  1. yeah, the AR series are quite good, I had the Ar-380 a couple of years back and I loved it. The lids aren't really a 'tight' fit, but I guess it wouldn't be hard to jimmy them to be a bit more snug... And I was thinking about getting an eel or 2, but they'd grow too big for the tank way too soon, and the other half veto'd that idea anyway *sigh*
  2. What sort of native plants could be used? I liked the Glossostigma elatinoides & Lilaeopsis novae-zelandiae as ground-cover/rock cover, but what about bigger plants? Do mangrove tolerate freshwater? Mind you, the Galaxids like slightly brackish water, don't they? So mangroves would be fine in that, but wouldn't they get too big? Does anyone know if we (as in New Zealand) have a native water-plant similar to the Amazon Ferns? Or would a NZ native-biotope be more rocks & roots than live bushy plants? eeehehe so many questions!!!
  3. Yeah, I'd read those already, it sounds awesome I was more wondering if people had actually kept native fish?
  4. Also, the other options I've been pondering are: An Oscar (although I think the tank would be too small for a full-sized one... How quickly do they grow?) A species/biotope tank, but something a little different from the norm... I love my oddball fish! **Edited** Stupid keyboard gnomes keep moving the keys around!
  5. Hah wouldn't that be nice.. On that note, does anyone know where the website for ViaAqua/AquaOne is? I've tried the obvious, and googled them, but www.aqua-one.com is a toilet website...
  6. Hey guys, I'm going to be buying myself one of them AquaOne (ViaAqua? I forget ) AR510's in about a few weeks, and I've been thinking I want to go the native route.. Would the kokopu/inanga be ok in the tank? I know it's still quite a small tank (about 75L), but it's the biggest the other half will let me buy! Also, what native plants do we have that're compatible with aquarium life? Bearing in mind that I can't really have plants living outside of the tank and draping into it, 'cause of the filter/light/casing of the tank... Suggestions please!!
  7. You're running Linux?
  8. Royal Knifefish? Never even heard of one! I only know the Clown & Black Ghost...
  9. Hey guys. I found another Hollywood Fish Farm out at Albany way! Go to www.nik.co.nz/fish/ for pics! Nik
  10. Caryl - I had the same problem with my Fluval 304 (back when I had a tank *sniff sniff*)... The little white boot on the impeller shaft thingee that sits in the magnet thingee had fallen off (sorry to be so vague, but it's been a while since I thought about it! I can't even remember how it was fixed! I think my partner at the time managed to fix it somehow... he banished me from the kitchen while he was fiddling with the filter, so I had NO idea what he did! I think it had something to do with the little boot... :-? Anyway, I'm Back!! muwaahha, I'll put a post in the welcome forum, just as soon as I get home, I'm at my boyfriends' house listening to his jazz band practice at the moment! 8)

Depending on your plants, if you bring the temp down a bit, you'll find the plants take OFF!! It happened to me, had the tank sitting at around 28ºC, and then brought it down to 24/25ºC, and the difference was amazing... Once that happened, I started with CO2, & Flourish Excel, so they just went beserk
  12. How did you make the DIY skimmer? I'm still really interested in doing this, but I gave my 2' tank to my bf's son, for his goldfish! And a PC light? So where did you get your sand from Briank? Yeah, photos would be awesome - if you like, you can email me the pics, and I can post them on my website, and provide a link for everyone here to take a nosey at
  13. Ask Chris L - he seems to have a mild obsession with discus

    :(

hahaha he hasn't taken an interest thus far... he's said that he doesn't intend on having anything to do with the tank But then, he just ripped out a good $30 worth of plants... I did have a bit of a go at him, to be honest, and no, they're not salvageable... they were put in the kitchen sink, and then dinner was prepared, and all scraps got put in a plastic bag

    :(

I got home last night - and my bf had taken to the aquarium!!! He'd decided that I had too much plant-life in my tank, and that it looked horrible, so he's ripped out a HUGE bunch of my Ambulia, Cabomba & pretty much all the floating Indian Fern I had! I don't know whether to laugh or cry! The thing is, it DOES look better now, but I could've sold that clump of plants!!!!

    Beginner Cichlids?

outgoing? I'm thinking maybe a species tank? I'd love to have good specimens of one species... that way the only incompatibility I need to worry about is lover's quarrels

    Beginner Cichlids?

hehe as much as I would love to, NOT discus, I'm a poor student again soon, so can't afford bloodworms
  19. What would be good species of cichlids to start with, as I want to get out of the planted tank thing, and now I want to get into cichlids, but not sure of where to start.... :-?
