  1. I'm confused about what they want... carte blanch? And this is for 'normal' fishing people?
  2. Hey bud, move them to the bigger tank, the water will stay fresher longer. The pot plants will help too. The Warehouse has got cheap terra cotta pots. Nice work with the auto feeder, much safer than flatmates

    discus beginer

5-6 discus are fine, esp once you move them to the 250L. I assume you aren't getting them full grown. 40L/discus is for when they are adults. If you aren't too concerned on having show quality discus don't worry about going BB. I didn't find it hard to get 0ppm nitrate readings consistently on my 4ft planted maybe I was just lucky? It is harder to keep the water clean however the plants will absorb a lot of the toxins. If your water is hard enough 6kh is ideal, then I recommend you add peat as it is more natural to the discus' wild environment and they will love you for it.
  4. Yea that's good, my 4ft planted is that depth and it's easily manageable, would prefer 60cm, I also have a 70cm and that becomes a bit of a stretch (and I have quite long arms). Nothing is too deep with metal hallide lighting.
  5. Just saw this in the off topic fishroom http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/750mil ... 17200.html
  6. There is no such thing as too big. Bigger the better. They look better, water conditions stay more stable, and the fish love you for it. Especially arowanas, pacus, discus
  7. Thanks Ronnie. That's cool you got to see in them in person! Did you bring any back in your hand luggage with heatpack?
  8. Wow Ant looks fantastic. I commend you on your biotype efforts! We need to see more of this Those fish look realllllly happy
  9. 1. I use my personal mix of PMDD aquatic fertiliser for micro and macro plant nutrition 2. Moonlight wouldn't really affect them aslong as it's not too strong, plants do need a night cycle. 3. Yes, once 02 drops below a certain saturation the fish will die. However, through CO2 injection you can reach during the day over 100% 02 saturation which will help tide them over through the night. Gotta be careful though, often in the mornings before the lights come back on my fish hang near the top for 02. Just waiting till I get a pH controller with solenoid which should fix that. This is of course a pressurised system too.
  10. The sure sign is a "shimmy" shake they do at each other, they wiggle their bodies in a quick shimmering fashion. They will also do the crescent spar, where they face each other, and start at the bottom then move upwards in an arc until they pass each other at the top of the arc then continue in a downwards slope. Roughly like this: / -><- \ Goodluck
  11. Double dose of Flourish Excel worked for me, but it took about a week. Did a really good job and it never came back. Careful though others like Antwan had some stressed fish from it. AquariumPharmaceuticals product called Algaefix (i think) does the trick too, but for me it only ever temporarily fixed it with that product.
  12. It was a great day and special thanks to Animal Shack for staying open especially (cheers Gannet) for us. I hope me buying the gold nugget and a pair of blue rams made it worthwhile
  13. You could try formalin as an antifungus for the eggs instead. What did you do to get them breeding rcon021?
  14. hah yea they'd need it just to get some fresh air every now and then, amidst the smoke and ciggies

    water meter

Wow that would be an awesome tank, I have aspirations of getting a really long tank like that one day. Discus in it is even better. Don't fill it with salt or other large cichlids big no no
  16. So where do we get pure 02 from? Isn't it really hard? As some people could abuse it and breathe it in like a drug. Grumpy Mole Saloon bar use to offer 10mins with it. Didn't last long. lol
  17. I caught my female betta attacking a neon, but it may have been sick to start with? it was still alive, it really nailed it then the fish died and it got consumed by the clowns eventually...definitely keeping a weary eye now. I've kept just a male in the past with a bunch of neons and other tetras with no problem on the other hand, oh one thing is if the betta is red, and you feed bloodworms, be careful as the tetras will attack the betta's fins assuming they're bloodworms.
  18. Like it how there's no gravel... very forresty looking well done
  19. Nice evil_elmo, what's those plants in the foreground? Here's mine a lil while back

    Filmy layer.

Yea that does the trick kermit but if you're injecting CO2 it defeats the purpose as it dissipates in to the atmosphere from the water movement. I had a film for ages in my planted tank too, just to upturn the siphon and suck a lot out but it kept coming back. Once I got my MH it actually fixed it in part because the plants were oxygenating and disturbing the surface just enough, the main thing is the plants outcompeting the algae though.
  21. dogmatix can you tell us more about the drug you use and where you obtain it from etc? Haven't heard of any problems using Praziquantel, from all accounts it's a safe drug to use on fish and very effective. I like treating the whole tank, and nailing worms and flukes at the same time. Trouble is getting hold of the stuff. Definitely is best to redose to make sure all stages of the fluke are killed. As an aside, there's suspicions that using flubendazole (worm killer) can cause tail standing and may lead to death here: http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?t=30488 Of course you always want to make sure you dose correctly with any medication. For Prazi you will more than likely have to source it from your vet and they'll want to see the affected fish. Then if they don't know I've heard of them rining the LFS lol
  22. Time for some pic relief I think guys and girls... Here's discus garden getting refilled, I love the way the water looks as it fills, looks like a water fall
  23. Sorry to hear your experience Chin I hope you didn't pay top dollar, though I'm guessing you did, unless you didn't go through with the deal? (to put it nicely). Hehe...good Sharn pleased to hear you 'would' spend dollars on quality if you 'could'
