  1. Depends what type of filtration system you have. If you've got a sump it would be easy to set up an overflow and just have the pump turn off a few times every day. Have a float set up to a barrel/tap/however you want to dechloronate the water to fill it up
  2. Like I said before it's naturally formed and at least 100m squared, how does one go about draining something like that?
  3. Cichlids are also the most intelligent type of freshwater fish, amazing how they interact with you.
  4. Yeah Axolotls were considered but they're not really active predators, they sort of just sit and wait for fish to get right in front of their mouths before they snap. Pacus are being looked into further and we might try an Oscar in there for the summer.
  5. Yeah but Wok those fish evolved like that because it was advantageous to them, and they have an advanced lateral line system to compensate for it. The Goldfish are like that because man has taken deformities and bred them to accentuate it. In the wild their mutant forefathers wouldn't have survived.
  6. The guy has a point, their hoods grow so large that they can't see. IMO they're an aberration and shouldn't have been so inbred in the first place. I'd think it'd be ok if the method in that Goldfish forum was followed, the fish wouldn't feel a thing and they'd be able to exist somewhat functionally. It doesn't sound like the guy on that auction used anesthetisia though, which is pretty cruel.
  7. That sucks Sounds similar to what Snowman was telling me about them though, for some reason you seem to lose less babies if you do less water changes. Live and learn I guess :-?
  8. Aren't Pacu almost entirely herbivorous though? If not that might be an attractive solution, those things grow pretty huge and I'm sure there're some aquarium owners out there looking to offload an overgrown one or two.
  9. It's quite a large pond (100m squared at least) and it's naturally formed so that might pose a bit of a problem. There are some shallow bits around the edges that an Oscar probably couldn't get into (but Gambusia could) so he might have to block that bit of the pond off. It's going to be quite a mission to get them out, he doesn't know how they got in there in the first place.
  10. Yeah I was considering Comets, but was thinking they might be too slow and not aggressive enough. I'll recommend him putting an Oscar in it over summer to sort things out then Caper - he wants to get rid of them so he can put some other fish in
  11. A friend of mine has a pond - not connected to any waterways or anything - that is teeming with Gambusia. He wants to get a predacious fish to put in it to eat them (like an Oscar or something, but obviously an Oscar wouldn't work in a pond in NZ). Does anyone know of any sorts of fish that would fit the bill?
  12. My male's guarding another batch of eggs too, I'll have to let him know that he's slacking off and that I'm expecting those eggs to turn into babies ASAP. We need to beat Billaney! Awesome to hear though
  13. Like Ira, I've got black wallpaper so I don't need any backing handy that.
  14. Luke try putting a bit of Banana skin in the water for a week or so before you put the daphnia in, bacteria grow to eat it and the daphnia eat the bacteria
  15. I've got a book called "The Encyclopedia of Live Foods". There are quite a few little critters than can be cultured to feed fish :-?
  16. Man, Shae's really going to rip you out for saying that. I agree though.
  17. Yeah, I've double dosed it with Oscars, Clown Loaches, Adult and baby (1cm!) GBA, Cardinal Tetras, Guppies, Swords, Adult WCMM's and lots of other fish and it's been fine. It's just the baby WCMM's who died randomly. It was in two tanks too so it wasn't just a random crash.
  18. Dead people. I mean fish. Yeah, fish. *shifty eyes* *walks away slowly*
  19. And watch out, I double dosed with Flourish Excel in my WCMM fry tanks and they all died : /
  20. Maybe he's caught a social disease from hanging out with a bad crowd :-?
  21. The stuff you sent me exploded in my tank that has Co2 and is doing quite well in a 2ft without it (it still has 2 lights though). It's great as a guppy fry refuge thanks again Dubbie!
  22. Madagascar Lace Leaf plants are in NZ. I know someone who has them, he made me promise not to tell anyone though
  23. I don't think Stress Zyme or Melafix are dechlorinators, are they?
  24. You could get another type of loach, they all eat snails I think.
