    GBA with a spot

I've bred probably a few thousand GBA's and from several pairs of all gold GBA's they all seem to occasionaly spit 1 or 2 with black spots, i've had them with up to 3 spots which on younger ones can look pretty cool, seems that when younger the spots are a dark black but as they get older they fade to a lighter colour. I started putting the spotted ones into a seperate tank to see if i could breed golden black spotted ancistrus but they spit mainly normal golds with the occasional spotted one the same as standard GBAs.
  2. I tried adult GBA's with my pair of oscars and the GBA's were definetly not happy, they constantly hid where the oscars couldn't get at them so suffered food wise, i took them out after 5 days as they hadn't moved from the hiding spot and wouldn't eat. I doubt if the fry will survive.
  3. I know time is precious but i think someone standing just outside their doorway with a sign or banner encouraging people not to buy from them & listing the reasons why may have some effect.
  4. How long has the carbon filter been in there?
  5. Mate, gutting news, makes me have second thoughts on the near 1000ltr im planning on doing in the lounge. Wish i could help more but all i have in normal b/nose is 1 male left which you are welcome to.

    BN wrigglers

They should be allright, my swords used to peck at the fry which would kill them but wouldn't eat them. The swords that did try got put into the oscar tank as revenge LOL
  7. LOL , i see you say some? Try getting 10 young clowns at the same size then check them in a year, some will be near twice the size of the others, i've had clowns for 6 yrs and have 16 in 2 4'tanks from 2 1/2" to 9" and on average over their life will grow 2cm per year. Most things grow faster when young and slower when older.
  8. The best snail eaters are Clown Loaches or Yo-Yo/Pakastani Loaches. Clowns will grow about 2cm per year with max of 10"-12", Yo-yo's will grow slowly to around 10-11cm.
  9. I have 3 large Oscars going into a 500ltr tank this weekend, just wanting to know if anyone has kept BGK with Oscars before. The Oscars would be 25cm and the BGK 35cm. Any ideas/opinions?
  10. I have 4 GBA's in my 4ft loach tank, 2 Male & 2 Female, they have fought a few times that i have seen, not sure if it's over hidey holes, the girls or quite what. Seems to be very little damage done and a lot of the time they will roam around within inches of each other and basically ignore each other, i put it down to one having a bad day and being grumpy LOL. Got a few other tanks with from 2-30+ males and they seem to get on ok (that i see anyway) with small tussels but no damage. You may find it's the difference that upsets them, golds don't like normal and normal don't like golds. Probably not but anything is possible. Ideal would be each type having their own tank rather than mixing.
  11. If you keen on a trip out south (Weymouth) i can do you a pair of breedable size (about 7cm) for $40, if your after fry i can do you 10@3cm for $20. If your keen let me know via PM.

    ID please

I'd have to agree on Pangio Oblonga.
  13. Cheers for that, ill let him know and then he can decide then its not my fault
  14. No but there are lots of hiding places they can fit in that he cant and extremely fast, he usually gets 10 neons a week and there is one neon that must be a master of disquise because its survived 2 weeks, 10 neons usually only lasts a day or two.
  15. Has anyone tried keeping these 2 together? A mate has swordtails, guppies and 2 small 4cm angels in a 70ltr hex tank, i thought a male betta would be ok but someone from the LFS he went to said the angels would constantly nip at the betta, from previous experience i doubted the LFS workers opinion so thought i'd check with those in the know....Points at you lot LOL
  16. The standard clowns, striata, yo-yo, angelicious, golden zebra, rostrata and queen. I want to get a 6'x2'x2' and add zodiac and red tailed loaches, the only other inhabitants of this 4ft is a 35-40cm BGK and 1 large angel.
  17. Hi, I have seen similar Tiger Botias at hollywood before but not this particular one, if they are like the normal Tigers i have seen they are quite aggressive, a mate kept one with his oscars, severum and jewel chiclids and the loach used to chase the severums and jewels even with a huge size difference, the oscars could easily have eaten it but for some reason they had a very healthy respect for it. What i classify as a s@#$head fish LOL I have a 4ft tank with 7 different species of loach (30 in total) and would definetly not add one to that, but may end up with one in my oscar tank (520ltrs).
  18. It does ay, i want to insulate my bit of fishroom & seperate it from the garage but have to spend a small fortune to save some money, bit of a catch 22 LOL  Ill shout you some timber when i win Big Wednesday tommorrow night LOL
  19. I've always just scooped them out with a net and chucked them in any of several different tanks i have, anything from swordtails, guppies, GBA & normal b/nose, oscars, bumblebee garras including several different loach species. Even GBA males guarding eggs get whipped out and popped into another tank. If its GBA or b/nose fry i suck them out with a hose, tip the bucket in a net and into another tank they go.
  20. I've got the same sort of dilemma and a mate in the know reckons Wiri Timber is the cheapest, have yet to check them out for 4x2 and ply but worth a crack.
  21. Easy buy a new heater from Pet Planet/Onehunga Pet & Vet or similar store, about $25 for a 300watter brand new, i gave up buying second hand as they either dont work properly or if they do not for long......new = warranty I also gave up on new Aqua One stainless steel ones, had 2 die within a year and even though they are stainless they only have a 6mth warranty. Depending on how many you want you could try Diacks Nursery, i bought 20 a couple of years ago, 150 W, 200W and 300W mix and they were $10 each new.
  22. Ive found that seperating them for a few weeks then put them back together works well.
  23. Thanks everyone, it's put a smile on my missus face LOL (wonder if i should go bigger ) Hi Caper, been busy with work, son, missus & fish, i'm up to 12 tanks now (13 soon ) the b/nose and GBA's just wont stop breeding. I've got 3 community tanks inside (so far) and keep finding GBA fry in all of them, sons 3ft been setup in his room for 3 weeks now and spotted a dozen fry in their yesterday. I'm always poppng in & out but don't often get time to post, bit like now, the missus is asking "coming to bed yet" standard answer.......soon LOL
  24. Just wondering what the maximum weight for a particle board floor would be, my house was built about 1976 but not sure of the thickness of the floor. I'm looking at a 4'x2'x2' 450ltr tank and the missus wants it in the lounge but i'm a bit worried that with substate etc it would be over 500kgs and may go through the floor. Any input/ideas would be appreciated. I don't want to go to the extra cost, hassle, time of bracing the floor.
  25. Their lack of knowledge can be good sometimes, went into a shop looking for a couple of Angelicus Loachs, found them with $28 price tag on them, check the other tanks and was wrapt to see some Botia Kubotai for $14 each LOL Same fish but half the price, so got 3.
