  1. A very wise man once said "There is only one god but is it your god or my god."
  2. Don't clean any filter at any time unless it needs it. If you want to be clean clean freek clean the outside of the glass.
  3. If you stay down here for a year you will start to get used to it. Sheryls sister was on the top floor of the public hospital in February and remembers it well. Just remember that these buildings are designed to flex so they are doing the right thing and all the ones that don't do the right thing have already been demolished. What worries me is that nearly all the Christian churches have or are being demolished but the mosque is OK. Shows that the building standards have improved (maybe). As an old drainlayer I used to come accross when working used to love to say: "Never had this trouble under a labour government".
  4. Only clean the filters lightly in tank water and only when the flow is severely restricted. Often a good flow can be restored by just cleaning the pipes. The gunge helps feed the good bacteria but it also helps with finer physical filtration. We don't think anything of you other than you are a beginner trying to do the right thing just like all the experienced people on here were once themselves.
  5. The Colonel would be pleased
  6. I think people worry about it too much. Look at the colonies of native lizards in NZ that occupy a very small area and have inbred probably for thousands of years without any noticable problems. Of course it is different with humans but if there was no inbreeding we would not have any people to stand for parliament.
  7. Your filter is a biological filter rather than a physical filter. It is the bacteria in the filter that do the work and the other stuff in the filter is just a place for them to live. The gunge that you get building up assists in feeding the bacteria so the filter only works properly when it is patially full of gunge. You are not doing yourself or your fish any good by trying to keep your filter clean as it defeats the whole purpose of the thing. Clean the filter a bit if the flow is seriously reduced otherwise leave it to do the job it is there for.
  8. If it goes well it is called selective line breeding and if it goes sour it is called inbreeding.
  9. Looks great. What did you use to dye the seahorse and the red weed or are they both plastic? At least they all avoided the oil.
  10. In nature there can be a high percentage of offspring from fish, reptiles etc that have deformities and usually they will not survive because of natural selection. If we keep all the deformed offspring and paticularly if we breed them we will end up with all out tanks full of deformed fish. Having said that, this is the way that the deformed goldfish sold in the shops were actually created.
  11. It gets even better. Since had a [phone call from Builder number 2 and also his supervisor to say that as far as they know work is still being done by them. They are going to contact supposed builder 3 and find out what is up and ring back. Oh what fun and the hot water cylinder is still leaking.
  12. I have kept a number of different fish outside in a pond but only over summer.
  13. September--not much damage February--lots of damage to house and contents and after shocks bring more. Two inspections by EQC one by insurance company--decide EQC will handle repairs so organise a builder. He inspects with EQC and they decide no building consent required, just get on with it. Builder not happy--consults with Engineer and council then pulls out of job. Inspection from new builder with another EQC person (in the meantime I have spoken to two senior building people at CCC both of whom I knew well and had worked with at another Local Authority, and understand how it works from a Council point of view. No need for a big showdown-- builder wants a building consent and will send around architect and engineer to suss out. They both do their stuff then hear no more for a few weeks Meantime hot water cylinder springs a leak and needs urgent attention. Get plumber round who says tank needs to be replaced (specially made as not standard dimensions) but we will have to pay him because EQC have not paid invoices for master plumbers for many months and he is owed 200k. They will pay if they drop their hourly rate to X. Contact builder who says no problem--send to me and Fletchers (he is subcontracted to) will pay within two weeks. All is looking good. Get a phone call yesterday from new builder. EQC have turned it over to insurance company. No one tells us but can only assume that repairs will top 100k. Meet with 3rd builder next Wednesday. So much fun--Outer Mongolia is becoming more atractive by the minute. On the good side we have a few leopard eggs and a beardie looking like a bag of marbles.
  14. You will never get to heaven now.
  15. I would doubt that level of nitrate would be a problem.
  16. The Malayan trumpets will be more easily killed by copper because they are livebearers and don't have eggs encased in gel that may give some protection.
  17. Another way would be to start them off on a small amount of grindal worms as they will stay alive for a day or more.
  18. If the filter has water running through it OK then leave it. They only need cleaning if the flow is substantially reduced.
