  1. I believe the best set up for fancy cory's is.... 3' tank Fine to medium rounded gravel(lots of it)(shallow at 1 end and 1/2 way up the tank at the other) A sponge or box filter is fine(and a really big bubbler at the shallow end, to be turned on when females are fat, combined with other stimuli) Spawning moss or spawning mops (at the shallow end)
  2. Hi Everyone, purplecatfish the correct names to your original question is Fundulopanchax gardneri(don't know what it really is so identify it as..)Blue , Aquarium strain And Fundulopanchax nigerianus (probably the gold variety) or it would have come with names like... p82 or jos plateau Nigerianus(was nigeriatum ) used to be part of the gardneri species but has now(and for some time)be given it's on species so gardneri nigerianus(or nigeriatum) is no longer a valid name. NOTE TO NZKA PEOPLE, please consult your species surveys for the correct names, as giving out old - out of date names only leads to confusion for new people. ( if you don't have a form please contact me) I can't state this enough... The only safe bet is to keep the Aphyosemion and Fundulopanchax in separate tank, with the exception of Fundulopanchax sjoestedti. An Aphyo. or Fundulo. species can be keep together(noteing aggression, dietry or predation concerns)with Aplocheilus, Austrolebias, Epiplatys, Jordanella, Nothobranchius and Pseudepiplatys species. However the 2 colour forms of Aplocheilus Lineatus will cross as will Notho. species. The problem with searching the web for pic's to ID your Killies is :- the Author may not have placed the strain(collection site) with the pic and many Gardneri and Nigerianus species/strains look alike. Or The information may be years old and names maybe out of date, assuming they were correct in the first place. The difference between the 2 species in your original question is very hard to explain but there is a visual difference, let alone a genetic one(look in the dorsal an anal fins) Stu NZKA Species controller
  3. Yes, Baking soda stabilisers the ph.
  4. These are the only one's on the allowed list.. Poecilia latipinna Poecilia reticulata Poecilia sphenops Poecilia velifera
  5. The general rule of thumb when hatching B/S is .... For every lt of water add 2 tablespoons of non iodised salt ( if you can get clean sea water easily, it's more convenient ) and no more then 1 teaspoon of B/S cyts.
  6. I really surprised your having such success with them Barrie as I had terrible trouble with them if the temp was above 25C. I used to breed them on peat, just scatter it in the tank add a trio or more depending on size of tank - feed water fleas or mozzy wrigglers only to cut down on pollution - after 10-14 days remove the adults drain peat in a net store in bag for another 14 days depending on temp but no more then 21 days, then re-wet and hay presto = fry!
  7. Temperatures really can be a problem with them as they do like it cool, even no heater if the house is heated. 18C is not a problem for them, I had some over winter once with no heater and they got COLD, but still bred in the spring. We have had a very hot summer this year, so maybe you should give them a miss until late autumn or even winter when tank temps are more controllable.
  8. I don't know enough about the tail forms to give you the best advice.
  9. Sure did, not the best but you can only work with what you have. I managed to pick up some wild female guppies for you too, just conditioning them to our water - taking it slow as the conditions are so different.
  10. May be Barrie you should boil some, place it in a fresh tank( or a container ) > do the same with what you usually do for a week and test the Ph and compare the 2. Alanmin, Barrie and I had sent emails back and forth a week or 2 before you posted that, so I didn't comment as it is quite a valid method. In Asian country's they also use tea bags to reduce stress from the overly hot days. So for the A. australe I would think it an excellent idea( could try it with striatum too ), maybe throw in an extra spawning mop or 2 as the peat is a spawning medium. Good thinking Alanmin, I think I will try that with my striatum and see if I can get more eggs, although I'm not doing to bad with them
  11. Kyle, I don't think the korthausae we have comes from the island off Tanzania that we can not type due to automatic editing of band words on this sit. But as we don't know for sure, we can not call it the suspected strain. Many of the rain forest killies we keep are used to acidic tannins( from leaves ) in their natural waters, maybe the ph does go up during the wet season, so a neutral Ph is better for them to breed in. But the Notho's from mainland Africa can have so much crap in there pools I would expect ( but don't know, although as I type I recall an article on collecting N.Eggersi where the ph was very low compared to a near by river ) the water would get very acidic. You have plenty of experience Barrie and have proved it, who are you kidding  Alanmin is right though, ""the same thing does not always work"" I wonder Barrie if the way you wet your peat compared to others gives you a lower then normal Ph for water with a pot of peat in it?
  12. Depending how large you want to grow them, food, how many you have, water conditions etc 5-6 months to full grown adult fully finned males. Most sell them younger then this.
  13. When does tank # 100 arrive mumzy50 Good luck with the gouramis :bounce:, I know you really love them.
  14. That's what I want to do DantezGirl, a 900x450x300mm planted tank full of Endlers I have breed. And if cesarz achieves what he is planing WOW is all I can say.
  15. Every fish is a little different, but yes same import. Dixon1990, the wild guppies cesaerz has pictured are just that from the wild, and are very very small due to decades of inbreeding.
  16. Missed your point Alanmin, to true.
  17. I pick up a blonde Endler 2 days ago and plan to do just that Keri Anna.
  18. Red eyed bristlenose are known as Albino bristlenose, Not GBA's. As Dixon1990 they are different species don't let them Xbreed.
  19. The problem with the information Kylefish put up is it's OLD, not that old is no good, but..... Most experienced fish keepers will know about gill shock(goes by other names) page 25 is a perfect example of this > do it at your peril > well your fishes peril!!. Have we not heard lots of peoples fish spawning just after a big water change >> slight drop in temp with a change in water chemistry, maybe PH too ??? Alanmin, I would like to point out that the F. Nigerianus (all it's morphs and populations > same apply's to gardneri and all it's morphs and populations)are much more prolific and seem to have harder casings on their eggs then the A. australe are and do. So to explain the poor result of the Australe on conditions once changing things and having success with a F. nigerianus is not right > sorry Especially when I consider your A. australe spawning set up to just right!!! It's strange that Australe like it cool as well isn't it !>?? P.s I know I can be blunt - please forgive me, I'm not having a go at anyone > Barrie and Kylefish are friends. I don't really know Alanmin > However I do know you are an asset to the club and becoming even more so as we are starting to get a swell of interest in killies from Christchurch and you are in the right place to help them with your experience!, you are the third longest member of the club( David just rejoined ) - that specks for it's self.
  20. You have to get a CHECK UP to join the NZKA, You must prove your completely nuts!! From NZKA 215 Species Controller
  21. The idea is great but I have to say the revue that ryanjury put up, as to bits falling off is true. And If you breed your betta successfully the hatch and feeder will not supply enough bbs for your fry past the first week or 2 on bbs, you will have to switch to bottle hatching to get enough.
  22. It sounds wet and muddy >>> great
  23. You fool AMAZONIAN, Cesarz is NZKA aswell
  24. Check the shops in CHCH next time your down that way, they had some a little while back. Or you can wait for your fallow NZKA members to breed them up.
  25. I've just read this thread and would have loved to come, there's a stream close to were I live when check 10 years a go was full of the most colourful bullies, big red one's and small blue one's( think there called blue gills or something like that). At these time I really hate my job, one a penny two a penny HOT X BUNS So I wouldn't have been able to go anyway. Have a good experience guy's and girl's, let us know how you got on. If you want to know where the stream is Andrew just pop in next time your in town. It would give me an excuse to take my waders for a walk outside of whitebait season.
