    Striatum

I wonder if it's too hot for them?

    Striatum

I always found them low producers, even the original breeding stock. Some days I'll collect 10 eggs from my breeding group( 1 male 6 females) most days non = NOT EVEN 1 DEAD EGG. I have 11 fry( EDIT 2 just hatched ) and collected 3 eggs today, even though the group love to hide under the 3 full length mops I have bunched together in their tank. Go figger >> what are they doing under there  cause it ain't spawning. I was feeding them lots of mozzy wrigglers at one stage( and I do mean LOTS ), It made no differance, same results as a good quality flake :-?

danilada you can also come and see what your missing out on in my fish room. Not that I have lots of killies right now only a few hundred babies. I'm trying to not get to carried away as it's easy to do. Welcome Matthew 310 From NZKA 215 Species Controller P.s I am conducting the NZKA species survey right now. If you would like to participate PM me for details.
  5. As above but the water should be used tank water. You can also use the liquid on micro worm cultures, it contains yeast which the fry can eat and baby micro worms that they maybe able to eat. I don't have micro worms at present but someone here will, if you don't already have them.

  9. Ok, some one alerted me to this thread, I've read it and I will respond... First of, for members that don't know me I breed some Apisto.'s but my main love is killifish. X breeding of either type is something I would NEVER agree with. I am very much of the opinion of keeping species in there natural type - even the same species from different locations. Although not defending anyone the 2 fish in question do look alike, are they the same species - possibly - possibly not. Many Apisto.'s look alike but when examined by Ichthyologists they are found to be quit different. Has any one Googled Apistogramma huallaga???, you wont find it, as it does not exist - why - well quite simple, huallaga is a river = Rio Huallaga. Apistogramma huallaga is an Apisto. from the river Huallaga!!. So is X breeding possible with no change to the offspring from the Parents, don't know. What I do know is it is something I would discourage(as above). By the way the species called Apisto. Eunotus has been looked at by Apisto. experts in the States and it has been decided they are not Apistogramma Eunotus, rather Apisto. cf Eunotus = a species that looks very much like Apisto. Eunotus but is not, this information was past on. So is Apistogramma huallaga a species with unto it's self(as yet unidentified) or Apisto. Eunotus from the Rio Huallaga or Apisto. cf Eunotus from the Rio Huallaga. ?? Xbreeding, I wonder WHY it is something I discourage ??.

    Salt

1 teaspoon per gallon (4-5lts) is correct for preventing Oodinium. And double that when treating Oodinium on Killies, particularly Notho's and alike annuals. Great that they fell better, just to be on the safe side keep a close eye on them for another 10 days.
  11. caserole

    Salt

Normal dose to have with Notho's is 1tsp per 4 to 5lts (roughly 1 gallon). If they have Ich or velvet, double the dose in conjunction with blue and 50% daily water changes ( keep the tank as dark as practical if velvet).
  12. I think that's a real bargin That will work, but if the fish are feed properly they will produce eggs constantly. Sound familiar Talk to the seller of the killies as he is a member or pm Wok
  13. It really depends on what species your after cichlid7. A trio of Nothobranchius species will be quite happy living and spawning in a 300x200x200mm tank = 12lt. A pair (trio of a smaller species like striatum) Aphyosemion's will happy living and breed in a 12lt tank Fundulopanchax (with the exception of sjoestedti) will breed fine in a 12lt tank but a bit bigger for keeping them, you don't want to stunt your fish from growing to there full size. Fundulopanchax sjoestedti and Aplocheilus lineatus need a 40-50lt tank (300x600x300mm) as they can grow much larger then the above. Hope that helps NZKA Species controller
  14. This is a bad pic of one my snow albino's, will try and get a pic of the full platinum albino's but I'm finding it hard to avoid the reflections off the platinum sides.
  15. When I say baby bristle nose I mean just that, they have just absorbed their yoke sack > very small, just 2 or 3 of them. I don't feed the b/n at all - they just eat the left over brine shrimp , so any mess they may make is less and clearer then rotting b/s, did I mention I have a home made little sponge filter in the tank as well.
  16. this site has a programme stopping me from spelling the islands name.
  17. 24C is considered the correct temp for Notho's. However Korthausae comes from the island of >M a f i a < off the coast of Tanzania which would probably have cooling coastal breezes, there for a temp between 20 and 24C should be fine.
  18. Quit a few. 2 species I have that are uncommon here:- Apistogramma sp. maulbruter and Apisto. baenschi aka inka 50
  19. I use baby bristle nose to keep the bottom of my fry tanks clean it works well. I've use mesh breeding traps for years, you can see precisely when your fish have spawned and when they have hatched.
  20. I wouldn't necessarily remove the gravel. Yes what Barrie said is correct however this can work to your advantage for more egg collection. Just carefully remove the mess collected with the eggs as the gravel is syphoned through a net and add them to the pot of peat. Nothobranchius korthausae is a prolific species, 100's of eggs can be collected with this method.
  21. Sounds good SpidersWeb, I would encourage you to leave the breeders in the tank up to 10 days though, that gives the fish a few days to settle down and get on with spawning. Although in saying that I bought a pair of neon dwarf rainbows 4 days ago and started collecting eggs the next day - so who knows.
  22. 1 of the problems with using a tank to large is the fry have to work harder to find food, unless you put heaps(to much)food in. Hatching bbs in 1lt of water. Add air tube( an air stone is not need ) to keep cysts moving with 2 table spoons (proper measuring spoon)of salt, @25C most should hatch in around 20-24hs. 1 teaspoon of baking soda can also be added to keep the water alkaline. Place no more then 1 teaspoon of b/s in hatcher( if using NZ b/s 1/2 teaspoon) Use or freeze with in 6hours of hatching. Start with a fresh water mix every hatch. Microworms are a good food and black widow fry can eat them from f/swim stage but the fry will never achieve the same growth that they would on bbs.
  23. Stu just read this post and scratches his head and laughed. :-? Come on guy's where's the knowledge on how to breed tetra's. best breeding tank size is 300x600x300, not to small - nor to large. Black widow's should look like adults in 4-6 weeks. They take bbs from the time they are free swimming. If your fry are not growing rapidly it's because you are not giving them enough suitable food. There may be 3 starter reasons you had a low fry count. 1, Your water may be a little to hard. 2, old eggs in female, best to breed them chuck the spawn, condition female and spawn again once full of eggs - in 2 weeks. 3, First spawns of any fish are usually poor or a complete failure, but not always. I pick reason 2, but 1 may be a factor. Hatching bbs is a piece of cake I hatch heaps daily. What do you do Dixon1990 to hatch your shrimp, maybe we can sort it out??.
  24. Killies :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: Because killies are less hassle then Betta's, the fry are much easier to raise as they take baby brine shrimp from the get go unlike betta's.
