  1. Most would have been smuggled. NZ biggest bird smuggler also keeps reptiles. Parrot eggs/Reptile eggs. Most Ozzie parrots that are smuggled into NZ aren’t for the NZ market they are to be re exported I would think the same is true for Reptiles. A very old parrot breeder told me that there’s at least one load of egg’s arriving a week into NZ. All that MAF/DOC etc is doing is putting the price up and making a profit for the smugglers, the only ones that lose out are the one's who keep to the rules. If you don't know how prohibition works look at how the Mafia got started in the states or how the gangs make heaps out of weed. Never going to work. The chance is that if if hasn't been smuggle the parents would've. If you’ve got enough cash I’m sure you could buy a snake.
  2. Apistos and Discus. Great to see more post on here about breeding Apisto's so should see more of them available which would be great. The only other fish I breed are Catfish from SA and Guppies but you can't really say I breed them more that they don't all get eaten.
  3. If you've fallen for fish don't get parrot's it's even harder to stop. I think being animal lovers we just want to give them all a good home. Don't know what the market like for convicts over their but here you find it hard to rehome them so before you put the work in see if you'll be able to sell them.
  4. I got about 20 10-15mm long $3.00 each.

    Fish compatabity

Mostly in caves and Ive found them to be great with the babies, I find this the best part watching dad try and keep the two girls happy. Most are easy to keep and breed the harder ones to look after are hard to find so you wont really have to worry about that to much.

Discus but need to know who big your tank is. If you have a couple of breeding Apisto's in your tank theres always lots going on.

The blue/gold Rams are such nice fish but just don't last. I've got a pair that I have spent a lot of time on and hopefully will breed shortly, I've seen some Blues on trademe that where bred here so they could be an option.

    Fish compatabity

I would have to say that Blue/Gold Rams are the hardest fish to keep alive that I've had.
  9. Best would be to find fish that are suitable to the water, if the water requires more than coral sand or peat to change it it starts getting hard on you when doing water changes and the fish.

Depends on the tank but 1 male and 2 females is a good number. Males can grow to about 5cm but would say that this was a big one. Cockatoos are the nicest Apisto's but there are other nice ones as well so best to have a good look at the net to see what available. Ask on here what people are selling/breeding in your area as the lower NI has a few people breeding Dwarf Cichlids. I've found Rams to be nice fish but they are hard to keep live. I've had a pair of Blue Rams for about a year now and had a couple of times when they looked like they where going fins up but managed to bring them back. The Bolivian Rams aren't much better but once they have settle they seem to last longer. I breed Apisto Borilli and Bolivian Rams and have 3 other kind of Apisto's that I'm fatten up as well as the blue rams which I must find a tank for. I like Dwarf Cichlids if you couldn't guess.http://images.google.com/images?svnum=1 ... es&spell=1 http://images.google.com/images?svnum=1 ... ii&spell=1

They'll be fine, they'll stand up for themselves but won't go out of therir way to get some one. I've got Apisto's with Guppies (with babies), Neons, Corys, Kuili's, Discus, Rams, Whiptails alsorts. Apisto's are way under rated and make a good addition to most tanks.
  12. Sand is just soo much better than stones it's hard to start. I keep Discus and feed beef heart but only do a 50% water change weekly and no syphone the bottom at all. I just make sure that there are enough Corys to turn the top layer of sand over and your plants will grow better as well.

Cockatoo Apistogrammes or any apisto's. Rams seem to fall over unless you can get some that have been breed here.
  14. You can swap every thing over now. Your current filter is doing the job the only difference is the outside walls have changed (forget the stones use sand).

    Discus Trouble

    White worms are the best.
  16. Every thing apart from Discus tanks are unpluged.
  17. I've treated a Blue Ram that had a large mass at the base of its dorsal which I didn't give any hope but in the end it worked out great. I tried lots of different things but this is what worked. Get some PP (chemist) make up a solution of a couple of crystals of PP and a small amount of water and mix. Catch fish remove from tank, if mass is open try to remove infected tissue with craft knife (puss) then drop a small amount of solution on sore wait a short time and return to tank. Repeat as many times as required. This will in effect burn the sore/infection so there will be some time for this to heal.

    whiptails

Photos of Whiptails you must be kidding, I found it hard enough to get photos of Discus let alone catfish. I had a look on Panetcat fish for LG6 and I think that these are the seem as what we've got. I'm looking at getting the Pinoccio and white whiptails from NZDiscus so if your keen I'm happy for them to come down in one lot. BK
  19. Apistogrammes are great to breed, always funny seeing the male try and look after a couple of females. Discus are also great to breed with the fry eating of the sides of the parents.
