    Help....

lol wish my luck with breeding them then! I have 8 adults that I have borrowed off a friend, just need to source some more big haps to use as host fish I don't think that rainbow sharks are algae eaters as such? And also would be wary of sticking more than 1 in the same tank (think they are supposed to get quite aggressive towards each other), how well do they handle a high PH?

    Help....

For starters your tank is nowhere near heavily stocked I had over 80 fish in a 540L tank including adults giraffes dolphins etc before my tank crash. The fronts when they grow will take up some space in the future so it may look full then. I would change 20-25% a week or even twice a week if you can be bothered, you will probably find that you only need to do them every 2 weeks (really easy to measure nitrate levels and find out how fast waste is building up) but more is always better. I would have been doing them from day 1, or are you trying to say that you had been topping the water up instead of changing the water? Cories are a no-go have seen them in cichlid tanks before most of them had half of their fins missing and eyes missing etc, I have had luck with bristlenoses and they seem to do well in african tanks they do get a bit of a hard time (but so does everyone else) but mine still breed etc in there so they were obviously happy. What are you looking to "clean" is there algae everywhere or uneaten food? You could add some synos to help clean uneaten food and for something different..
  4. There was a spate of them a while ago and heaps of threads on here but seems to have settled now?
  5. Could have been anything, but possibly egg bound or some sort of other internal problem causing a blockage..
  6. That is a good price depending on condition etc.. Only issue I would see with making it into a planted tank would be the depth? But I have seen them planted out with hardy plants before..
  7. Looks like the right stuff to me too
  8. I thought the same but kept dems with my adult giraffes with no losses, Eddie also keeps small fish - pulchers jullies and the like with his fronts and none have been eaten. It does sound a bit hit and miss with adult fronts, either way you do have 3-4 years to think about it so plenty of time
  9. Nothing wrong with the bus or train, cheap and just sleep, airfares at this notice would be very expensive, Palmy is an expensive place to fly out of..
  10. There are already tons of imported no name brands on trademe would probably be a difficult market to break into. And yeah you would have to make sure the plugs were all right And also be aware that people will be after you for refunds if you import rubbish and it blows up or cooks their fish..
  11. Wont use more power will just heat water faster, thermostat may not be accurate enough to keep temp even in a small volume of water (ie not responsive enough for the fast changes that a 300@ heater will have in a small tank) but 300W is about best. I would import 300Ws if I was you
  12. I found the same happened when my johannii got overthrown by my giraffes as they matured, it was almost like my male johannii disappeared overnight and I gained another random looking fish around the same size lol.
  13. Electric yellows, dems and peacocks A nice cichlid community!
  14. Can't remember how they go together but you might be able to make a hole between the pump and where it goes into the hood that would divert some of the flow back into the tank before it gets to the filter. is there anyway you can attach a DIY spray bar to the water outlet back into the tank and direct the flow towards the side of the tank to disperse it better?
  15. That's pretty good bang for buck My only concern would be that it is a new filter so not as tried and true as the other designs but they are still variations on a theme so should be all good, aqua one isn't a bad brand either.

    Clown Loach =(

Did you only buy the 1? Clown loaches are great at just lying there and doing nothing.. They are particularly good at doing it when they are by themselves they should really be in groups, I have never seen their true behaviour until I kept a group of 10 of them and they are always out and about eating off the surface etc
  17. Maybe through a purple haze? lol
  18. Be careful where you stuff extra filter wool you would hate to block up the return of the water back into the tank and end up with a flood.. Drilling more holes would probably be a better idea.
  19. Just have to work out your units from there, most people start with all their units cm and divide by 1000 to get L (1000cm3 is 1L).
  20. This happens with tangs sometimes it is hard to say what happened maybe the one tha got a hiding was trying to eat thier fry and the other took exception? I had issues with my jullies when the babies got to 2-3cm because the male started to chase them off and the female tried to kill him..
  21. Not hard to wire up fluoros and test them Just make sure you find someone who knows what they are doing! Might also be the kind of thing you could show up to a sparky shop at 4pm on a friday afternoon with a box of beers and all the cable and plugs and get done..
  22. 2ft tanks for africans? What are you planning to put in them? Anyway about the best way to light 2.7m cheapily would be to source a couple of 4ft fluoros.. either that or you could DIY some normal light fittings and use 6500k energy savers above each tank..
  23. Are you stocking the tank fully to begin with? With a 450L tank I would just steal some media from an established tank and start off stocking slowly, with the established media and the volume of water I doubt you would even get any detectable ammonia, plus most malawis are tough as old boots so takes alot to affect them.
  24. Yeah I couldn't get my silica sand clean either even with quite a bit of flow.. Maybe you could try a wave maker or a power head to increase flow? FX5 should be pretty good for that sized tank unless you have it very heavily stocked..
  25. Yeah mine are breeding quite well, only have 1 girl she has had 3-4 spawns already, the same age as yours too Matto.. Do you still have them in that tank chocca block filled with fish? They might not breed unless they have some space to themselves..
