  1. ce-mix do a range of products.i used quick patch, multi bond and aqua stop.to colour it they make oxides .i used all these over polystyrene.mix up a slurry paint it on with a paint brush, many light coats.no need to seal it thats what the aqua stop doesthese were designed to do water tanks and ponds i think, cant remember what was on the containers.mine has been in with my africans for about 3 years.no problems at all. only issue i had,and it was my mistake, not the products. was put plenty of coats on to get a good thickness as when a rock or something damages it you get a white hole showing.i only did about 4 coats,in hindsight i should have doubled that number.all availiable at bunnings.
  2. I haven't kept angels, but I would be careful as when the angels got bigger - they would be likely to go after the dwarf gouramis. in saying this if the angels are small when you get them they will hopefully see the gouramis as tank mates and not something to hassle.
  3. What/who else is in the tank, can you advise who his tankmates are, and what you have in the tank, ie driftwood. is there anything that is sharp that he has brushed against?
  4. and if you are going to be putting cichlids in the tank the bigger the better - the wider you can go the better espically if you are going to be putting rockwork in the tank. and if you have rocks the stronger the glass the better.
  5. Also do you have bristlenoses? or Plecos? Bristlenose males grow bristles females don't, but plecos don't grow bristles at all and grow to a much larger size.

We can then share our secrets on how to keep ( or not ) swordtails and make them grow ( or not ) . Successes and failures are equally important in working out the best receipe. See you all Wednesday, current members and any new bodies are welcome. cheers Karen
  7. the latin name for these fish is Trichogaster trichopterus - they are commonly called Gold, blue or three spot gourami. they get to around 10 cm in length. are you sure that you have a female? look at the bottom fin -the end where it meets the tail - is this rounded or does it end in a point? if rounded you have a female - if not it is a male. if you go to profiles and advise where abouts you are in the country - we might be able to suggest where you could find a companion for your fish.
  8. What colour and what size are your gourami? snakeskin gourami are not dwarfs, I have not seen any or heard of any male snakeskin - have two females myself and they are 20+ cm in length. if you say you have "dwarf" is it possible that they are in fact the females of the dwarf gourami which are grey whereas the males are colourful. as for your problem - is it just the stomach area that is fat or roundish or is she looking like a porupine. ie are the scales sticking out - if the scales are affected then she could possibly have dropsy - the end result of this is usually death. if it is just the stomach that is round you could try cooking some peas and removing the hard outer casing - this could help. as the others have said - if you could provide a photo of the affected fish - we could advise what type of gourami it is and it would be easier to diagnose and possibly help with solving the problem. cheers Karen
  9. Just a reminder to all - this meeting is TONIGHT - look forward to seeing you all there - NEW members or visitors most welcome - come along and meet some fellow fishy people. to all existing club members - remember the meeting starts early tonight!!!!!! Karen
  10. If you are wanting something to control algae you will need to do your research as alot of "catfish" will not eat algae or much of it and some will only eat it when small. so this could limit your choices unless you choose it cause you like the "catfish" and then "if" it cleans your tank consider it a bonus. with algae it is atually better if you can find why the algae appears in the first place and control it that way rather than getting something to do away with it after.
