  1. would you need a p/skimmer though????
  2. What about the houseplant that I only know of as the spider plant?? Y'all know the one... it sort of looks like a bromeliad that dried out, with a skinny center-bit, dark green out edges of leaves (spear shaped) and a creamy inner line???? I've got one growing in a pot in the bathrrom, and it has sent out a baby, so I thought I could possibly cut that off, and shove it in my tank?
  3. Hey guys - I've just been browsing www.plantedtank.net/forum and discovered NanoTanks... Is this something common here as well? I really like the sound of getting a small(ish) tank, getting some Fluorite & gravel for a substrate, planting it to buggery, and having maybe a Betta, a Corydoras, & a small 'algae-eater' (eg: less than 3" max)... For something small, like the cube-ish tanks I've seen at Jansens Glenfield (they'd be maybe 8"x8"x8") would one of the compact, energy-saver fluorescent light bulbs you buy from the supermarket be sufficient do you think? For CO2, I could possibly put a couple of 'squirts' of the gas in daily? What about filtration? I saw in the above-mentioned forum that a lot of people don't use filtration, just something to move the water around, and very regular water changes - no gravel vac'ing as you'd have very few fish in it.... Maybe a small (obviously ) UGF?? Ideas? Comments? ***EDIT*** Better yet - I could set it up as a brackish tank - have a brackish puffer & maybe some mangrove from down in the harbour? ***EDIT#2*** http://www.nano-reef.com/ omg... I want a nano-reef... there's member in there, and his nano-reef is 12"x8"6" !!!!

    Indian Fern

weird... all of my Indian Fern is floating, and most of it has fronds that rise quite high, comparatively, and they seem to be doing really well... :-?
  5. Does anyone know if Indian Fern ( www.nik.co.nz/ifern.htm ) can be grown out of the water? I have HEAPS of it growing as a floating plant, and I'm going to have to remove some, as it's stopping water flow, and cutting out light... 8) I just don't want to throw it away! Also, I think my clown loaches are starting to eat my amazonicus, I saw some horse-shoe shaped marks on one of the lower leaves this morning, when I get home from work tonight, I'll take some photos and post them up for y'all to see
  6. 1 tank only (at the moment!) 48"x18"x18" Fish: White Cloud Mountain Minnow (about 14) Peppered Catfish (1) Bronze Catfish (2) Clown Loaches (2) Bristlenosed Catfish (2) Red-Spot Pleco (1) Siamese Algae Eaters (2) Siamese Fighting Fish (1) Plants: Cabomba Ambulia Java Fern Java Moss Anubias nana Amazon Sword Vallisneria Bacopa moniera Indian Fern I know it's understocked, but I want to have more plants growing in there before I add many more fish - although having more of a school of the WCMM would be nice!

    Guppies!

perfect 'Cause at the Jansens Glenfield, there's some small tanks that I could get set up with a minimum of hassle, just a bit of driftwood & some of the Java Fern from my monster tank, add a few guppies, and I'd be away laughing

    Guppies!

Is there anyone out there that knows if I could keep guppies in a tank without a heater? 'cause if I can keep them in an unheated tank, then I might just go get some!
  9. I would say it depends on whether or not they have a large root structure or not... As far as I know, plants will accept fertilisers from both means, just some are better at getting nutrients from the roots and vice versa. Check out Pauls website - his username here is Paul or, go to: www.plantgeek.info/forum http://www.plantedtank.net Good luck
  10. harsh.... but understandable! if you want reasons (excuses, if you will): for myself, I already have a four foot aquarium in my living room, I have no financial means or even physical room to sustain another tank, even if it is only coldwater - esp as you stated earlier that they would not be comfortable above 22ºC (25ºC being "extreme") and where I currently live, that sort of temperature is going to be remarkably difficult to attain! My tank at present is set at 23º, and yet it has never gone below 25º! So, unless I can afford a chiller unit, I can't afford this. Maybe, sometime in the future, if my present tank carks it, or I find somewhere else to live with more room, I would definatly think about helping to sustain an endangered species - what bigger thrill than to help bring a species back from the brink of being lost???? All I'm saying is that it's fine for you to vent, but don't automatically assume that because you have had a low level of interest, it doesn't mean that we're not interested, it may possibly be (certainly in my case) that it's not a feasible option at present.

it works if you double-dose the tank for a week... I'm only up to day 3 so I couldn't really give you a definite answer yet... I'll get back to y'all on Saturday

    DIY Hood?

I've put my old mosquito net over the top of my tank  seems to be doing the trick - no loss of light etc, and the fish can't jump out!!
  13. oops my bad.. must just be the North Shore club then...

    DIY Hood?

OK, I seruiously NEED a quick hood for my tank - the SAE's keep jumping, one of them hit the light before! Made such a thump! kinda funny, but worrying at the same time, as I just know I'm going to wake up one day with one less SAE! :?
  15. There seems to be a serious lack of info on the breeding of these fish! I know that breeding has not been recorded in captivity, but does anyone know how they breed? E.g. are they egglayers, livebearers or what???
  16. So who here is a member of the Glenfield club? I've called Sue, and it looks like I'll be making the bf drag me out to the next meeting lol

    Black Hair Algae

Right, well I just went to Jansens Glenfield, and was served by a very helpful young guy (even though I probably look younger, I'm NOT!!!). I've now got 250mL of Seachem's Flourish Excel, and 2 Siamese Algae Eaters / Blackline Flying Foxes. here's hoping I kill the black hair algae!! Also, he told me that in a month or so, they're going to be getting a liquid black-hair algae killer!! So keep an eye out for it! Fins crossed!!!!

    Black Hair Algae

the-whaa? There is black hair algae in there as well though, I just can't get any good shots of it - it's quite thin, looks like hair, and it's black????

    Black Hair Algae

it should be pretty easy to tell the difference between a SAE & a Chinese one: http://www.bettastarz.com/sae.htm I've printed this out - I'll take it with me

    DIY Hood?

I want to make a hood for my tank, so that it's covered, and I lose less water through evaporation, and also incorporate the lights I already have... I have a compact light (2 bulbs) which I don't really want to dismantle, and an old 36W bulb & fitting, that I'm quite fine with dismantling, as it's cumbersome. Any ideas? I'm really getting into this DIY stuff!!!

    Black Hair Algae

Well, I just spoke to a guy @ Hollywoods - he's suggested Flourish Excel (at double doses to kill the algae) & a Blackline Flying Fox???? I thought Siamese Algae Eaters were the fish to get? Are they both Crossocheilus siamensis???? I'm confused... :?

    Black Hair Algae

I've recently added CO2 to the tank Dave, but it's DIY, so no real control over it, but it hasn't made any difference to the plants & algae... Time to bring out the scissors when I get home tonight!!!!

    Black Hair Algae

I must admit, I *am* a bit slack when it comes to the water changes etc, it's just that when I try to gravel-vac, by the time I've done half the amount of gravel I need to do, I've already emptied two buckets out! I read somewhere something about blacking the tank out as well - has anyone had any success with this, and would I continue with standard maintenance during the black-out period? This algae has picked the wrong person to mess with - I'm JUST as stubborn hehe

Go to this link: http://www.nik.co.nz/image/ambulia4.JPG This shows (but not very well) the algae I've managed to propogate...
