  1. Thats the problem with common names.. And the problem is if that person brought it as an electric blue then who knows what it is most likely a hybrid and you wont find any info on it, because you cant even put a Scientific name to it. The fish most commonly sold as electric blue is a Sc fryeri but I have seen zebra's like the one on trademe sold in stores as electric blue's.
  2. I strip ice blues at 2.5 weeks and the babies are free swimming (depends on temp my tanks are at 26C) and ready to eat flake stick them in a guppy trap or small tank so they can find food and they should be find. Alternatively you can stick her in her own tank and let her spit when she wishes who knows how long that will take its upto her. Good luck with the babies
  3. Yeah guess it could also be a young maleri there is alot of red in the body.. Who knows either way its a nice looking fish and im sure it will be enjoyed
  4. how was the trip to wet pets? I actually brought some fish from that shop in Wanga's in the weekend got 2 huge (hopefully female) blue dolphins for stuff all didn't think id ever find anything I would buy in there.. Maybe you can buy this tank its a bargain  http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 401636.htm
  5. If you only have a 200litre tank I wouldn't go with kenyi, maybe more yellows or up your number of demasoni to 10 or something like that. As they tend to go better in smaller tanks, Kenyi are pretty agro, for the same reason stay away from auratus too We dont tend to get too many africans that have a bright red on them, more of a browny red.
  6. Could be a red shoulder but as frenchy said its dammed near impossible to tell.. Personally I wouldn't try and name it as you aren't breeding from it just call it a peacock and enjoy it if everyones getting along then its all good All peacocks have a similar temperament unless you get a rouge and you have it in with mbuna who are generally harder on peacocks. In your tank you need to watch the giraffes they will eventually outgrow it and potentially even eat a fully grown demasoni and the zebra's may get agro
  7. I dont know much about CO2 systems so unsure if its a good idea but its probably what I would do, it just takes one thing out of the equation of things that could go wrong.. I would think that 9 days wont hurt much if your worried about algae growing you could cut back the amount of time your lights are on?

    How big

Mesh is probably a bad idea they will still get sucked too the mesh and get killed that way, Id either bury the intake in a pot of gravel (too large to go up the filter) or stick one of those round sponge filter or internal filter media things around it I think Krib fry are relatively large they seem to breed well and I think alot of people raise them on crushed up flake.
  9. Do you need the CO2? If it was me id just make it as simple as I could and minimize any problems for my partner and just turn it off for 9 days..
  10. Yeah I dont think you can legally keep or get shovelnoses in NZ. Maybe some of the syno's or something like that?
  11. I have pool filter sand in one of my planted tanks.. I think you can get it cheap or free I got it when I brought a heap of tanks and stuff off a guy, goto a pool place and get it, he said something about getting it used and washing all the crap out of it to get it cheap..
  12. Saw a breeding pair in with fronts etc the other day, mind you that was an 8ft tank..
  13. You could do it and the fish would be fine, but it is not recommended, the africans and sev would happily live at a PH of 7.5 but it would be frowned upon due to the differences in types of fish and you may run into aggression problems, if you did it id say you probably wouldn't be happy with it and ultimately end up getting rid of one type of fish..
  14. My thoughts exactly, if the shop don't go and buy the latest edition then they wont have the latest names, either way they're only zebra's who knows if the name is actually what they are or if they're even pure. Most shops will just change the name to "orange zebra" or "blue zebra" when they get in the shops so sc names are lost. And a search under that on the net will tell you what they're like Its when people don't label peacocks or other fish they expect to sell for $90 to $100ea that annoys me.
  15. Wet pets is the only shop worth a look, they got in some new stock yesterday so they actually have some fish Nothing special but they seem to go a long time before getting new fish in. What type of fish do you keep?
  16. 2200 will usually be quoted at no head height with no media.. You can easily measure what it is actually doing but timing how long it takes to fill a bucket and working out how many litres it would pump in an hour, either way I would expect that filter to be more than sufficient for your tank.
  17. Awesome man they're nice fish Let me know when you have some babies to pass on if you will ship, have tried to convince the other person in Chch with them to ship them but they wont!
  18. wow are those the ones you got off me? I certainly regret getting rid of them now! lol I got some more of afrikan in the weekend thou
  19. Anything that will fit in their mouths.. I feed mine my homemade food, decap brine shrimp, crushed flake mushed up peas, micro worms etc etc etc, as I said above they're alot easier to raise than other fish, its not like "you see that dot with what looks like a hair coming out of it well thats a baby fish" lol and they eat this "green water".
  20. Probably around 5mm total length, alot easier to raise than alot of the other fish
  21. Yeah go a little longer I stripped 2 yellows yesterday that I thought had been holding the same length one lot was free swimming the others needed tumbling, mind you if they're over 2 weeks tumbling is easy I just stick them in a guppy trap with an airstone keeping them moving.. Another way to tell when the babies are developing is her cavity will get darker.
  22. Yeah for sure Regardless of what they cost new the second hand value is pretty low, it really cracks me up when I see people trying to get $500 on trademe for a 3ft tank and a filter and light
  23. The only way you will get any number of fry surviving is to remove them.. You have 2 options really take the mother out stick her in her own tank and let her spit herself. Or you can strip her theres a link below to someone else asking the same question Good luck let us know how you get on! http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/anothe ... 24096.html
  24. They can spread just like anything else I guess maybe nothing else in the tank has it or has it as bad as the clown's, or maybe the clown's just get affected by it more.. I don't really know.
