  1. Head shape is not very accurate.. The only accurate way I have found to sex them is looking at the length of the dorsal/anal fins males will be longer than females and go back to the tail fin, females will be squared off and stop well before the tail.. They have to be a reasonable size to sex though.
  2. No worries if just want some nice display fish and don't care about what they are
  3. Yeah I wouldn't pay that sort of money for any inidentified zebra, it is not worth my time in setting up a dedicated tank to breed fish that most likely aren't pure, I would rather do for fish that are more likely pure. But that is just me, plenty of people would buy them, breed them and then conjure up some fancy name off the internet and demand lots of money for them.
  4. Yes looks like some sort of zebra the colour looks unnatural so might be under a blue light or just the way the photo is taken (flash etc). Really hard to come up with any sort of id from that pic, but chances are like 99% of zebras in the country it is a hybrid, call it a blue zebra or whatever you want..
  5. It is just cichlids 101.. If you stick 2 of them the same in the same tank unless they pair off the biggest one will be more dominant.. Sometimes it can settle and if the tank is big enough the less dominat one may even live, it is particularly bad in discus because they get sick when they get stressed. There are tons of threads in here on discus and most recommend 4+ or a compatible pair, use the search function above..
  6. If they aren't hurting each other then just leave them be they have obviously sorted out their differences and know who is boss now.. If one fish is so sub dominant that it is cowering in the top corner of the tank on its side with half its fins missing and wounds all over it then it really lost the battle and has no and you should remove it or the victor before it is killed..
  7. Yeah that's cool, my memory above still stands . If this is Jacks old tank then it sounds like someone used scotch brite to clean it at one stage.. Have you tries using the search function above to see if there is any previous threads or even me google might be able to help..
  8. From memory glassiers have posted in the past and said that getting scratches out of glass panels is so expensive and labour intensive that it is pretty much unachievable..
  9. Gutted, I hate the old "guess where the leak is" I have found having a completely dry tank and dry poly and filling it then waiting to see where the water is coming out the best method.. Have tried the food colouring method too but it didn't work I just ended up with blue water And yeah dehumidifier + airflow and heat seem to work well to dry the carpet, the mission is lifting it..
  10. Hmm but those racks will only allow 1 row of tanks? That's not cool, should be at least 2 if not 3 tanks high..
  11. And just thinking 3m long you could have at least an 8fter maybe 9fter down the long end
  12. Awesome man, good work If you need a hand with anything let me know..
  13. Yeah that is pretty much how it works
  14. Really depends on your tank size and the temperament of the individual fish involved.. But I have seem those fish together in a tank so it might work.
  15. What brand is the heater? A big heater on a small tank will be more prone to temp fluctuations depending on the quality of the thermostat in the heater..
  16. http://www.hollywoodfishfarm.co.nz/detail/view/seachem-prime-100ml/m/1177/ it is good stuff and goes a long way
  17. Probably best to wait, especially if you have treated with an anti-biotic it will probably have killed some of the bacteria in your filter so you tank will probably have to recycle anyway. Also best to let the current fish recover a bit before adding new fish and potentially stressing them out.
  18. Next time you do journey to a descent pet shop buy some prime and then you wont have to buy it again for years.. It might even be worth ordering some online somewhere and getting it delivered.
  19. There is probably no reason why you couldn't do both the minnows and guppies at 22-23C and they would both be fine, I have had minnows in tropical tanks before just crank the heater up slowly or acclimatise them really well..
  20. Congrats on the baby man! Really sorry to hear about the dog, that sucks I hope that the other dog turns up soon.. Hopefully someone finds the other one soon, and the cops can do something about it. Gotta love neighbours at war. We have neighbours pretty much the same, they waited until we went away for the weekend and let the dog off the lead and opened the gate, kept calling the pound and getting us fined every time the dog got out.. Turned out to be an expensive weekend away.
  21. I am not sure exactly, but I am pretty sure that usually when you make a plywood tank you just seal the plywood and then I would assume you could use standard aquarium silicone to seal the glass in..
  22. If they were getting beaten or stressed their fins would be all torn up and you would notice them getting beaten and hanging out in the top corners of the tank they are tough little fish and does take allot of beating to kill them. It could be the change of food, while NLS is fine for them, there have been reported issues with sudden changes of food causing bloat. But again you would notice if a fish was bloated because they look quite ill and get very fat and go off their food etc before they die.. Do you have any other clues or symptoms or anything you can offer?
  23. Meeting went really well and looks like we have some really good volunteers already, still room for more if anyone else wants to help, just let me know.. Also loans of fish/plants etc would be great We are particularly after some goldfish, some community type fish for our planted community tanks, and some big interest fish (maybe oscar or similar but oscar might sulk too much) to go in a 4fter with a large pleco.
  24. I would check the k rating of your bulbs first.. When I first started out I brought some 4300k tubes and they were a dull orange colour, if you really want to make your tank nice and bright and white then go to something like 10000k tubes and it may brighten it up without having to buy a new light.. How deep is the tank? Also is the cover glass removed/clean?
  25. What is the K rating of the tubes you are using at the moment?
