  1. I haven't been in there for a while - no need really. Hutt Pets used to be the PLACE TO GO when visiting Wellington years and years ago, but due to a number of reasons It's rep fell a way big time. However it has been improving a lot over the past few years. But even then I've had problems, mainly things like part time staff not knowing what they're doing - chasing fish around the tank in vain effort to catch them. I fixed that one real fast - quit bluntly!, I then offered to show them the correct way to prove my point - Hopefully it worked but I never saw that employee again. I know 2 of the main guys there and they're hobbyists just like us. They know there stuff and are just the type of people we would want to run a fish shop..... RESPONSIBLE, not just after a quick sale and stuff the consequences!
  2. No, but a better pic would be nice.
  3. How successful have you been raising your fighters Cam?
  4. That's what I was thinking too Warren. It sounds like a classic case, but no bristlenose on the list??
  5. Nothobranchius are very fast growing as you will know, egg to breeding size in 6 - 7 weeks if you feed them right.
  6. Congratulations mumzy50. I must come around and see all your babies.
  7. Cam, Why do you and your Mother want to breed fish? Fun? Interesting? Or You want to make it the corner stone of your hobby of Keeping tropical fish?
  8. Here's some images. I hope they give you some ideas, not although I use expensive stainless steel mesh the mouldings also fit standard(5mm) tank glass. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y187/s ... mall-1.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y187/s ... 3Small.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y187/s ... sSmall.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y187/s ... 1Small.jpg
  9. I'll take one tomorrow. As far as the filter, the dividers may prevent good water flow depending on size and number of perforations, when dividing tanks like this I use stainless steel mesh however it isn't cheep but very effective. What I would recommend, if you can is have the filter down one end and the out follow to it at the other. You can do this with some of the sponge filters on the market( will have to extend the out flow pipe ) or make one yourself.
  10. If SBD was wanting different strains in the same tank separated by dividers with holes in them - that would work just fine. You can also use pvc bathroom mouldings in steed of the tube if you like things a little more tidy. If you need a pic I can take one.

The Male cleans his cave before spawning.

    Breeding Ideas.

Cam you could always go down to a garden centre and pick up a cheep terracotta pot 150 or 200mm wide, chip at the lip until its 3/4 the width of you male (including the pectoral fins), turn it upside down and you will have the perfect cave.
  13. I breed the pearl G's in between 200 and 250mm of water in a 220x600mm tank. Defiantly use a bare bottom tank and hope you are not overly successfull. As they are very prolific. Don't forget they are softer bodied then other Gouramis so when you move the fry to bigger quarters do not be tempted to net too many in one hit you may damage them.
  14. Yeah I did find that a bit strange as the gold hi-fin male was the biggest boy in the tank. Good luck
  15. It cost me around the $30.00 mark of the top of my head from Bunnings.
  16. Wow, was that the same female that looked like it was going to spawn with the blue male when I came around Ryan?
  17. My 2 cents worth. I used to have the same problems, no matter what I tried - all the tricks I knew of. I only started to have lots of success when I got an oiled glass cutter similar to what the pro's use, since then I have had very few failed cuts and would NEVER again consider using any other type of cutter!.
  18. Boil the small amount you will need and discard the water, give the peat a rinse and you will have removed any problems.
  19. I can see several things not quit right with your set up. You must use 100% rain water, the calcium and magnesium levels in your water must be next to - if not zero. The tank needs to be completely covered(blacked out) for 2 reasons, 1, cardinals can be flighty and need the darkness to settle down. 2, the eggs which should be laid on the second or third morning are light sensitive, if the tank is not very dark all the time, the eggs will die. The hight above the fish appears to be to deep, they only need it to be shallow around 150-180mm deep. The author of that article used a very basic set up, tanks were 200x600x200mm. 100% rain water similar to yours Boiled garden peat on the bottom. To help condition the water, calm the adults and to trap the eggs. Spawning mops or spawning moss were the spawning sites(plants were/are not required). Once the adults were place in the tank it was completely blacked out until they had spawned (48-72 hours), the adults were removed tank left covered until fry were free swimming(as per article).

    is it true

Yes Caryl, all Fundulopanchax were once called Aphyosemions. Scheeli have been here for years and years, I once had a 3' planted tank with 30 adult pairs. They were lost in the North island, but I had sent some to the Dunner's a few years ago and received late last year some stock back from there and sent some eggs to a few key NZKA breeders. I've also sold them on T/M before, but not lately
  23. Hi Evil Species police again  There are to my knowledge No Cynolebias species in the country. The Nigripinnis are Austrolebias > Austrolebias Nigripinnis Stu NZKA Species Controller 215
