  1. Id stick them all together and watch them, then the female has 2 males to choose from (although the dominant one will most likely pair up with her) remember when your trying to breed pair forming fish it is always best to start with as many fish as practical from as many different sources to allow them to form their own compatible pairs..
  2. Chocolates are around and can be pricey too.. But they are around
  3. Most of the lionheads ive seen have been with malawi's and seem to thrive and breed and do well I dont see any need (except for breeding) to have them in their own or a species tank but each to their own thats for sure, they're cool fish! I have a male and im getting a female this weekend so fingers crossed for them being compatible..
  4. There are quite a few ppl breeding them around the place that I know of at least 4 2 of them in wellington..
  5. I would think 2 of any fish would be worst case scenario for bullying as the aggression cannot be spread out? And apparently the clown loaches are alot happier in larger groups? Hope the fish picks up hopefully they dont have internal parasites!
  6. So how high up the tank is has no affect at all because the pressure of the syphon has the same affect? I didn't think of it that way, have tried to use a spare external to pump to pump water for water changes and it doesn't like it very much at all!
  7. I haven't had any problems with them.. A filters flow rate (ie 1200LPH) is given with no media in it and also no pipes connected, once you put media in, stick the filter on the ground connect it all up the vertical height from the filter to the tank is the head height (the height the filter has to pump the water up). All of these things slow the stated filter flow rate down..
  8. Id buy the biggest and best one I could afford you will never regret buying a big filter you can diffuse the flow by turning the spraybar into the glass etc.. A CF1200 would be flowing alot less with media and operating at a head height etc anyway..
  9. Only keep one angel Either that or seperate the pair and hope they dont pair off with another angel..
  10. Yeah id definitely complain to seller.. If the bits not in the packaging then it didn't break in shipping so its their fault they sold you a dud Does water have to flow down the outside piece that has broken off?
  11. Looks like you could just silicon that up rough up around it first with sandpaper and then stick the 2 sides together and let it dry it might dry and be good enough that you can take it apart and stick it together without too much hassle.. Have you contacted the seller to say it was broken? Or did it get broken at your end or in the post?
  12. post a pic of the damage.. Any chance of using silicon to glue it back up? You may have to use sandpaper to rough up the edges to get the silicon to stick to the plastic but depending on the damage it might be possible, either way if id brought it broken id be feeling pretty ripped off..
  13. That sucks, it sounds random to start leaking after 2 hours of operation, did you bump it or change anything, ive only had them leak when I put them together wrong or forget a seal or something and then they leak straight away?
  14. So your interested in keeping african cichlids? Your yellow's and most of the nice "blues" you may have seen are african cichlids but the convicts are american cichlids so you cant really keep all of them together. If your going for africans plants don't usually last all too long, some have mild success but I haven't, they need and like rock work to hide in and establish territory's. Gravel, you can use whatever you want to really, africans like hard water with a high PH most people choose to use a substrate that helps them achieve this such as argonite or crushed coral, however you can buffer your water with a mix thats easy and cheap to make and there are plenty of recipes on the net.. Also keep in mind that your tank is relatively small (in terms of what some of the african species require) and some of the fish you may see may cause trouble best to research them and/or ask here before buying them : You cant go wrong with electric yellow's for a good start though. Good luck
  15. lol Yeah if you tell us what cichlids you want then we can give you the advice your after

    Peacocks

Is this the fish your talking about Addy? http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/can-so ... 24242.html Because your one isn't a kadango if your talking about the same fish...
  17. Will see what I can do when I get in touch with him
  18. Sometimes you can just stick a few nets in the tank and leave them and keep on checking what fish are in/around them when you walk past and just nab them, otherwise its chuck a net in and see if you can get the one you want.. Probably better to just leave them unless you can see they're having problems..
  19. I start all mine by siphoning to fill them up. You need to set your filter up normally, but not plugged in and you should start with it empty. Take the outlet pipe out the tank and below the level of the inlet in the tank, then suck on it starting a Typhon thorough the filter, it will take a while but the filter will fill and water will come out the outlet pipe, give the filter a shake and bang to get all the air out shut one of the taps stick the outlet back in the tank, plug the filter back in and open the tap it should go Good luck!
  20. Thats the same thing that happened to all my blue rams.. Either going off their food and fading away (even when treated with metro and prazi) or getting lumps on their heads and fading away again.. I put it down to crapy imported fish... Have tracked down some nice home bred ones waiting for the guy to get back to me.
  21. You can just leave them to it some may survive depending on whats in your tank and how big it is how many hiding places etc, if you want to make it easier on your females you can just strip them into the tank and let them recover faster.
  22. I think what David was asking was what type of community tank are you referring to? A community of fish can be anything for example I have a community tank in my kitchen of malawi's which are cichlids also.. So for example a lone or even a pair of krib's probably wouldn't be recommended in there, even though I have kept kribs in african tanks, Ram's for example wouldn't last due to temperement and also water conditions. Can you tell us what fish your planning to stick your krib in with But in answer to your question as long as your sticking your krib in a suitable tank it wont matter if there's only one.

    Peacocks

Yeah agreed there are alot of hybrids around and alot of interesting Id's going around (a few selling on trademe at the moment). Best bet for peacocks to breed from is to buy all from the same batch directly from the wholesalers (make sure the shop doesn't put 2 species of peacocks in the same tank) or buy from the same trusted breeder who actually know's what they're talking about and hopefully brought the fish with a scientific name... And people who breed them have to ensure they dont mix peacocks/hap's at all I have 6 peacock species all in different tanks to ensure there is no possibility of producing hybrids. And loving your pics you seem to have alot of nice fish
  24. In my opinion theres nothing wrong with keeping one cichlid in a community tank, im assuming you mean a cichlid that is compatible like a blue ram in with peaceful community fish. I think most people like to keep pairs maybe to keep the fish happy but also I guess to see if they have babies and watch all that happen in their tanks.
  25. Well if they're the same as the fish in the picture on that auction they aren't worth $70ea.. I haven't seen them so cant really comment, sounds like it could be a mix up with the importers?
