Yeah it could have been worse, mind you if I had to choose between loosing a few of the things I can't replace or pretty much every breeder I have ever had it would be a hard choice.. Sterilise will be pour half a container of bleach through the tanks filled them up and cycle them for a few days then clean it all out start again..

There is nothing in there that I haven't bred and sold tons of in the past all relatively common fish, pretty much all my mbuna/haps/zebras.. ,haven't lost anything that I don't believe I can replace it might just take a while..

Yeah I am usually very very careful, usually to the point where I don't buy anything from stores, the worst part is the fish is still alive so I wouldn't have been able to spot it

Yeah it really sucks, I had had most of these fish for 4+ years so they were big and I had raised them from 1-2cm fry was by far my favourite tank so really hurt to loose them all.. It was a particularly nasty thing that hit they, I have been keeping fish for many years now and never seen anything like it. Have had a few mates over to see if they knew either none of them could think of anything, it is pretty horrible to just have them all wiped out

    Bugger!

Had a disaster recently.. I saw a fish I wanted at a petshop and grabbed it then ended up being really busy and in a hurry just chucked it into an established tank with other breeders (fish was big and looked healthy enough). I am sure everyone can figure out what happened next. I noticed that the fish had a small sore on its side (assumed it was just from smashing into a rock or something like that so thought nothing of it). Then noticed the fish in the tank had white spot got annoyed I didn't quarantine so treated for that, next day all the fishes scales are peeling off slime everywhere and they are dying! I freaked out got in touch with Jen and starting trying to treat for what we might be able to guess it was, it wiped that 5fter out of fish and I had tried my best to ensure no movement of water etc had happened. A few days later I noticed a sick fish in my big 540L display tank with 90% of my breeders (close to 100 fish) that I wasn't breed from in it, 2 days later (with tons of attempts to treat) they are all dead Pretty gutted about the whole thing really, and the worst part is it is my fault. However the fish that caused the whole thing is still alive, so it must either be a carrier and not show any symptoms, so I am not even sure that quarantine would have helped because I would have declared it clean by now and introduced it.. So I guess it is just one of those things that happens. At least it hasn't spread to any other tanks so I can sterilise everything and start again I am pretty gutted and it was almost enough to get me to throw it in for the last week I have been considering it If anyone has brought any of my fish over the years and has any pure babies from them let me know I am looking to get a few of the many strains I have lost.
  7. Poo does not necessarily mean there is any dangerous stuff going toxic on the lower layers, I would maybe try and add another airstone or something at a different area to the filter and see if increased water movement helps? Without symptoms it is very difficult..
  8. How are the oxygen levels in the tank? They are from fast flowing oxygen rich waters (hence their shape and swimming behaviour. Also could be waste sitting on the bottom where they spend most of their time so it affects them more? Are you noticing any symptoms in the fish before they die?
  9. Sounds very familar You can also add veges (apples/bananas/pears) or other veges (potatoes carrots etc). And some people add multivitamins to their mixes.
  10. I chucked a chunk of it in the fire once to see what it would do and it certainly didn't catch fire, yeah would probably have given off some nasty fumes but would have been better than just turning into a raging inferno and destroying the garage in my books..
  11. For a smaller tank there is no reason why you couldn't use a bubble or sponge filter on it, people have been doing it for years and it is all most breeders do..
  12. It is amazing how quickly they grow and mature, they were only small when Simon got them off me and it hasn't been that long.. Anyway good luck with the next lot there must be something pretty bad going on with your water though so keep a good eye on it.
  13. This link is pretty good.. http://www.discusnews.com/article/cat-02/salt.shtml Might be something else of use here.. http://www.discusnews.com/article/catag ... l#diseases
  14. Yeah poly is great stuff to burn, I managed to score fireproof stuff when I did my poly lined rooms which made me sleep a bit easier, electricity+water+highly flammable stuff doesn't sound like a good recipe I got some cheap stuff from bondor in Auckland for under tanks.. And yeah Josh need some pics man.
  15. That sucks I do find it very bizare you have these issues, I have found shellies to be very tough (even fry) and I do 20-30% water changes straight from the tap on them from day dot.. Same with the dems/yellows you had issues with, I also know a few other keepers in Palmy who do the same without issues. There must be something very weird with your water if this keeps happening.. Same issue happened to the ones that I gave to Bilbo before I left he managed to shock and kill them all somehow.. I do agree with Josh though for the sake of a small tank just keep a 20L bucket bubbling away with some limestone in it and let the water condition a bit if you think that is an issue.
  16. lol yeah shellies are nasty buggers thats for sure My giraffes have big mouths too..
  17. I agree pics or it didn't happen
  18. Awesome good work, hopefully there are more from this batch You must be doing something right..
  19. Hi and welcome, pretty slim pickings for fish shops and stuff around there unfortunately (I moved from Bulls to Auckland recently) however Simon is in town (no doubt he will get in touch with you at some stage) he is right into his plants and stuff so should be able to sort you out in that regard
  20. Wow they look blue, or is that the lighting? Someone else mentioned that had happened with their spawn but they all turned gold in the end it will be interesting to see what happens with them as they grow.. What sexes do you have, how big are they and are they getting along? It can be difficult to get them out of shelles, generally turning the shell upside down and elevating it works as they come out of the shell eventually and don't want to swim back up into it to get back in it!
  21. Yeah they are awesome fish, I am pretty gutted to have had them and lost them.. With the numbers of fry they were producing it is amazing they are now lost.. Here is the female with fry And the male Hopefully someone else imports them soon..
  22. Tank looks good How many shellies did you end up getting?
  23. I always thought that Ribbon fins was the anal/dorsal extensions like in the pic and the swallow tail was the extended tail fin..
