  1. You can get heat pads to put under tanks with a thermostat in the tank.. Some people have even made their own.
  2. A good mate has asked if I know anyone who can pick up an airpump from him in New Plymouth and send it upto Auckland? The seller wont ship it and he really wants it.. It is just an airpump not fish so should be easy to package/ship.. He will obviously compensate for any costs etc..
  3. I think most people just smear liquid nails around the top and then stick the wood on and then poly and tank and then it should compress it all evenly and sit nice and flat..
  4. Jewels are a different sort of aggressive than the mbuna and stuff like that, jewels tend to stake out a section of the tank and guard it.. I have never kept them together but I have seen them in the same tank with no issues in the past.
  5. I did have algae issues with mine when I first setup a tank with it but it seemed to disappear, as with all algae watch your light levels and what you feed etc, also some fish that dig around in it more will tend to turn it over more so. Brown algaes are also very common in new tanks so it might clear up.. In saying that when I tried silica sand that went manky and brown and I couldn't find anyway to get rid of it
  6. Don't believe what the manufacturer recommends as a tank size for a filter, just go on flow and aim for min 3-4 times per hour for a nice clean tank more is best and you can certainly get away with less.. FX5s are rated for upto 1500L but if you only ran one on a tank that size with big fish it would be pretty manky. What is a UF2400? Is it a CF2400 with a UV filter?
  7. +1 I have chucked carrots in the tank before and even the bristlenoses don't like it..

  9. lol I am sure if they could figure out how to do that they would
  10. Probably very untrue in NZ we generally get the cheapest mass produced fish out of asia..
  11. They are pink to start off with even when infertile, they will gradually darken until around day 3 when they will hatch. If they are infertile the female will eat them as they go off, unless you were monitoring them constantly then you would have missed them going off and her eating them and then you have no idea if they are fertile or not
  12. Then you don't know if they were fertile..
  13. Can usually get them second hand for around $3-400 have seen one go for that price on here recently and also one went $1res on trademe too.. Just keep an eye out.
  14. I found I needed something to bind it all together even when using shrimp.. I haven't tried agar but does sound like it would be good, vege based is always good.

    Bugger!

Yeah was thinking of a big dwarf tank for one of them wouldn't mind doing some plants and stuff, maybe cockatoos, kribs, agassizi, dwarf flags and some schooling fish.. Only time will tell, gotta get this one cleaned out and some fish it in first it is depressing!
  16. The female will eat any infertile ones as they go off, chances are they were infertile and got eaten as they went bad and you didn't notice them, did you notice any darken or hatch and wriggle? That is the only sure fire way of saying they are fertile.. Just give them time apistos especially can be slow starters
  17. I would definitely add more fish, go for at least 10 fronts more is always better.. You have the tank space to do bigger colonies of your existing fish too. The fronts are supposed to be great nocturnal hunters, I have seen photos on overseas websites of half adult male electric yellows that have been bitten in half my adult frontosa.. However my mate has probably the biggest/oldest fronts in NZ (the original breeding colony probably 10-15yrs+ old) and he has them in with all sorts including 4-5cm peacocks and none of them get eaten. I am unsure if it is just his fish that don't munch everything up, or he is feeding them well enough that they don't but they certainly don't seem as predatory as they are supposed to be. FX5 or 2 would be awesome for filtration or a sump, sump is usually better but can be harder to setup and harder to make quiet. You could also try 2 aqua one CF2400s which you could probably source for the same price as 1 FX5 that would give you some redundancy and slightly more combined turn over than the FX5.

    Bugger!

Went back into the store told them what happened, they were not even willing to help me out with buying some meds to try not impressed really.. I know they must get it all the time but they know how many tanks I have and that I know what I am doing with my fish... Getting out there today to clean the tank out and start sorting things so I can move some other fish into it so it doesn't look so bare, will have 4 5x2x2ft tanks empty after wiping those 2 out
  19. Are the eggs fertile Joe? Your fish were on the smaller side when you got them and it is not uncommon for males to take a few goes to become fertile and mums to take a few goes to get it right as well. Just give them a bit of time to get it right
  20. That is a great breeding net Good luck with the fish! Maybe you need to strip them next time?

    Bugger!

Unsure what it was I think it may have been Tetrahymena corlissi which is more common in guppies. I did manage to treat 6 fish from the initially affect tank with tonic, but this didn't work in the second tank that was affected I also tried albendazole as suggested in this article viewtopic.php?f=4&t=47774&hilit=guppy+disease from research I have done you are very lucky to get a 50% success rate with treating it I had no luck this time. Of course I have no actual confirmation of what actually caused it.. Yeah all new fish should be treated with caution, but also goes to show that sometimes these things just happen, as I said the fish that caused it all is still alive and at the stage where I would have introduced her to a tank with other fish anyway so it would have happened then. Maybe it was a combination of factors that caused it to surface and affect the other fish it is hard to tell. And yeah just gives me more tanks and motivation to put into my other species, and look forward to future imports to get new stock.. Pretty gutted about my dolphins/giraffes though
