  1. i started with a 3 footer that grew to a 6 footer ,now i have both and still more tanks to come. i think i have cichlidacitis?.is their a cure? i think you should work out what size you need and go one size bigger!.call it a saftey margin, and more room for fish my tanks are 500x500 and the 6 footers 500x700 plenty of room for rock walls etc

  5. When my male dwarf gourami had flesh wounds, I didn't need to treat, I montiored him and he came right on his own accord, the only time I have known them to chase other fish is when they are building a bubble nest, they keep others away from the area, but even then they are not aggessive, just don't want anyone to destroy there work. I would suggest keeping an eye on all of your fish - try and work out who is hassling who as I have had no experience with tetras. I have heard of gourami's not being the "best" strains in NZ but have breed the dwarfs and find them great little fish. When you said that you had female gourami's were they silver/grey, as females are hard to find - most petshops aren't able to get them in as they aren't colourful so the importers don't bring them in. I am local in Wainuiomata so if you are still having problems, give me a pm with your phone number - or pm me for mine and we can discuss further if you wish.
  6. what other fish do you have in the tank?? I have dwarf and gold gourami and find them to be peaceful fish - the fish in my tank that goes the gourami is a male sword, and they are in with dwarf cichlids.

    algae eater

We have bristlenoses living in indoor coldwater tanks with no problems - just bring the temp down slowly when you put them in.
  9. all of my gourami love pleco tabs, therefore I count it as part of their diet and add a few more for them. as for your bottom feeders you could try feeding them at "lights out". other things to try are zuccinic and shelled peas etc - but the gourami also like to eat these.

  11. oh bugger - and here I thought you might be offering to the highest bidder
  12. so what are you planning to do with the plant?
  13. I have both Kribs, gourami's and bristles in my tank - I have a heavily planted tank, with caves for the kribs which they like, wood for the bristles and plant cover for the gourami. if you have floating plant the gourmai (espically the dwarf gourami) will build bubble nests in the tank. I find that the gold and kissing gourami have more personatily that the dwarfs, but it all comes down to what you like. sorry have no experience with the tiger barbs

    Hutt Pets

i have to agree with both mystic and blue, they rock! for service and satisfaction you can do no wrong,i personally would miss the chain store. they will even do "specials" on" special orders".as blue said just take your time and observe before buying, they will not boot you out.The new owners have done wonders, and they are great people to deal with, its a pleasure to shop there, nice and organised now and room to move,Ask for ben, check it out!
  16. Will a pair of my blue rams spawned on Saturday evening in my community tank, I expected to wake up Sunday morning to no eggs - but they are still there with both parents taking turns to guard and fan eggs. will have to see what happens.
  17. Hi Ikan, welcome, whereabouts in Wellington are you?? the main petshops around this area are Animates x2, Hutt Pets in Lower Hutt, and our local in Wainui. But then alot of us buy sell and trade amongst ourselves. If you aren't sure what type of fish you want - then I suggest getting in touch with billaney - he breeds alot of fish and sells them - but seeing his set up you just might find the fish you want for tank or tanks.
  18. steel frames equals "no worrys" its the easiest way to go.
  19. did a filter clean on the fluval 403 yesterday, and when i got up around midnight last night noticed the tank was not good, when the filter was put back in the cabinet the out hose got a kink in it which i didnt notice!, no flow at one end, all the goodies in the filter gone and a spike that hit the roof!! my africans were not happy, water clouding and all that.time to hit the panic button. clean and reset the filter graduall water changes chucked a bag of filterez in there just to help things along.its 4am and off to bed with things settling down again and everybody breathing normal again. just as well im getting new hoses and a gentle reminder to NEVER assume that everything is going to be all right just because you have done it hundreds of times before!!!!!. so check check and check again.cause i didnt i nearly lost all my fish
  20. and from a beginners point of view they may find the description of lighting a bit difficult to understand - ie "t5 or t8" you might want to advise what these are/do.
  21. unsure of that, but do know you can get water in buick street petone that comes straight out of the ground no additives, people come for miles to get it and its free
  22. but then again they have been with the malawis already so could be alright. until a mate talked us into giving him our loaches we had two living in with our malawis and they wheren't bothered at all.

    Snails : (

I was told scunk loaches would work as I had a snail problem - so I went and got a couple - my snail population has taken an extreme dive. I now find the odd one not an infestation like I used to have. so I recommend a scunk loach or two - they have a great personality.
  24. try waterplantz (John Peters) on trademe - he usually has a good selection of plants.
  25. ahhhh!!they must be the "nonameacaras" recently discovered in the upper reaches of the costamillion river!! :bounce: lol lol
