  1. Those pics do seem to match up to http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/s ... hp?id=1008 the ones on the profile are a bit deeper in the body but id say they're alot older than the one you have pictured an yours should fill out some more..
  2. Actually thinking about it there were issues raised on here (I think) about the latest lot brought in which might be why I didn't get any.. I really couldn't remember why I didn't get any
  3. Yeah they're nice looking fish.. I would say good luck with the breeding but you don't really need it im sure you will breed them by the tank load before long Im sure you wont have any problems finding new homes for all the babies
  4. Top pic looks like a male to me dont know what the story is with the strip probably just breeding..
  5. Awesome looking fish firenzenz good luck with the breeding would love to see some of these get spread around
  6. lol I have one of those cutters too got it for $8 from bunnings.. I guess its all technique then.. I dip the end in lawnmower oil before trying to cut and yeah i do struggle to figure out what way to hold it, it looks so easy when the glass companies do it!

Nothing wrong with those photo's.. I find the best way to take photo's is to take 100's using different methods, tank lights on/off flash on/off various settings on the camera on/off and then put them all on the computer and delete the crap ones maybe ill get a couple that are worth keeping, I do have a pretty basic point and shoot camera though so a bit hard to get descent pics..
  8. Sorry to steal this thread, ive had issues cutting glass too but only ever spent less than $10 on a glass cutter and they just dont seem to work I cant seem to get a descent mark on the glass and have to keep going back over it and it just goes to crap.. I was thinking about buying a new cutter (with the theory being spending a bit more money and getting one that is self oiling etc might work a bit better) but theres so many on trade me that all say they're good.. Anyone tried any of these? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/SearchR ... ype=Search Thanks for any advice..
  9. There are a few african breeders up there (and on here) im sure they will contact you with what they have available. Personally I don't like buying from shops although some of the Auckland shops were ok when we were up there, most people in shops dont know much about Africans and do stupid things like mix female peacocks and encourage people to buy any peacock female to breed their own fish  Your pretty lucky to live in Auckland where there are alot of breeders keep an eye on private trade and exchange on here there are a few recent posts with africans for sale..

Hi, glad to hear there are more african keepers out there they're awesome Sounds like your already getting pretty sorted which is good, personally though I would loose the charcoal out of the filter unless you've added it for some reason (to removed meds etc) I dont use it unless I need it.. Also if you've just added these fish all at once I would hold off adding any more fish for a few weeks to let the tank cycle otherwise you may end up with new tank syndrome and loose them all. Keep testing your water looking for ammonia spikes etc. As for more potential tank mates you could add a few peacock males (or one species of male and female peacocks) which would add some colour. Also I would add some more demasoni I kept 6 once and they killed each other down to 3 they're pretty agro. You may be fine with 6 but I dont recommend it just from what happened to me.. You may also want to add some bristlenoses to help clean algae off your tank. Good luck and get some pics up
  11. They were on the wholesale list and there are a few floating around nz.. I dont know anyone who's got any though but there will be some around.. I dont really know why I didn't get any when they were on the list really..
  12. Awesome parry, haven't heard from you in a while.. hows things?
  13. lol yeah man this has been a huge issue on here.. There are probably 3 huge posts around talking about it They came out and took ours and were sweet as they could be so dont stress too much about it..
  14. Anytime man, the fish look good Hope you breed some soon, how big is your tank and what other fish do you have in there? Do you have a whole tank pic? Are the plants real?
  15. I think food grade containers mean they haven't had petrol or other harsh chemicals in them.. Most containers you can buy brand new will be sweet to transport the water providing you rinse them out etc before using them.
  16. Your fish look good tiden.. How many do you have? I see a fair few young ones cruising around in there
  17. If your fish are gasping at the water its a classic sign of lack of oxygen in the water.. Check your temperature in your tank (it should probably be around 26 unless you have discus in there) warmer water holds less oxygen. Add an air pump with air stones to get more oxygen into the water. Or get your filter going and getting the surface of the water moving, your filters flow will noticeably slow when it is clogged so you need to clean it out more or if its clogging too often add another filter or a bigger one. I haven't replaced any media due to it reducing flow rate most of the crap can be rinsed out of it. Even if you can get your filter running and move the surface of the water I would still suggest you add an airpump as well just so your covered in case your filter does get clogged. Good luck!
  18. lol I wish I had tropheus Maybe when the fishrooms setup I can try and track some down
  19. yeah I was thinking it could have been worse.. The maf guy was trying to be very knowledgeable when he came out saying that the danio's could cross breed (the ge zebra's and pearl's) and carry the gene without showing it.. Either way I thought I was going to have chlorine poured in that tank so was happy that the other fish got to survive
  20. The maf guy that came out was sweet with us.. We had 2 of them we brought with a community of fish we got off trademe, rang them and they came out a few days later.. The only thing I didn't like was they took my pearl danio's too, but the guy was sweet about it all and said he was sorry and it was policy, he didn't even really inspect my tanks for more (even though he didn't know what an african cichlid was let alone a cichlid..). He contacted me on the day and asked if I could have them bagged ready for him, apparently theres a letter in the mail for compensation from maf but that hasn't arrived yet.. We may have just struck a good maf officer or whatever but they were nice enough to us.. Sorry to hear others have had problems, im just glad I didn't have more danio's!
  21. Yeah my chilumba male looks wicked now hes all coloured up Just gotta find him a girl now! I haven't seen any lists of dominance in peoples tanks, I think it depends on soo many variables it would be very hard to see a pattern.. I mean you add smaller and bigger ones that naturally makes them more or less dominant, also individual fish are more or less dominant some are real mean some are really soft!
  22. Im sure we can still work something out.. My males better off with girls theres not many chilumba's around nz
  23. lol not to worry if you end up with all females we can sort something out Pity I just sold my second coloured up male!
  24. Id watch the angels they can be nasty critters But yeah I keep baby bristles with 10cm peacocks and they dont seem to get them so should be alright
  25. Im sorry to hear about it Matt, the tank looked awesome I hope it is covered by insurance and they catch the buggers that did it.. Its always been my biggest fear if someone breaks in is them smashing my tanks or harming my pets they cant be replaced!
