    Discus

Hows the discus going. Should be showing good colours now.
  4. Discus Trace elements is also a option, got mine from Blacks pets Opawa rd chch. Use peat as well but seem to get better colour when using this. Using weekly at 1/2 dose seems fine.
  5. Discus aren't as hard as some people make out. Jack Wattle books and you could try Phil Collins at NZDiscusman header on some of these pagers for info and fish. BK
  6. Mix looking good but have heard that Black widow tetras are nippers? Would like to put them in with some of mine but haven't keeped them b4 so don't know what they are like. I'ld put some Corys in there as well. try Phil collins NZDiscusman for more info and good prices.

    adding more gravel

I've heard that Goldfish are full of Disease and can cause lots of problems at the higher temps. Would've boiled the stones myself. Currently cleaning out two old snail tanks but can't find a pot big enough. Any one with a better idea how to do this. They will be for my Discus as well.
  8. Discus are Kings and go well with Tetras and Rams. Don't now what of the fish you are moving to your new tank so only what I like. Weelky water changes would be enough with say 3 Discus and heap of tetras plus a pair of Rams, May be the Plec if he doesn't try cleaning the Discus. The Barbs, Eel and Clown's could be a problem but may not be. Also the Keyholes and Cockatoos would be fine with them.
  9. Jack knows best but he's talking top notch fish for breeding. If it works in your tank it works don't change something you are happy with because of what you've read. I have my Discus by themselves for breeding but a couple of small ones that I'm not interested in breeding are going to go in with a pair of Angles which Jack also says shouldn't be done.
  10. Feeding Discus Tetra Bits is a good option. Made for larger fish and doesn't break down so quickly as they can be slow to start and only twice a day. Try some Blue Rams and some Panda Cory's to help clean the bottom and are great fish as well. Have both of these in my tank with Discus.
  11. Could be a runt for any number of reason and some of them have nothing to do with u. I have one myself, he stopped growing when the others started pairing up. There is almost nothing you can do, Some people say move them to another tank to feed them up but your's is eating. If he does have/show any signs of diseases just see what happens. The other thing that you could try is worming them.
  12. try Panda Corys they are so much more active and look better. How about a Pair of Rams as well.
  13. Both tall and long and three to start with and reduce this down to two if they pair. I had two pairs in a 220 ltr (3') tank and it wasn't big enough from them migth be able to get away with 4-5 in 4' tank.

    Mad Discus

Looking a bit better today. Treated for bacteria. They're coming to say hi when I go in the room again.

    Mad Discus

The story starts about 2 weeks ago. Took some potted plants out of my 3' foot tank (220 ltr) leaving 3 potted plants (swords) and 2 egg cones as well as 2 pairs of 5'' Discus. Well after this I cleaned sides and bottom of tank (bear bottom) and did daily 10% water change. Came back into the room some time later and one of the Discus had gotten stuck on top of the water return out let. Only half covered in water so freed him but he had wounds around head area notting to deep. He then seemed to be unhappy with tank. Swimming from one end to the other and doing really tigth turns like he was pissed with his tail. This continued to ligths out. Next day he was floating. I was gutted. Tested water every thing read 0 and ph of 7.0-7.2. Had been in tank for 4 months with same water condition but with more fish that I transfer 1-2 weeks before this. So took it as a lesson and change water return. Took the female out & put in growing on tank and she's ok. This leaves the other pair which have been a little shy but nothing to worrying untill yesterday when I came home one of them was hiding behind the pump (tank is AR 980 all in one with filter on top) colour not looking good but breathing ok. Did 20% water change and fish look a bit happy but this one is doing the back and forth and the tigth turns LIKE THE ONE THAT PASSED AWAY 2 WEEKS AGO. Now this has me thinking that they have worms "HIH" and talking to the LFS they think the same. Water is al good,28-30 degrees, have others breeding in same water condition. Feed Tetra bits in morning and beef in afternoon and then do 10% water change daily. There are no signs of "HIH" apart from doing the mad swimming. To me every thing seems ok only thing that i can think of is "HIH" or they may not like were the tank is. Its in the spare room sitting about 500 off the ground they seem to get a bit of a frigth now and then but nothing that worrys me to much but then this is my second fish not looking good. I have Metronidazola at home, should I treat them for "HIH" or I could move them into the breeding tanks I've set up in the sleepout but don't want to put them under any more stress. Can't under stand please help. Will have to do some thing tonight? Again water looks all good.
  16. Na 3 is on the test bottle I'll check tonight. I've 100ltr of peat if you want some no charge.
  17. Can be total heart but I'ld put some of there usually food in the mix that way they will take it better. Some times new food will be left if they don't know its food.
  18. Hi Rory, give me a call I have the new tanks going if they need a temp home. Do water change Na could have been the problem I had with mine and I've cut down my feeding. You've seen my 3 in a mixxed tank feed bits and flake so this shouldn't be a problem. Try some peat and water change is only thing i could say. 0274 326 199..
  19. So if LFS stop stocking the importer is going to need more space, more workers and will most likley carry higher stocks just to supply smaller orders. This migth have the opporsite effect that you expect. In my job we supply Placemakers, if we supplied the public our returns would be higher but so would our cost and instead of focusing on the main business would have to cover every thing. In the long run I don't think it would make since. As for having a larger range wouldn't you aim to stock the 50% of lines that give u 90% of sales rather than doulbe your stock to increase sales by 10%. Lots more points behind this than just our veiw as "THE PURCHASER'. Sound good to us but what about the supply chain.

    ANGELS AND DISCUS

The Angels were just funny to see. The male thought that the other fish were eating them so would go nuts at the others. The Discus really shocked me, interesting that the eggs didn't go off. Will keep u updated but they have been eating them when they hatch so will have to wait and see. Had a great day today, fish are breeding, my dog doesn't have a Brain tumor like the vet thought and the paper want's to do an artical on my girlfriend taking are Parrot every where with her. I've been so down about my dog for the last week and now I couldn't wish for better.

    ANGELS AND DISCUS

Notice a couple of funny things the last few days. Last nigth my Angels had wiggles hatch the male picked these up 3 at a time and placed them on another leaf then the female came along picked them up and put them back on the first leaf. I'ld cleaned this tank out so I can sort out my plantings and lay out and only left 4 Angels and 5 Neons in it. Second interesting fact Don't hold me to this but I think I saw this happen. So Discus female laid eggs, male close by. Eggs stayed almost clean untill following day when "I think I saw" him make a pash over them to fertilize. A couple of minutes after this they turned a darker colour and this morning u can see the little black dot in the middle. Has any one else seen/ heard about this happening.

    PVC Pipe

You'r on the case. Cheers will rest easy now knowing the work I did last nigth is good to go.

    PVC Pipe

Read last nigth in a British mag about setting up sumps that some PVC pipe has a anti-algae additive. Any one heard of this b4 or had problems using this kind of product. I'll ring Marley today so will keep u posted.

    Formalin

Thanks for your replys. Interesting the points made about handling, you wouldv'e thought that they would have had some kind of warning on it.

    Formalin

Have read that all fish have parasites, its only when they are stressed that it becomes a problem. So with them being Discus I think I'll treat just the one. Agree with your comments re filter, other tanks-nets etc. Only treat when fish show signs of problems or as you pointed out you kill all the good bugs as well.
