    Clownfish

same as michael jackson i think... have seen some interesting looking ones in the LFS from time to time
  4. my clarkii does the same, anything too big for it to eat he drags across the tank and feeds his house
  5. sweet i want a couple... wonder what the controller is like
  6. yeah my 14ks are cheap, and the 10k is pricey - can rem what brand though
  7. if its your only bulb, id go for no higher than 14k. the difference in brightness between the 20 and the 14 will be heaps. i have a 10k in middle and 14k either side, and the difference between them is massive, 10k is about twice as bright

    TDS

yeah the lower the better, ro water should be under 5ppm TDS i think? i think they need calibration though, needs calibration fluid to do it.
  9. yea a 2 footer could get away on you pretty easily...
  10. theres a diy thread of a skimmer that TM made - he sourced acrylic tube in chch for a reasonable price. hunt down the thread or PM him, he'll point u in the right direction

    Japanese tank

    i think i know....
  12. interesting, the blue fades first with age.......
  13. i find that if i suck some hot freshwater through the airline it cleans out salt/calcium deposits, and stops this noise
  14. a bit more would be nice, but you can prob get away with that much. just make sure you have plenty of flow in the tank from powerheads / streams etc. I have a 4900lph pump on my 800l system - not sure how much it moves in real terms due to head loss and elbows in the plumbing.
  15. id love to [re]do a coldwater tank, [free livestock mmmmmm] but need to get a chiller [and somewhere for the second tank] first. its cool to have a local tank
  16. i was having a smoke on the porch last night, and im sure i saw 2 cleaner shrimp stealing a car.... may have been your ones

    Carbon Bags

i have made a fluidiser, but it has been brought to my attention [cheers cookie] that i may be using too much carbon. i run 1kg at a time on an 800l system. change it every month. what kind of quantities are people using? i have also started to run UV, which some claim eliminates the need for carbon altogether. any opinions on this?
  18. its easier than a tropical marine tank, but keeping it cold is the biggest problem. i had a 50-ish litre cold tank for a while, but had a hard time keeping the temp down. was fun, those blennies have alot of character, they will dance for food remember those critters get a 100% water chance twice daily in nature too - long term you would need to sort out feeding, not sure what all those animals eat in the wild.

    soap

the eco store has plant-based nitrate / phosphate / fragrance / sodium laurel sulphate / etc free detergents available at supermarkets. makes good handwash for those of us who put hands in tanks its about $4 for 500ml, in the dishwashing detergent aisle.
  20. those sps will love the 250 that water should clear itself up in a couple of days. asw or nsw?
  21. sweet 3 halides would be the one though i think.... i should have gone 4 on my 1800mm tank, only have 3 :-?
  22. not yet, but mine isnt that dirty. i have seen some peoples with coralline, algae, etc growing in skimmer body. ill probably do mine before it gets to that stage, not sure how much difference it would make though. my tank seems to keep me busy with other chores, so unless it was really bad i dont think id get around to it.
