  1. Trout do not do well in ponds as they require cold highly oxygenated water. I know from experience---not that I would take undersized trout without a licence. They lasted a couple of years and hardly grew at all. Had to get rid of them when maf were coming around to give approval for quarantine (white clouds also). Put some in the local oxidation ponds and they lasted a couple of years as well.
  2. It is a female so will see what offspring are like eventually
  3. Mostly phosphate comes from food
  4. It sometimes looks more yellow than that. It was black and yellow when it hatched and it was from a hi yellow female. I kept it because the black patterns were infrequent and longitudenal. Not a mack snow.
  5. They have skinny tails when they first hatch then get fatter as they mature. It is where they store their fat reserves. Too fat means overfeeding with the wrong food but just fat is good.
  6. Here is a teenager I kept back from last season---a bit different and from a very hi yellow female
  7. Don't be racist. Black worms are better.
  8. Alanmin may not want to disturb them while they are busy laying eggs.
  9. Phosphoic acid does not give false phosphate readings it gives actual phoshate readings. It makes the hydrogen ion available (to lower the pH) and forms phosphate. If you were to feel it was absolutely required to adjust the pH down you would be better to use dilute hydrochloric acid. A pH of 6.8 or 7.2 will not kill fish but an instantaneous change might. It certainly would not be good for fish.
  10. Welcome and enjoy your time here.
  11. No. Martial arts fighting is more disciplined and they don't get distracted chasing a ball and can concentrate better on the fighting.
  12. I think more people turn up at A&E from rugby than martial arts.
  13. You have to eat all the goodies yourself? Tuff at the top.
  14. Merry christmas to you and yours.
  15. Compliments of the season to you and yours.
  16. By far most of the fish bought would be from retailers. The percentage of fish keepers on this site would be small as well. It is always difficult to treat a disease unless you know what you are treating. The days when we used to throw broad spectrum antibiotics like chloramphenicol are well gone so the best answer will be to find out who can do a reliable test at a reasonable price. Perhaps the polytech as suggested by LA or Massey. I had an autopsy done on beardie a wee while ago and they did bacto and viruses---cost nearly $300 and would have been done in a vet lab. I have heard of importers getting bills for $4000 for testing one species when done by maf.
  17. Mycobacterium marinum is the marine infective agent and I think we are talking fresh water here. In my view if it is piscene tb best to destroy and start again. It might be worth getting a suitable antibiotic and treating for aeromonus---it is pretty common in the environment.
  18. Please excuse my ignorance but what is FMB? Piscene tb is caused by a micobacterium but there are also non tb micobacterium infections in fish. Mico bacteria can be difficult to treat even with gram positive antibiotics as they have a protective slime coat. Many years ago there were a lot of very crook looking goldfish about and I got a friend who was a government analyst in a micro lab to do some work on them. He came up with the cause being aeromonus and the cheapest effective antibiotic was bactrim (sulphamethoxazole and trimethoprim) it is a bacteria commonly found in the soil and was about that time also the cause of the hospitalization of some people with rotting groins and armpits from swimming in a poorly maintained spa pool. Bactrim can be dosed at quite a few times the suggested dose without harm.
  19. They still put the live male day old chicks through them don't they?
  20. Fish diseases are only the problem of MPI while the fish are in quarantine. Once released they are the owners problem. Many diseases are carried by fish without them showing any signs of having them. If the fish becomes stressed through environmental conditions or if their immune system becomes weakened through present or previous environmental conditions then the disease may manifest. Many diseases can take a long time to manifest. Keeping tropical fish can be a challenge as they are perishable goods.
