as the units rather big like 4 beardie tanks in 1 8)
  24. sounds like u did evrethin right to me i think key is to keep livefood available alot of the time (or feed 2-3 times a day maybe) but also keepn the tank clean, slow fresh water changes etc. especially after brineshrimp as they can foul the water pretty quick if they are left to die, hth any pics of your setup?
