  1. Ask your lfs but I believe they have to order a min of 8 (females only). So you're looking at anything from $80-$100 for your 8... If you want to try breeding them you may want to PM Devon and see if he has any males for sale from his outcross (Albino mother/normal father) as he's in Auckland too.
  2. I got 8 in and about 1/2 seemed to be infertile.... only have 3 of those left (and have got 2 others since) All 3 have droped one lot of fry but only small drops. 18 in total, only 4 of which were male. They seem to abort or get baby-bound and die quite frequently too.
  3. There are a few good pet shops arround... Deco City Pets won't even have plecos except under special order. But then 90% of their buisness seems to be 'word of mouth' so they realise what their rep is worth. - They're building a darn good one IMHO. Seems like the smaller shops care more about their customers sometimes. Bigger ones may have more range but the smaller ones seem to give better advice and are almost always happy to source things for you. - At least that's been my personal experiance.
  4. Just found this thread... if Petition is still going please PM me as I would like to add my details. Also how's the artical going.... might be worth sending a copy to Campbell Live via the TV3 website. Good on ya mate - a very impressive cause.
  5. I've never kept Mollies but when I first joined my local club one of the ladies was selling all of her Mollies as she believed they were attaching her guppies tails. A long flowing tail would be a good target for any fish that was going to fin-nip.
  6. Is this safe? How easy is it to over do it and what would happen if you did??
  7. I've got BN wrigglers too!!! *Does happy li'l dance*
  8. Go to one of your lovely Auckland rocky beaches.... Pick out a few large stones you like (5 is a good number).... Go home and boil rocks.... Boil the driftwood with them just in case.... Use rocks to weigh down drift wood. Easy.
  9. You have platties and swordtails in the same tank??? These two fish a very closely related and will cross-breed creating hybrids. I would heavily advise that they should not be kept together… if you do chose to keep them together I’d advise against keeping or selling of babies. Just my 5 cents, KA
  10. Okay [thinks back to 3rd form science class] the way I understand it is this: Gasses are extended between air and water wherever they come into contact with each other. Therefore, the more water moves the more gas that can be exchanged. (This is because more water is spending time on the surface.) While an air stone causes water to come into contact with air the exchanged gasses still have to go somewhere. [This is why bubbles go up.] The bubbles going up causes water movement. – This means that more water spends its turn on the surface in a shorter period of time, which allows more gas exchange. While a minute amount of gas exchange happens with the small bubbles from the air stone the majority of the benefit comes from water movement. That said, my UG outlets are above the water surface causing a waterfall effect. This is simply because I like the sound of waterfalls better than the bubbling of hot pools and when you have a *few* tanks running you need to consider sound as well. Hope this helps. KA.
  11. Wow that is sooooooooooooo cool!!! I want some!!!!!!!!!!!!
  12. Hi PeneJane, this site seems very helpful: http://websvirginia.com/angels/index.html Good luck.
  13. They must have been well packed... hope you thanked the sender.
  14. I've found entire baby plants growing off of loose leaves that have been chucked in a bucket to throw away with a little water and then forgotten about. If leaves are still green give them a chance. At least thats MHO.
  15. Um actually Kookie that's exactly it... we're not allowed to give out ppls PRIVATE info for anybody with an internet connection to see. But PUBLIC businesses are fine.
  16. LOL Tammy... don't you mean "holes"??
  17. Not "Sea salt"... "Tonic salt". Somebody who paid attention in chemistry (I was too busy trying to stir up the teacher as he was a jerk  ) will be able to explain to you the difference. I do know that they are different. I always put a little in with my livebearers although I only use about a ½ dose as a lot of them are with clown loaches and bristlenoses. I like to keep all of my tanks relatively similar as I tend to get “Bright ideas†[which often involve putting a breeding net in here and moving that fish from this tank to the tank over there] at the most inappropriate of times. Eg: 3 minutes before I have to go to work.
  18. I can no longer keep Male guppies with my Angelfish - they just don't grow big enough and the Angels seem attracted to their tails. Decent sized females seem fine and as the Angelfish eat the babies I've found that leaving a 'pre-hit' female I want to breed with in there for 3 months is a good way to control what I mate them with. [Fish will of course need conditioning after this b4 breeding.]

    Tetra

Did they taste good? (Ya know I'm just trying to make you smile:))
  20. I think if a decent earthquake hits I'll be in trouble no matter what.... Our shared Laundry is a *shack* on the roof above that room and would most likely fall right through. I have braced stands to each other at right angles but am unable to brace to wall as I live in a building that is controlled by a Historical Trust. My landlord is VERY concerned and we've had a number of "Sit downs" about my tanks etc. He will not allow any type of water flow from one tank to another so sumps are out of the question. As each tank must be run as an independent unit (I have no choice here) I'm sticking to the most basic forms of filtration: - Sponge filters for breeding tanks. - A combination of Under-gravel and box filters for the others. (I have managed to beg and otherwise acquire a small number of each- thus the combination.) The good thing about all 3 of these types of filtration is that they are all air-driven which means I wont have to find more space to plug filters in.
  21. Wow Lots of people seem to be reading this thread... over 100 views since my last post. Okay, to please the masses here's an update: - All but 1 stand are now in place (8 shelf panels have yet to be painted) - Half of irrigation tubing for air pump is in place.... need to go down to Mitre 10 and get some more connectors now that I have worked out how I'm doing it. - Went shop-to-shop yesterday (Tuesdays and Wednesdays are my usual weekend not Saturdays and Sundays) on a begging mission for free poly and hit the jackpot. ----> If you're in/near Napier and need some PM me and I'll tell you which shop. They're just happy to get rid of it. - 1/2 of tanks are now in place. - Boyfriend finally seems interested. (OMG!) He actually asked me a relevant and constructive question today - guess he pays more attention than I think.
  22. Most pet shops will test your water for a small fee.
  23. Witha tank that small it's also easy to over feed... Check that your receptionist isn't sneaking then extras. I discovered that my flatmates was doing this "Because they looked hungry" lost a few fish before I discovered the issue.
