    power bill

ouch dude.... i think mine added up to around 50-60 a month for the tank, going by the calc that was on the site earlier
  2. 'ere tis http://www.blowfish.co.nz/tank/ missing new sump pics though, have converted old display tank into sump for a bit more volume & to handle more evaporation. 6x2x2 foot
  3. decent size... gunk looks quite wet tho what kind of air flow is going through it?
  4. any glass 5mm+ thick should be fine, this will block most of the bad UV. the second piece isnt really necessary. check out the design of some halide pendants of the same wattage, these should be a good gauge of what is "safe" - thickness, distances etc. it would pay not to let any of the unfiltered light out of the reflector - whether it be into the tank, room or your eyes. theres a recent thread on this site where a guy had to have some medical attention due to "arc eye" resulting from an unshielded DE halide.

    sand

dont listen to the sand haters man...... plenty [most?] of people have a sand layer in their tanks and everything runs smoothly.... just give it a vacuum once a month or so. i have a mix of 1.5mm aragonite, coral sand and oolitic [spherical] coral sand. it gets blown around a bit, but its not too bad. just try moving your pumps around a bit to minimise the effects of them on the bottom. you do need a bit of flow on the sand though to stop crap settling on it. its best to keep the rocks off the sand if poss - i have pumps behind the rockwork to permanently keep sand out from under / behind them, which works really well.
  6. i thought that the garlic thing was a myth?

    MH Hours

    i have2x 14k on 10hr, and 1x 10k on 7hr, + actinic on 12hr
  8. i have 3x 150w all-in-one MH lights that seem to have been shop-fittings, they were set up to run on an in-roof rail system. before that, i had one that was supposed to be mounted in roof or in wall. any halide fitting is fine as long as you can mount it and run the right bulbs. i havent found any of the hydro shops to be useful with tank lighting. half of their staff cant even spell bulb, let alone know what a kelvin rating is......
  9. one way to settle this.... experiment bags not providing the livestock......
  10. in using that reef success calk at the mo. got a few sps that seem to be doing well on it. my only problem with it is that some of it tends to clump together in the packaging and not dissolve properly, just sits around in the sump.
  11. i cant see a seio doing any more or less damage to anything than a stream. they both suck a fair bit of water through - if anything in the tank is too weak or stupid to get away from the intakes, then i imagine they would get nailed no matter what the sticker on the side of the product says.

    lucky worm

mate get rid of it! havent you seen this movie? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100814/
  13. mines about the same, skimming pretty wet. what deltec is that?
  14. can see it now... F="you care more about that f**king tank than me!" M="yeah well they smell better than you and dont nag as much"...
  15. some of mine do the same, but always seem to come back within a few hours. heaps of corals seem to do similar things, maybe its just a cycle that they go through like us sleeping...
  16. whaddaya mean not good for you? free food!
  17. mine cleans as often as fish will let him... also will clean the end of a stick if it has had food on it
  18. i hit 29.4 a couple of days ago, 28.4 yesterday with a full size room fan on the tank. have changed light cycles to try and limit the amount of extra heat going in during the afternoon.
  19. yeah mine got hammered by them too. bastards. still got a couple of small pieces left
  20. aah christchurch... brings back memories
  21. er.... user error strikes again  it has a flow restrictor, i had the bypass tap on all along    works fine now, about 2x waste to 1x clean
  22. the charge isnt much, i think my last 6-monthly bill was about $40. be interested to see if it changes much. will get a 200l-ish barrell for "waste" and give it to the garden / washing machine etc i think. worst thing about paying for auckland tap water is that you cant drink it coz it tastes like waikato river / cow s**t / farm runoff / chlorine all mixed together and filtered through an old miners sock. because thats what it is
  23. just got a 4 stage ro-di unit. it seems to spit out about 15-20x more waste than filtered water. any aucklanders noticed a big increase in their water bill when using one of these?
  24. sounds pretty much like human breeding behaviour i have one of these fish, its only small but it seems really bossy. it bites me constantly when i have my hands in the tank. luckily its only about 3 inches long, but im not looking foward to it doing the same when its grown up. some sites list them as "semi-aggressive" toward other fish / clowns.. http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=103&N=0
