Alan this is pretty much ture for these fish. Would love to get more but don't think its worth the hassle. These were in with Discus, Rams and Tetras and the only problem I had was the Fungus sprend to one of the Discus that require some Aquflivane(sp) to clean it up and was rigth as rain. Would love to here if someone is breeding them and what % are raised, but still would come from the Asian fish farms in the long run.

I lost all 4 of mine to Dropsy but first I noticed skin problems ie fungus. I read alot about these drawfs gromi's and they seem to be prone to disease due to poor breeding. Sorry couldn't help and I'm not saying it's dropsy either but could be completely out of your hands.

Setting up a Discus breeding room with 6 tanks(600x400x400) for pairs that will run with a 70ltr sump and a couple of growing on tanks that are stand alone. What would be a good medium, noodles,bio balls,stones etc. Will also have filter floss and peat in there but just would like to known what people recomend for biological filtration. Noodles will end up being dear with 10ltrs worth about $45.00. Will use a 1000 ltr pump. Tanks when they a built will use an over flow system drawing from the bottom of the tanks. If there not much difference in price would use best product available, price not every thing but it does count.

But hard and soft and clowns would be my aim. Tank size would be no smaller than 4' and no bigger than 8' depth and heigth would be somewhere between 1.5' and 2'. Not many details but this is probably a year away as I'm currently setting up to breed Discus and Tetras in my fish room so I can move all but 2 tanks out of the house. This would mean that I could keep a reef tank in the spare bedroom. Things that I'ld need that I don't use on my freash water tanks ie skimmer, HM ligthing, pumps for water movement etc. That do u use in your sumps? noodles, bio balls, M/Mud. Just asking at the moment wouldn't be starting for 12 months and the Rep from Southern Petware has offer to help me out setting up. Just asking what is required that I don't already do. Not to much detail re chemistry just what i need to set up a tank. I've be reading heaps and will continue to do so, so by the time my wife lets we get it started I'ld have some idea of whats what.

Hi guy's, haven't started yet but just asking ? so when i do i know what to do. 1, Do u use NSW and if so were do u colect if from. 2 what do u use in your sumps, noodles, mud, bio balls? What do you need that is different than freashwater set up ie skimmer, MH ligthing, pumps to move the water round etc.

Nice fish. I had 2 as well as 2 male sunset's but they are no longer. All got Dropsy. I've read that they are prone to this and other internal problems. The Discus and Rams in the same tank were fine as well as the Tetras and Cory's . Not going to get any more of these as they may look great but not willing to risk the rest of the tank.

Not Wellington but If you have time try the one's in CHCH as I went around the ones in Dunedin 2 weeks ago and it seems that fish prices are about 20% cheaper in CHCH.

Alrigth way Discus laid eggs and after a couple of days at the most they get eaten. They get to a stage were I can see a little black dot in the centre. What I've noticed is that some of the eggs go a ligther shade of yellow from the rest and I think that these are being clean off by the pair. Could these eggs be getting fungus? What should I do, My tank room is readly but for the tanks which are still a couple of weeks away. I've not been adding any anti-fungus to the tank so should I do this and what should I use if so.

And now i know were it came from. A Rummy Nose that I purchased, after a couple of days it's tummy bloated and died and then the Gromis got it. My better half will understand why I need another tank to put the Gromi's in now.

From reading I now think this is Dropsy. Scales veiwed from top look like pine cone. Belly's large. white stringy poo's. What do people use for Dropsy. None of the other tankmates seem to have any problems. I've read that these fish commonly have this problem due to poor breeding.

Hi I run mine as a bear bottom for my Discus. I've found them to be good tanks as I also have the 820 and 360 models as well. One thing I would do is replace carbon with noodles and place floss on top of filter trays. This makes it easyer to clean.

Just a quick question. My Discus laid eggs on Monday. After about an hour some turned a ligth brown colour where as the rest stay kinda white. They are on the uplift for my filter and I think that male hasn't got the hole lot fretilized. Tuesday morning all but 3 eggs left these were eaten in front of me. I think the dog got up when my alarm went off and came to see me in my room and give the Discus a fright. This is there second time so the eggs lasted a little longer. Should I leave a night light on? My other pair did there thing as well but as b4 the male eat them as soon as they were laid. I've been given a ugly Discus (pigeon blood-golden & heavy spotted, more black than golden) is it worth while to see what kind of offspring he'll have or would it better to find someone to take him as I have 9 coming in to breeding and another 8 about 3-4 months old. The older ones are all ture strains and the younger ones are mixxed. Through that if I had one of the younger ones come out in a light colour I could see what they would produce together. Don't need the tank space so well keep him for now. That was a quick ?

Redwood orderED some in there last shipment. these turned up abot 3-4 weeks ago but are the common brown/yellow type. Seems this happens often as same problem with CC.

Hi I have a couple of AR tanks with Discus. First replace carbon with noodles in filter tray and place floss over top of tray. when doing water changes just wash the floss in bucket of tank water. Easy to keep keen this way. The rest is up to you. Depending on your local pH level u could add some peat to the filter as well.

Yeh it all started with a 4-5ltr tank of Guppies this then moved on to a Com tank and then Discus and two more tanks, by this stage the S Figther was eating Guppies tails so another tank for this guy and a couple of girls. Total of five tanks now and going to pick up a large unwant Discus tonight so will have to set another one up tonight as well. Don't panic well do 50% changes daily untill UGF kicks in and I'm sure that it's not carrying anything bad. Next is the 10' saltwater tank which I'm not allow till we've paid the house off. Ha Ha if she knew what I'm building in the sleepout I'ld be dead. In the end it all comes down to cost and While a MH would be great will try upgarding to better tubes. GO THE REB & BLACKS..

Oh forgot about the people at animates Scalare and the woman from town who keeps Discus. Just that CC is closer and not what your'ld call a chain store even if there are two shops. need to surpport the owner operator as they have better range. I see the list for Pet world has Blue/butterfly Rams on there it but from December 04 they haven't had any.

Yes have tried them all and every time they order Blue rams/ Butterfly Rams they get sent Bolivan Rams. Question? does the male Bol Ram have a dot haft way down its side and is a little more colourful than the female. They tried there best so purchased them. Have to say Aaron at CC Stanmore rd has been great. Very helpful and doesn't run the others down which some do. What else can I do to get better lighting? what kind of tube should I be using? the Hydro stores stock Growlux, are these better or is this a brand name.

This and my tank is 1 meter tall so i have problems to start with. Have 4 tubes ligthing it but they and just the standard ones that come with the fittings etc in double houseing. Would like to replace them but holding off untill I set up fish room and only have one bill to be told off about. Two bills, two problems. Caryl you seem to get around a bit. Was in Nelson/Marlborough area last week and noticed that price of fish is about 30% higher than CHCH would love to get a chance to see the Auckland stores must be bigger than what we have. Still can't find any Blue Rams in Chch even the LFS that have tried ordering them for me have had no luck but have seen a couple of post from the North Island about them. Do you know of any one in CHCH that I can contact in CHCH about them.

Hi I have some Vall in may tank, sorry couldn't spell hole name but plant is long flat leaved reedy plant. It is rotting due to what I think (after reading) is a lack of Iron. What can I do? This is a Discus tank with about $1k of fish in it so not to keen on adding chem's and killing fish. Other plants are hydofillea(sp), Java fern and about 4 different sword plants. Also the sword plants don't seem to be growing either..
