  1. I think that's just the Chinese Alage Eater that does that, not the Flying Fox from what I've heard.
  2. I find it's like when you sleep in a car or whatever, you just get used to it. That's assuming it's a nice constant noise, for a while I had some java moss growing in the intake of the tank in my room and I didn't realise, it made a terrible oscillating noise.
  3. Welcome back dude 8) Sucks about your new CT, where'd you get it by the way? My male's gone AWOL (Suspected cat involvement) so I'm looking at getting a CT myself.

    gravel

The main plus for having gravel, like Caryl said, is that it provides more surface area for bacteria to grow on, resulting in less of a load on your filter and less of a chance of a crash. This should be especially important in a pet shop, with all the fish coming and going.
  5. Well I ended up loosing the ones from the first and second spawns, I think they just didn't get enough food, even though there were two pieces of courgette and usually some sort of pleco tab too in there at all times. I've captured most of the fry from their most recent spawn and put them in a breeding trap (thanks for the great idea Billaney ) So I can shove food in their faces 24/7. Here're some pics Here's hoping things go better with these guys :-?
  6. Not just any porous media would enable this in freshwater, like you said nitrates stick around usually. There's a bacteria that lives in salt water tanks that turns it into nitrogen gas though.
  7. Couldn't you just use a hair drier on the acrylic when it's pressed against the old TV glass to make it bend to the shape of the front? Or does it require a little more heat than that?
  8. I agree entirely with Ira. Air pumps are dirt cheap and great for circulation as well as aeration. Check out what's on Trademe
  9. I've only ever had one heater jam on and cook fish. It was a jager :-?
  10. The plural for Moose is Moose Alan Guess who else is Canadian
  11. No, no runts are usually cheaper, because they're runts.
  12. Read the labels, see what they say. My guess is that Water Ager just removes chlorine where as water conditioner might have some sort of stuff to add to their slime coat too. Shouldn't need both of them if they both remove chlorine.
  13. My cat ate a needle and string the other day. It's fine :-?
  14. But they wouldn't be live earthworms any more then
  15. Awesome to hear that something finally bred dude, the male should finally let the babies out of the cave in a week or two
  16. Still undecided about where to locate the intake. My main qualm over having one down the bottom is that WCMM fry/Java moss would get sucked into it, but on the other hand skimmers are pretty expensive. Got any DIY diagrams for skimmers, Bill?
  17. I had a male guppy that had a similar problem, I euthanised him right away when I realised something was up, it's just not worth it to risk the entire tank. As fishy family says though, don't feel too bad about it, it wasn't your fault. Things like this happen to the best of us
  18. Yeap you're right about that Chimera, I think their exoskeleton is indigestable to most fish too.
  19. Just the two, from what I've seen. The littlies are getting to look like real fish now, not just little dots with tails I'll get some pics soon
  20. This is exactly why I'm in favour of moving most of the population of humans to colonise the moon.
  21. Awesome! Thanks Bill. That's more or less the design I was going for but I hadn't thought of the elbows on the top/bottom, great ideas. Instead of scouring pads I'm going to use Scoria though, should last a bit longer
  22. We're going to be putting a pond in our back yard in a few months and I was wondering which method of intake you guys think is better, to have skimmer or have it on the bottom. The filter's going to just be a barrell with lava rock in it and a submersable pump connected to the outlet. I've drawn some crude pictures so you get the jist of what I mean: Skimmer Bottom of the pond
  23. Some shops don't buy from the public, just ask them. Say I've got x number of baby whatever's and I want to sell them. Haggle, always haggle. Especially if you've got high demand fish (gba's, kilies, etc)
  24. Dude that's a White Cloud Mountain Minnow It'd be fine in an unheated tank, will live longer in one too (their metabolism increases with temperature).
