  1. They might survive but why risk it. There aint that many out there so someone has been knocking them off.
  2. Only takes one cup of petrol and block the entrance. Don't light the petrol.
  3. I think a few people thought the albinos would brumate outside like the normals but only the normals came out of brumation. I brumated mine at 16-18 degrees and they were OK.
  4. There is a reason why they are only found in the top of the North Island. Albinos are weaker than normals and they may be as well.
  5. Could be a sagittaria grown emersed but some of the leaves look a bit wide.
  6. The babies will not have enough condition on them to hibernate for probably 3 years. You will need to incubate the eggs and raise the babies seperately.
  7. Somebody bought it. It is probably a bit like the albinos, not as easy as some think, or they would be hopping all over the place.
  8. All occupiable rooms should be built to the same standard so a rumpus room should comply as a bedroom. The rooms that are not occupiable are the garage, toilet ,laundry and bathroom. The only problems I could see with converting a room to an additional bedroom would be to go from a one bedroom to more in which case a laundry would be required or if the dwelling had onsite sewage treatment in which case the capacity might need to be increased. To the best of my knowledge domestic dwellings are exempted from fire and egress requirements (they used to be but I have been out of it for a while).
  9. From the seller's description----yellow with black eyes and a patch of green
  10. I can't see council fees being $big for a job like that. You may need a report and design from an engineer but that would depend on when the house was built and what standard it was built to. It is possible to design a stair case to comply with NZS3604 but this would not cover the cutting of a hole if the floor/ceiling if that is designed as a bracing diaphragm. It shouldn't need a resource consent so it should only be building consent fees. I say again----go talk to the local council building department and get some free advice from those that are going to in the end approve the the job and hopefully know what they are talking about. If the third room is not connected to the rest of the house it would have been built as a games room or some other use and may or may not be easily converted to a bedroom.
  11. That white shell on the boy should come right with a good basking area and natural light but it might take a while and good diet.
  12. I don't think they would put out enough heat or UV. I use one to heat a cabinet but I removed the bulb and put it in the bottom blowing over a heat emitter on a thermostat. I don't think it would be easy to run one of them on a thermostat and achieve what is needed. The UV needs to be close(about 300mm) from the lizard and the fan would make too much air movement that close. I use heat emitters and proper UV lights and that way you get heat without light at night and you can get a warm end and a cooler end.
  13. You have obviously tried to do the right thing and are to be congratulated. Unfortunately there are people out there that think of themselves as animal lovers but cause more problems than they solve. I think all you can do is keep plugging away at the SPCA as they are the only ones able to do anything about it. It may involve going in to their office and talking to them personally. I have dealt with people like this who accumulated the local stray cats but couldn't feed them or look after them. We used to thin them out once a year with the SPCA and they were in that poorer condition they had to be put down. The joys of dealing with the public.
  14. You can go in to your council office and look at the house plans to see what the original plans were for free or a small fee. If it is more than one story it is possible that the floor to the top part is a reinforcing diaphragm and cutting the stairwell may compromise that. It depends a bit on when the house was built and wether it was a buildig permit (prior to 1991) or a building consent. You may even get some free advice from your local Building Inspector. I have a friend who used a very respected local builder to convert a shed to a very tidy sleepout and now has all sorts of problems because no resource consent or building consent was taken out. You pay your rates to your council so why not use their brains for free, it is better advice usually than talking to the local drunk at the pub who only thinks he knows what he is talking about.
  15. Every time I have bought indica it has turned out to be rotundifolia
  16. I sent some albino frogs (don't ask as don't have any now)to Auckland airport to airport and since they had only fish or turtles on their livestock labels I said turtles. They refused to take them as they were not in a plastic container. I explained that they were frogs and inside an icecream container inside a carton and they still refused. After I kicked up and said I was paying them megabux to get them there Ok and could put them in the post for less than $10 they came out with a written instruction which said they had to be in a plastic container and after much discussion again they took them. They said it was to stop them getting crushed and my answer was that the money I was paying them should be enough to stop some idiot puting a great dane on top of them.
  17. If you want something similar that will survive submersed in reasonable light try Alternanthera reineckii roseafolia.
  18. Freshly shucked oysters and mussels are alive---not that I am advocating or would wish to eat live (or dead) goldfish
  19. I always find Organism has a good selection of plants and fish at reasonable prices.
  20. Redwoods grow a lot of plants so if you know what you want they may have it out the back if not on display. Closed Fridays.
  21. I use an exo terra with the base divided in half with water and driftwood in half and potting mix covered with fine gravel in the other half. I find one light of 8-9 watts is not enough for plants but two is. Growing miniature figs on the land and xmas moss and hydrocotyl in the water.
  22. Hrd to tell without a picture. People are prepared to breed any sort of angels to each other so there are some weird angels out there. The genes are in pairs and when I was breeding angels I was going for a double marble gene to give a full marble pattern and one or two gold genes to give a bit of gold colour to the head. I have seen koi with a single marble gene and I don't like the look. To me a good koi is red/gold
  23. I had 600mm x 600mm tanks with slightly smaller tanks inside. Each internal tank was divided into sections about 70mm x 70mm with mesh on the bottom. To do a water change you lifted the internal tank and dropped it. Also in those days the fish were mainly fed live lumbriculus worms.
