  1. Alan, have you been at the Guiness again? But seriously, this is what white spot looks like: image courtesy of images.google.com
  2. Do not - repeat: NOT - get duckweed, unless you want the light to only go as far as the water level! I had ONE piece (smaller than a 5c coin) in my tank, it came with a piece of driftwood I'd bought, and 3 weeks later, I was scooping HANDFULS out of the tank!! And, of course, every time I remove it all, I find about a week later that I obviously didn't as there's more in there still...
  3. I need answers! I'm getting the monster tank this weekend, and before I go ahead and buy stuff for it, I want to get a good substrate! I've found CaribSea Eco-Complete at Plantgeeks, but I've not been able to find it in NZ! I called Hollywoods, and they've suggested I buy JBL AquaBasis Plus, which is quite sandy, and should be done as a bottom layer, then covered with standard gravel. Jansens suggested I buy laterite, and again, cover that with standard gravel. I've emailed MAF asking if Eco-Complete is allowed to be imported, but haven't heard back from them yet... And I haven't heard back from www.aquariumplants.com as to how much it would cost to ship Eco-Complete to NZ...
  4. Sounds like you've got things under control! From what I've read about discus, they're a lot of maintenance, and when it comes to 50% water changes daily, I'm just not up to do that... (Especially when it's about 200L of water changing every day!) If you're going to be planting heavily, I'd suggest getting a good substrate to help encourage good growth, and also look at getting reasonably high levels of lighting (dependant on what plants you're looking at..). CO2 wouldn't go amiss either... Try reading through our Aquatic Plants forum here, and also try http://www.plantgeek.net/forum
  5. The strands do look like Java Moss... Unless you've got a clearer pic of it, I'll agree with the rest!
  6. This is GREAT I used to have a few bunches of this floating around my last 4' tank, and the root structure was great!! Good thing I didn't have guppies, or I'd have been over run within months!!!

    Oddball Fish

What oddballs have people got? I've just been browsing http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com, and there's some cool looking fish there! Loving the look of Gar!

    Bumblebee Gobys

I was told they're poisonous... So not generally a good idea to have them with any other fish that 'might' try to eat them!
  9. Hey guys, yet another image intensive post! I've found these in my white worm culture.. Anybody seen these in there before? Now I know white worms don't have a pupal stage.... Just for scale, the big chunky silver thing is the business end of a teaspoon... And the blue lines are a teatowel, 33mm apart. Enjoy!
  10. You should take photos of the damage Good_Riddance!!
  11. OK.... I'm guessing that nobody replying means that nobody has heard of it.... :-?
  12. LOL!\ (maybe I should've said PMSL?)
  13. If it's a tiny tank, you could think about putting bumblee gobies in there? They're only tiny little fish, and they do best in a species tank, as I've been told they're poisonous for other fish to eat! Google them, they're very cute!!!

  15. What would you guys consider a healthy amount of lighting? For my new tank (going on the assumption it's 430-something litres), and if I go on the 0.5w per litre line of thought, I'm going to need over 200W!! :o:o Now, 216 / 1000 * 0.1391 (cost per kWh) = $0.03 per hour... At 10 hours per day, that's $0.30 per day, Multiplied by 30 days, it's an extra $9 per month on the lighting alone... Include the heaters (which admittedly aren't running very often at present), and the filter ...
  16. I've only had a Fluval, and that was good, other than the primer... But I've been told at least a million times that Eheim are the best!

    NOT DIY CO2!

http://www.aquatics-online.co.uk/listse ... 79&seq=191 Is it one of these?

    NOT DIY CO2!

I'm ideally looking for a complete system that I don't have to do much with... EG, just put everything where it needs to be, and turn it on, and replace the gas when it runs out... I want automation!
  19. You wish your hubby was a fish?
  20. I got meself a male guppy from the Bird Barn today... He's so pretty! Although the females don't quite know what to think of him yet...
  21. What would you guys consider as a good substrate for a 420-odd litre planted tank? My plan so far is to have a heavily planted tank, so I want a good substrate medium for the plants... Also, is under-gravel heating necessary in Auckland? Do you think it would make much of a difference? Nik
  22. Aqua

    NOT DIY CO2!

Hey guys, What do I need to look at in order to arrange a 'proper' CO2 system for a 420-odd litre tank? And cost?? I haven't got the tank yet, but it should be here in a couple of weeks! I'm planning on having it heavily planted, so a good CO2 system would be helpful.... Cheers! Nik
  23. OK, so. With a tank this size, and aiming to have it heavily planted, what do you guys think would be suitable fish? I'm thinking a swarm of glowlights (I really quite like them now!), some ancistrus (so they don't rip up plants like a pleco), khuliis & corys. Any other suggestions? (See my other question in the technical forum too!)
