    Ram Swollen Head

I've had good result from using Arcaflavine (sp) on cotton mouth, fin rot but don't know what this is. could it be Hole in the Head? Would love to find a Blue Ram in CHCH but they all seem to be the plain brown kind. Good luke.

    Gromi-Scale fungus

Hi all, A couple of my Gromi's have something on there scales. They are Dwarf's, blue head and orange, they are in with small tetras, Cory's, Ram, Discus and a couple of Sunset & Cobalt Gromi's. They have raised scales that then look to have some white fluff in patches as well but only if you look hard. Its been like this for about a week maybe 2 by the time i noticed. They're apart from this in great shape, Feeding well/playing just like normal. Is this some kind of fungus? Could I use Aricaflanve. One of these guy's had cotton mouth about 4-3 weeks ago that I treated with Furan 2 (sp).

Just because me can see a reason for it to continue does mean that it won't become a polictical issue and then it comes down to votes and not science. Sorry about spelling but try to get work done b4 wekend.

One day (i think within 5 years) you won't be able to bring in anything that hasn't been farm rised. It's just a matter of time with the goverment we've got. and really it's not a good look for the reefs. Does any of the importers/agents put any money into reef restortion. if not if could be even sooner. Lets just take anything out of the sea and then it would be real cheap wouldn't that be great for people who like to buy at the lowest price. Bring the average price down just means that the reefs won't last as long and that farm rised fags/fish can't compete but hay the price was real low so every one can have a tank and it doesn't matter if they die cause i can get another one real cheap. Cheap cheap cheap does matter cause I can get it real cheap.

    Breeding tanks

Second pair spored (sp) last night and then dined in. I have them in a AR980 with the curved front glass, this would make them seem smaller wouldn't it.

Cost-value-price aren't the same thing. Support the shops that support you. Think of it this way, You order your fish in and pre pay for it. Next day you go down to pick it up but because the airpoint is frog in its been off loaded somewhere else and will be truck the rest of the way. Truck got held up in transit so got to store after it had been shut for the day. Parcel left in truck overnigth delivery next day for you to pick up. One cold dead fish, either you take the lose or the shop. Price was cheaper but rick is greater. I'm not saying that this is wrong but the local shop down the road stocking product do preform a service so don't write them of because it cost them to stock product 4 u.

    Breeding tanks

Last night one pair laid eyes and then the male eat them. I think there was a bit much going on in the tank as he was keeping all the other away but when he went over to the female and eggs he starting eat them and she did then as well. At the other end of the tank I think I have another pair with them shaking/waving at each other and chaseing the others away. will try posting tanks pic's in members tanks area now.

    Breeding tanks

yes I understand that there could be a problem with syphoning and yes will draw of any uneaten food but still would like to have sump as I'm a sales rep and can't allways be there so even with my partner doing this would like 3rd option if she doesn't under stand what or why she is doing this task. So if we have out let at bottom of tank and pipe from this returns to top of tank(required water level and then falls this would mean that if pump falls water won't reach high point in pipe so won't have problem. With comment of sucking air allout, may drill hole in top off top bend so is only over flow and no syphon. Understand that my main problem will be syphoning and using sump so water is as clean as can be. What do the pro do when they have 100 tanks and are running sumps. Have seen photos of this in the book "Discus for the perfectionist" by J Wattle. Thanks for the reply and have change added something to plan so comments are taken on broad. Will try and draw up plan to scan so can show u all.

    Breeding tanks

Thanks for replys. Will have floss sitting on top of bio balls and out let hole in tank will be at bottom to colect waste but will bring pipe up to about 1-inch below top of tank so it works like an over flow but with out let at bottom. Hard to explain but pipe will travel up from hole and then down to sump (25mm PVC). What are your throughs re size of fish I didn;t think they would breed at this size. The larger fish of the pair has grow a lot over the last couple of weeks and I think they are still all growing, so do they start breeding before they reach full size. These are the first Discus I've keeped so size vs breeding I'm not sure of. Could they just be playing around or dry humping behind the bike sheds?

    Breeding tanks

Morning good people. Working out how to set up my fish room starting with breeding tanks for Discus. My plan is 3 tanks 600x400x400 with one sump of about 20-30ltr full of bio balls and topped of with floss. Holes for out feed to be in bottom of tank side, as close to bottom as possible with pipe running up to top of tank and then back down so it acts as over flow and not just drain hole. Tanks will be bear bottom with water changes after feeding. My question is do I need to have sponge filters as well. Inlet for sump will be bar covered in floss to stop babies being sucked in and return will be spray bar. Hope to turn water over 3x hour. This is the frist time setting up Discus breeding so if you can see any problems please reply. Will have to get on with this as have been caught out last night with what I though were two Red Truqs flashing and dancing (colour changes and fins waving) around each other. They have allso started cleaning the intake for the filter. Fish aren't that big around 4inch tip to base i thought that I'ld have 6 months to sort this out. I think I've only had the fish about 2 months, got them of "THE NZ DISCUSMAN" who has a banner on this site. Will get cam from work so I can post pic's.

    Discus-Water hardness

Just reading about water hardness and compareing it to CHCH water as now they have settled in I'll slowly match tank water with tap water. Reduced pH has been done with peat (reduced ph previous to receiving fish with buffer once fish were added have used peat) and only other chems used is cycle and the Trace elements which is a dose of 10mlr a week. With 10-20% water change daily I think it well take any where between 1-2 weeks to do this. Once pH is around 7 I'll add a small bag of peat. Oh no meds in tank as fin damage is gone. This well leave me with maintenance program of 3 feeds daliy with excess removed, 10-20% water canges due to food removely and addation of cycle and trace elements weekly as well as peat.
  15. Copy of e-mail sent to supplier of my Discus My question to you is should I increase the hardness as it reads KN10 and GN40. Have just got "Discus trace elements" solution which I'll add tonight but this won't change the hardness much. pH is 6.3 and starting to bring it up to local water of 7.4. Lots of plants in tank and use peat when pH gets up to 7.0. Currently changing about 10-20% water daily. What should I add if you recommend increasing Hardness and to what level? P.S feeding Beef heart 2x daily and tetra bits 1x daily, this is changing to Beef heart 1xdaily and tetra bits 2x daily this week.
  16. Nothing wrong with fish it just seems that the males sit on the bottom some times having a rest. Not concerned as they are fine the rest of the time chasing the females around and eating well. Just thought I'ld mention it and from "livebearer breeded" reply seems to be common..
  17. Mine seem to sit on the bottom in the breeding tank. Is this normal, feeding time and they're all action..Been like this for say a month and they are still shooting them out. Seems to be the males mostly.
  18. Sorted. out with the carbon in with the noodles and floss. I like the tanins as well 1/2 the reason the peat is in the first tank.

    Cleaning Carbon

Cheers thinking about removing this from my filters. Looks like I will. Sure I read somewhere that it could be cleaned/boiled. I don't know.
  20. Just thinking it Asia breeders use no filters just water changers. they are just removing food and waste just like floss and noodles. Thinking out load.
  21. Would add more noodles as I see this as the most important part of filter. Maybe just keep one bag of carbon. Thanks for reply as didn't really know what purpose carbon did in filter but understand now that they remove small particals from water. What is best way of cleaning carbon Wash/throw away. What dose cardon remove? I now meds what else that can't be removed by anything else. If floss removes larde particals and noodles break down waste what is left. Best to ask stupid ? than never find out.
  22. What are peoples thoughs on using Carbon in there filters that service tanks with Discus in them. I have "tank one", bare bottom, 10 potted plants, trickle filter-noodles-floss-peat and two sponge filters. Feed beef heart 3x daily with 10% water change after each feed (220 ltr tank). 9 4inch discus and 5 1inch discus. All doing nicely with little ones starting to colour on lower fins. Happy with this set up. "tank two" 220ltr,fluval 403, UGF in-reverse(tank 1.0m tall) keeps food of bottom(mostly) and lets fish ate with out losing 1/2 on bottom, many plants, 3 cory cat, 5 dwarf Gromi's, 3 1inch Discus and about 30 small tetras(blacks, Rummy's etc). Fluval has floss, carbon and noodles. Thinking about replacing carbon with more floss. 30% water change weekly. "tank three" 160ltr trickle filter-floss-carbon-noodles. 2x 3 spot Gromi's, 5inch Pleco, Red tail,6x Angles(aveg 50cent size), 2x Kulis, 12xtetras, 4 guppies and many plants that are getting eaten? pleco/Redtail? will add CO2 unit tonight. As above thinking of replaceing carbon with floss.30% water change weekly. Two other tanks for Guppies and Betta's that will stay as is. From CHCH so water good apart from ph around 7.4 but tanks at about 6.6-6.8. Haven't change carbon for about 2 month's so not getting anything from this any way. WILL I LOSE ANYTHING REPLACING CARBON WITH FLOSS re filtting preformance. Sorry about spelling (timber worker on computter at work not a good looks with boss walking behind me every 30mins)
  23. Sump it. Heaps more ltr per hour at cheaper rate and I think easyer to clean as well.
