  1. Actually I would pay for really good quality. There was an amazing red snakeskin type discus I remember at living waters in Tauranga once, when they were part of Palmers. Next time I went back it was gone, so I assume it sold, $200.
  2. Some really nice discus here, and you will see on most of them they have a small eye in proportion to their body, it shows they've been brought up well with good feeding and large daily water changes. However....they got some of the grading totally wrong IMO, and some of the fish are not very round (e.g 3rd, pattern; 3rd, unclassified solid colour). With the spotted reds, 2nd should be 1st as from the photos you can see the current "2nd fish" has a much smaller eye, much rounder shape, and the forehead and chin are rounder. 3rd place should be 2nd (Roy's beautiful fish) for similar reasons, and 1st should be 3rd too. 3rd, Unclassified stripes/pattern/spotted has a much nicer chin than 1st and 2nd. Love 2nd unclassified solid colour (white butterfly it looks like). For the red spotted fine lines, 3rd (STUNNING FISH) superceeds 1st and 2nd due to it's excellent dorsal and anal fin transitions, as well as having a smooth forehead and chin, although doesn't look like the best pic of 1st. All great fish in that category. I like 1st in blue/green, note it's interesting this is the category they've decided on...clearly the blue is getting diluted to green.. nooo!
  3. I keep a bunch of discus together at any one time (except for pairs, then they have lots of friends.. their kids ). One discus is always the bottom of the pecking order though.

    Who To See

Hi PJ, I've got a range of killies and you're more than welcome to stop in and check them out.

    Oh yes they can!!

Kia Ora Alans Like brine shrimp, some even have 3rd generation rehyrdation survival techniques, i.e can be wet and dried 3x before hatching. Wicked world.
  6. And a really big one to payback $50 000 of New Zealander's money. Makes me wonder what exactly MAF were up to as they didn't take action for over a year??? That cost probably doesn't involve salary either.
  7. Wow I'm shocked. I had been there and seen the whole set up, so I know what they mean in the article about lighting and particularly CO2 lol, tubes were running all around the roof and room on multiple regulators. Didn't get any plants myself for the record. I must say I'm gutted when I hear any type of fish has died for avoidable reasons, and it is especially saddening that they were an innocent party to the whole thing. Surely MAF in it's infinite wisdom could've held them in a quarantine facility by themselves till they were cleared. But I suppose it's better to be safe than sorry..... :-? I see what you're saying evil, but in all reality, he's jeopardised our hobby in New Zealand, not made it better. The 'what if' is the way MAF seems to work. What if Tiger Lotus' got in to NZ waterways and became a pest? Sad unexpected story.
  8. Most plants will use some of each, but will have a majority bent towards one or the other. Sounds like your plants are lacking in magnesium, the central atom of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight (or in our case artificial light) and is the molecule that makes green plants green. I make fertiliser that gives this to plants in a readily available form.
  9. I'm using single ended 400w 6500k bulbs on my 4 foot planted. I really like it.
  10. Hi notorious yea I think I've got 12 in there, I moved 4 melons to my large display tank (70cm high x 1m long) before adding the pigeons. No worries with the huge daily water changes. Sharn, yea it is more of a marlboro, I believe it's actually a marlboro/melon cross, Ronnie perhaps you can shed some light? Love the white markings. I don't usually like albino fish but those discus look cool. That German grand champ has incredible body pattern and is a massive size. The only things wrong are the eye (not consistently red right through or very bright) and the chin/mouth is a bit messed up. Oh just noticed the dorsal and forehead transition is also bumpy. But hey, I wouldn't complain if it was in my display tank.
  11. I would think of it like would you rather someone died in a car crash or a brain hemorrhage? One's avoidable the other isn't. Just the way I see it anyway, but I know what you mean, if it was a simple cause then it could be corrected. Maybe an ornament or heavy rock or something became displaced and fell cracking the bottom. That happened to a member of our club here, but he was able to salvage everything before it was too late.
  12. at least there was nothing you could've done mate.... i know the feeling i fried 6 discus when i accidentally turned up a heater (with no gauge on it) and it went up to 40d celsius. Even put a thermometer gauge in and forgot to check it in the morning.. got home to the tragedy. I guess it's something we all risk by not being able to be with our fish all the time. You will feel better in time friend.

  14. The bottom pic looks the same just stressed out
  15. Notorious I've still got some more... always a good situation to be in! A shot of red melon pair and checkerboard hanging out
  16. Thanks guys, haha yea I spotted that fly too after I posted Jettin, then I realised my checkerboard was keepin' a really close eye on him
  17. Some more snaps pre-fish and pre-mist, bit earlier on so it's a bit greener, notice some lil white mushrooms too
  18. hehe... no filter on it as just set up temporarily as a biotype display tank, also therefore no need for ferts

    300L pond

Good point Alan, in fact I was thinking this when I looked at my green water tank full of daphnia as the sun beat down, starting to get some good days here in Hamilton, luckily it gets overcast before you know it tho.
  20. Checkboard Pigeon close up
  21. Thanks man, I'm stoked they're a pair cuz they're nice and round, now to find a tank Did anyone see the discus looking straight at you? Their best camouflage 8)
