  1. I think it is a great idea. Better to have factual information on diseases than be told years ago that turtles were prohibeted imports because they can carry salmonella when half the animals on earth can. That way if the powers want to ban an animal they will have to front up with real reasons. If something is going to destroy the native bird population in short time if it escapes then that is good reason rather than the bumpf we are getting at present. I am in--free knowledge is always a good thing.
  2. You are probably best to buy the hoses made for it as cheaper plastics will probably kink or compress on the inlet hose.
  3. It would be easier to control in a pond because a bit would not matter and if the fish don't eat enough you can scoop it out with a net and put it on the compost heap.
  4. If he wants money---methinks he might like a tortoise.
  5. That is the problem with common names. If you use both there is no confusion and most people will know what you are talking about.
  6. Are they black or just uncoloured comets? If they are black they are probably reject black moores which have been crossed or reverted to single tail. There may have been black moores in the pond which have crossed with the comets and picked up the single tail and retained the black.
  7. I have frogs and newts and they are seperate. As Livingart says you may get away with it but why take the risk. Since frogs have a pretty keen interest in eating each other the chance of survival of the newt would not be great unless it was adult. Newts have less desire to eat each other once they have morphed. I didn't realise my newts had bred until I saw a baby in there, had a careful look and removed 58. I put them all in another terrarium with less shelter and two weeks later had 30. If they are seperate they can't eat each other.
  8. Mine are inside and they lay every 3 weeks as well. If you watch them carefully you will learn their wee habits and be able to tell when they are about to lay.
  9. I have one female that laid 8 each time 7 times last year and another that laid 4-5 but 4 times, and this year a lot less so they vary a bit.
  10. If you can get it oxygen is better than air and will keep the fish alive a lot longer if there is a holdup.
  11. It may be an algae being fed by too much food and therefore too much nutrient. Does it leave a green sludge on your hands when you put them in the water?
  12. Make sure it is fruitfly proof, doesn't get too hot in the sun, has an area of clean water to go in if they wish (usually terrestrial till breeding at about 2-3 years). Feed a varied diet: fruitflies, whiteworms, bloodworms, aphids etc. Plenty of places to hide. You can encourage them to stay in the water by only feeding them there but I think that is not natural and I only feed my young ones on the land. Adults that are breeding spend a lot more time in the water and get fed in and out of the water. They are pretty hardy once morphed, are best not handled and are more active at night.
  13. Your purple light is probably around 10000k and is high in blue and red (purple) light which is what plants need. Tall plants will grow to the surface and get light. It should grow any of the Echinodorus species that are taller such as amazonicus, bleheri, ozelot, barthtii, red special, red rubin, martii, uraguayensis etc. Also Hygrophilla stricta, polysperma, polysperma "rosanervig", salicifolia; Sagittaria, vallisneria, Ludwigia repens. As advised previously I would stay away from floating plants as they will block the light and be the only thing that grows well. The larger plants like Cryptocoryne and Echinodorus sp. will need feeding through the roots.
  14. In my view the main problem is that the proportions are all wrong. They have very little surface area for the volume of water and they are difficult to get adequate lighting if you want to grow plants.
  15. Hence the old saying "made round to go round"
  16. The silliest part is that if you considered it asault (which it is) and defended yourself by donating a bleeding nose and aching groin to the person with such a big sense of humour they would fail to get the joke.
  17. The local authority supplying the water is required to do regular chemical and biological analysis of the water so if you ring the local council and talk to the waterworks department they can tell you.
  18. They have a pretty unusual life cycle.
  19. They have never been the same since meeting with the aliens.
  20. Mosquito larvae are very good food value. The nuplii are better food value and are small and fed to fry. They have a yolk sack and therefore that is added food value. Provided the fish can eat the shrimp and it is not over fed causing polution they should be great. Best thawed and the water changed to get rid of nutrient that may polute the tank.
  21. Looks like planaria or flat worms. Usually caused by excessive feeding and too much waste in the tank. Harmless.
