  1. Have to agree, what a crazy busy tank!
  2. Should be ok just keep an eye on things and move her if she causes issues.. I would be more worries about your smaller fish with the livingstonii..
  3. Sometimes people down South take a little while to catch up on technology :digH:
  4. They will cross they are the same fish.. Just one has been line bred (from a random fish that came out gold) to produce gold ones, same with the albinos. It is probably not a good idea to breed them together because it will create confusion down the line (ie someone buys a brown one breeds it and gets half golds out), also it is hard to guarantee exactly what species of ancistrus you have so best to keep what you have..
  5. A difficult one to breed for a first timer.. The fry will look like a 1mm blob with a piece of hair sticking out of it, very hard to spot even when they are right in front of you and you know what you are looking for.. Sometimes you can have more luck using a torch and shining it from above or just watching really closely..
  6. I have used salt with clown loaches/bristlenoses before.. Usual story, siphon out a bucket of water before treating, add salt slowly and observe, if any of the fish flip out then rip them straight out into your bucket of clean water..
  7. It should be pointed out that without getting it diagnosed properly (samples taken and cultured/examined by someone who knows what they are doing) anything we suggest is only a rough guess it could really be anything. But that article for columnaris is here http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/columnaris_disease.php
  8. +1 more columnaris than velvet and definitely not white spot from the description given (white film etc). There is a good Cichlid forum article on attempting to treat it..
  9. Try get a pair of jullie dickfeildi from hollywoods
  10. As with all of the above ask him where in waitakere he is it's a huge area..
  11. Seller says they live in "Auckland city" of course we all know what this means (it could still be anywhere in Auckland) but might be relatively central..
  12. I do remember an article that someone (I think it was firenz) posted a few years back that he found on planet catfish and it said that most synos are hybrids, and a bent dorsal fin can be a good indication of it.. Might be a good thing to search for and have a read up on? I know I have seen plenty of randoms in NZ that don't really seem to match any real type.. It does look like the cuckoos are good though so that is a good thing
  13. +1 this is always the best way.. You must have some pretty big goldfish and be bombing the tank with food to get that much ammonia in a 1200L tank especially when it has a sump etc setup.. Are your test kits new?
  14. That's awesome, I can kinda see where he is coming from as well
  15. Yep I agree, he apisto'd it just happens, no real explanation or cure that I have found..
  16. "This fund is to benefit FNZAS affiliated members who have been affected by the Christchurch earthquakes. Applications for financial assistance can be submitted in writing to the FNZAS secretary. Each application will be considered by the FNZAS executives and funds will be fairly distributed on a case by case basis." From the link that Zev has posted.. http://www.fnzas.org.nz/?p=1304
  17. Sounds like you definitely need to join our club and help arrange a show, I have just taken over as president and we are definitely looking for ideas to promote the club, the hobby and raise a few $$s at the same time..
  18. Glad you found some bigger ones Always best to match size where possible, although I found the addition of a bigger male helps keep the peace too - nobody bothers to scrap because they know he is the boss.. Pretty hard work to join the club man, need to be recommended by 6 existing members and pass initiation.. lol Just kidding Come along to the next meeting it is the second Tuesday of next month, think it is at someones house but I haven't had that confirmed, it will be posted in the clubs section on here when it is finalised but the date is set in stone.. If you like the club then you can pay to join and get a club membership and FNZAS membership/discount card..
  19. If you want to find out more about clubs and shows and stuff then join your local fish club.. As for shows the FNZAS is looking to run one in a year or so in Hamilton apart from that I am not aware of anyone else who does them in NZ..
  20. Only small ones or big males at this stage.. Yellows are hard to tell I used to breed them by the thousand but for some reason they haven't spawned in over 7 months.. I thought the same thing about the bigger aggressive fish but mine are in a tank on their own too so who knows, just one of those things sometimes fish just take a break
  21. Sweet The reds are growing well now in a 5fter with some other fish.. I have more dems for sale here if you want some just let me know. Re your yellows I am not the best person to ask - because I can't seem to get my colony breeding despite tons of people waiting for fry because they are nice clean ones and hard to find now.. But yeah I would try and fiddle around with your ratio maybe and see, how are you sexing them if the aren't breeding? Are you venting them? Yellows are very hard to sex by appearance, sure the black on fins and size/dominance etc can be a good guide but I have seen fish I would swear were males (big fish, bold black on all fins even egg spot on anal fin) holding..
  22. Awesome pics David, thanks for sharing.. Have to agree the aquarium looks great all the rare and wild caught stuff in amazing tanks to be enjoyed, seems we miss out big time here. Amazing seeing all the aros cruising around in the ponds at the zoo and the midas in big ponds, it is just a whole other world for fish keeping over there, looks like you had a good time though!

I would investigate (or if I doubt call customs) any charges that you might have to pay for importing them.. Sure you might get away with it, but worst case you might get hit with tons of fees that you didn't budget on and end up with a filter stuck at a customs office while you save to pay them.. More stuff here but I have no real idea how to drive it http://www.customs.govt.nz/features/charges/fees/Pages/default.aspx
  24. http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=Synodontis+eupterus+breeding&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari Google is ur friend there are tons of threads about it most suggesting hormones etc.. They are not like cuckoos and oscars are not mouth brooding hosts either. Good luck, I would love to see it done in nz but it doesn't look too likely
