  1. If the bioballs are in the last chamber filter wool shouldn't get too clogged, I think my old via aqua filters have media under the bioballs anyway and that doesn't seem to get clogged..
  2. There is one small fish only shop, I think its called something fishy, have been there a few times its pretty small and dingy but I managed to find some fish that I had been after that he had randomly traded so you may find something or interest there..
  3. I was always told to get lettuce and mush it up in a container of water and stick it in the sun the water will go green and its good for the baby fish..
  4. Yeah they're cool saw some in Napier a while back.. They're not cheap think 80-90ea when they are around.
  5. keep an eye out in the mixed tanks in pet shops there are pairs in there thats if the shop doesn't want the earth for them..
  6. im sure you will find some, even just grab 6 for a couple of $$ off someone and grow them up they will pair pretty small and get rid of the extras
  7. lol sweet as well hope everything gets along for you
  8. Yep kadango' and giraffe's are african cichlids Is your albino a zebra?
  9. Epsons salt can help relieve the swelling but unless you find out whats going on it wont achieve much.. It could be anything internal blockage/damage dropsy, some sort of bloat, worms etc..
  10. The africans will survive and probably do alright in a ph over 7 but its probably not recommended to mix them all, I have seen it done and im sure it will keep getting done... Most people dont buffer the water in their grow out tanks and some people dont buffer their water at all so africans are getting bred and grown out in different conditions.. I think its upto what you want to do with your tank if you think it will look cool then give it a go There are differences in aggression and your oscar will probably grow big enough to eat most africans but they are pretty quick and good at getting out of the way so who knows..
  11. Sweet sounds good you will see fish compatible with your tank in the shops around here Was going to say if your interested in africans and you were coming thru when im home you could call thru say hi...
  12. You might be able to stick some filter wool under or around them to stop the rattle?
  13. Yeah wetpets is an alright store they hardly ever have much exciting and you can go in there weekly for a month and not see anything new but the fish are healthy and tanks look good Animates in Palmy has alot of sick fish and staff dont know much but might be worth a look if your prepared to risk it (or they may have cleaned things up in the last month). Levin petshop doesn't really do fish they have tanks but not many fish, Wanganui is worth a look a bit run down but might have something if your lucky... What type of fish do you keep?
  14. If that person is importing those filters I think they legally have to supply parts for them. Personally before buying one id do a search around the internet to see if they are better than a CF1200 if they are the best in the european market then there will be heaps of guff and reviews etc on them
  15. http://www.google.co.nz/search?hl=en&q= ... arch&meta=
  16. Try using google and searching for sexing angelfish.. http://websvirginia.com/angels/sexing/index.htm They are difficult to sex compared to other fish, the female has a bigger egg tube, and different profile some also mention looking at their bottom lip or something dont know if anything is 100% a net search should tell you! Good luck
  17. Awesome congrats Glenn, I was thinking yours should be getting close with all the posts about them recently
  18. yeah I think there are a few shops that sell them cheap on there if its brand new it will be complete unopened in box with all pipes and I think they come with media too mine did..
  19. Yeah but im sure that the person on trademe is a shop and if it is broken you will have more luck getting a new one off them than a random who only has one..
  20. The ECCO probably uses less power because its smaller and flows less water.. You cant beat a new one with a 1 year guarantee etc, and if it is broken you can just take it back get a new one not like off trademe!
  21. Yeah really fine sand can destroy filters, the fish will stir it up digging around or you will moving rocks catching fish etc.. Guess it all depends how fine it is, and the coral rock should be sweet to just chuck in there if your worried about it hose it and stick it outside in a bucked for a few days changing the water in the bucket a few times to soak out any crap that may be there but I probably wouldn't bother.
  22. Awesome news Malcolm, they must have been pretty big I just leave holding fish alone in the big tank and strip them (as firenz said) at 2.5-3 weeks, as much as the fish seems to suffer its best not to strip earlier (unless you have a tumbler etc ready) as they dont seem to do so well. Of course the time taken shortens with a higher temp or genetics it seems, have stripped 2 yellows at the same time out of the same tank but I brought them from different places that bred on the same day and one had with free swimming babies one that needed babies in the tumbler for a few days. If you have already moved the babies out into the container and they're getting alot you have setup then id leave them the male may be agro towards them if you just dump them back in. And the bristlenose shouldn't eat the babies I keep bristlenoses in all my grow out tanks to clean up any mess. If you decide to leave the female's to spit naturally they may hold for upto a month and generally wont eat, some females figure out how to eat a little and filter it through their babies but not many and they still seem to get skinny as. Good luck let me know how you get on
  23. I dont think anyone can stick an exact size on when they're ready to breed, I think it depends on genetics, how they've been grown up, how you condition them etc. Generally I go with the fish will be nearing breeding when they colour up, but it can take a little while longer.
  24. Id say your female would be near breeding they usually breed when they're fully coloured and get the pink belly
  25. Thats a nice looking pair I hope they go well and breed for you
