+1 for the siamese algae eater. I always keep at least one. found they are the key to having no bba. just got to make sure you get a true sae. is there any way you can fill a large bin/barrel/buckets from somewhere with town supply water to use for water changes for a month or 2? or as suggested try rainwater? sorry if this has been posted before just skimmed this thread good luck and keep trying.

$250?? sounds a bit steep? i would usually charge $100-120 for a repair like that. the repair will never be perfect, but a good layer will get it looking pretty good, and the more it gets walked on/ exposed to sunlight, the better it will look

i agree about not selling your stuff, you wont get nearly what its worth to you. however i think you need to think a differently about moving. surely you know someone with a van or a towbar, trailers are cheap as to hire for a day. should cost you no more than $100 including some beers and gas for the friends that help you. small house should cost you no more than $100 to get carpets cleaned (offer to pay cash) bond from house that you move out of should more than cover a cheaper place, unless you have damaged the one you are in? cleaning- do it yourself, your partners not working so plenty of time for cleaning. the money you save in the first couple of weeks paying cheaper rent should cover moving costs, and travelling costs surely wont be more than the money you are saving in rent. please dont take this the wrong way lmsmith, hope things get better for you soon.

I dont think all substrates will be suitable for ugf, especially the aquatic mix, or the like, as it packs down quite hard, so there is not going to be much flow at all. i think i will take my chances of death by filter......

i use one wok, and have done for years. not sure if it does any good, if anything it stops me blasting the cold water in too fast, as it restricts the pressure quite a bit. it does say that it removes all chlorine etc.

yes i agree i have had one in that temp for a couple of years now and its doing well.

yes i had this last week bought a new tv on special, and offered to pay cash if i could have extra discount. they said no thats as low as they could go. so on hp for 2 years interest free. cost $35 establishment fee and that was it. will put the cash in a savings account and get interest on it then pay it off just before interest kicks in.

there are people out there far worse off than the majority of new zealanders. sure it sucks for people to be laid off but it happens. there is plenty of other jobs out there for people, maybe not the kind of jobs they would like, but hey, any job is better than no job. we have just had the best christmas for years, has taken best part of five years to become debt free (mortgage aside). in that time however i have started my own business from scratch, bought a house, two vehicles, and managed to keep sane whilst raising three kids. mincie has the right attitude here, stay positive and get on with life. a friend of mine moved back to nz from aussie a couple of years ago, with a nice deposit for a house. in his mind the houses were far too expensive at that time. also in his trade there was little to no work available. instead of getting work elsewhere, and saving his deposit for the right house in the future, he refused to do any work that wasnt his line of work, and basically existed, using nearly all the money he had saved for his deposit paying rent and bills while he sat on his butt waiting for some work to come up. 4 months ago he spent the last of his savings to relocate beck to aussie to start again. :roll: if we all had that kind of attitude no one would get anywhere.

running the tank with no fish for a month will not achieve a "cycled" tank. there needs to be some source of waste product in order for the bacteria to feed on and multiply. either by adding fish slowly, or adding ammonia. i prefer to use fish, as putting in random amounts of ammonia seems a bit hit and miss. seeing you are only putting two fish in, i would put them in straight away.
