  1. Hope all you lot are enjoying you night at Marcell's while I'm here at home stuck with the rug/tank rats. I can't even look at the Takashi book I bought today as I think it's gone to the TT meeting. Mr L
  2. Is that not the coolest thing all you puffer addicts have ever seen!!!!
  3. Don't forget to bring a plate for the potluck tea
  4. If people forget about Scalares place I'll be home with the kids. I may beable to do GOOD prices for tanks stands. Where I work does tables so I may beable to sneak the stands in :-) Zinc plated and powder coated in the colour of choice. Mr L
  5. We have 2 Palembang puffs (sp) There was 3 but one got an infection. They are close to 6 inches and are fresh water. Pics are some where on here.
  6. jn said You are more than welcome to pop in. It will be an honour to put another face to name.
  7. Hear hear!! i agree Wok!!! Poor wee girl
  8. My condolences to you. I feel like crying. I don't like hearing stories like that. That is a disgusting thing those *&$%^#@'s did. I agree let them suffer a terrible fate. I think it is one thing to deface something, another thing to steal but it is really bad when you start deliberately killing loved and precious pets.
  9. I have seen neons disappear when angels were in the tank. Small angels ok but large ones would be iffy My 2c worth Mr L
  10. We have just put a thermostat in our Plattie tank the other week. They are fine at 12deg C though not recommended. Our tanks run about the 26 mark. As for the M-F ratio. The females can change to infertile males. It is probably better to get a 2f - 1m minimum. Mr L
  11. Correct me if I'm wrong Wilson. CAPS meet on Thursday evenings about 7pm. TT meets Saturdays at about 5pm. Bring something for a pot luck tea and enjoy. The idea of TT is to keep it family friendly. We have 2 rug rats that aren't in tanks and Shaz works nights during the week. Hence the meeting time and our lack of attendance to CAPS. PLUS we have spares if others have problems and are available basically 24-7. Currently we are procuring books for a "TT Library". Mr L
  12. I had mine in a breeding tank to themselves and they were spawning like mad. The fry won't have a chance in a community tank as the other fish will probably eat the eggs and fry. THe behaviour you are observing of them chasing each other is most likely spawning. The males can be a little nippy when spawning but it is all just passionate love biting  To sex the females are fatter than the males and the best time to compare them is before feeding time. Males often are more golden than the females which are very silvery. The other thing i have noticed is that they do not breed true. They fry i have grown out from my blue danios are just ordinary zebra danios with good long fins. I am going to try spawning a couple of the fry together to see what i get soon
  13. I plan to affiliate the club very soon so that Totally Tanked will get the benefits of being part of the FNZAS family. But would like to see a good turn out to get as much feedback and support as possible. **wink wink** Perhapes at the August meeting we can seriously sit and discuss the more technical stuff. Assistance and suggestions are always welcome.

Good! That is what is supposed to happen! Good on you Sharn for asking!
  15. Someone has taken half of my year. I feel ripped off!!! It is August already!!?? I worry that if i blink it will be christmas!! This meeting will be on Saturday the 4 of August. The location will be Scalares house at 161 North Avon road. Which is at the top end of Stanmore road. I think the usual time of 5pm will atill be fine. I look forward to seeing you all again.
  16. i think it is a special fish for a number of reasons. -I have not seen many discus that are a solid clean colour like this. Pretty much everything i have ever seen has had markings or shadings of different colour unlike this fish. - I just thought it was simply a fine example of a discus (the particular fish in discussion) - I have heard that the lighter colour discus's are harder to breed because the fry when first hatched will head towards the darkest object in the tank. And if mum and dad are pale white, well you work it out. I guess that would make for losses of fry and essentially a rarer colour variety.
  17. It looked a lot like this Very pretty fish. My hunch was it was a female. (often proven wrong though) With the price that i was suggested i hope it will possibly be bred from.
  18. Hmmm sound like you should come to a TT gathering. Pleanty of fish porn in the tanks Plus a growing network to borrow things untill you can get your own. Mr L
  19. You could always ask wilson to stay there untill they tell you who bought it..... Hang on wilson lives there!!! Mr L
  20. The lesson to be learnt here is; Every one stop assuming. If ANY doubts ask questions to find the answers then things like this wouldn't happen. Markoshark DID THE CORRECT THING by contacting MAF If it was done earlier this incident WOULDN'T have happened. Shops.... If you don't know what the fish actually is don't sell until YOU can guarantee what they are Fish books are easily available and we all know what the "usual" fish look like. We hobbiests can recognise an angelfish, bettas, catfish, and the "common" oddballs like knifefish, butterfly fish, puffers and a bunch of dang things i can't spell off the top of my head  So when something really new comes in like the eels or a danio that doesn't look like the normal ones i think the MAF 0800 will be running red hot.
  21. another possibly interesting bit of reading? http://www.rsnz.org/publish/nzjmfr/2004/044-lo.pdf
  22. there will probably be no answers to your questions about the goldfish and minnows because most of us probably don't actually have an answer. I would LOVE an answer. After 2 minutes of searching i found this article. http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/files/pests-diseases/animals/risk/draft-ornamental-fish-ira.pdf I have not read it yet but i think it looks to be extremely interesting. There may be an answer in there or at least part of one for you?
  23. Why would MAF need to tell us. It's all in the regulations they are acting under and if anyone has any questions then they are only a phone call away. Yes there are loop holes that get exploited all over the place. If people are having a go at MAF then why do these people keep fish. Mr L
