  1. Ant's lesson has been forgotten already doh! Also it's sentence, not sentance Do you read the newspaper Warren? There's the odd mistake but I find the standard very high for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Note here how I used a comma before the word "and", you would've been taught at school not to use one; however, you should because it breaks up the two last points, i.e it's not "spelling and punctuation", it's "spelling, and punctuation", they are two separate things. They must teach the same thing overseas as I see it incorrect on the net often. Not everyone does the PR writing stuff at university though.
  2. That's the crux of it, can we still understand each other? And if we can well isn't that the point of language in the first place? Certainly what will be lost is a lot of intended meaning, for example emphasis on words is achieved through italics, how many people know that or would bother now when writing anything? It's weird, in the past I knew spellings of words straight off, now I often look them up to check it's right, mainly those dang "i" before "e" ones. Written English is construed to replicate how we speak, like Mystic was saying it helps create pause and break up ideas. Now what happens to the way we talk....... anythink could happen
  3. I picked up a pair from Mt Eden Jansens when our club went there a while back. Here's the male. Not really sure if they're cichlids either, one site said they are from the family Badidae. Another site said "They are of the family Nandidae, not Cichlidae, though they do display some of the same characteristics of the Cichlids - namely the "yawning" and the territorialism." (http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_badis.php) SIZE: To 3.2" (8 cm) HAB: Inhabits still and slow moving water with heavy vegetation in India S: bottom, middle TANK: A tank measuring 24" (61 cm) with a capacity of 15-20 gallons (57-76 L) is sufficient. The tank should be well-planted with plenty of hiding places (flower pots, wood, rocks, roots, pipes, etc.). Use a fine gravel or sand substrate. WATER: pH 6-8 (7.0), 3-16 dH (8), 75-84°F (24-29°C) BEHAV: A peaceful fish suggested for some community tanks. At first shy, this species will gain trust for its owner once acclimated. Under cramped conditions this species may become more aggressive. Do not keep with fish that will compete aggressively for food as this species may starve. Parents form a patriarchal family. (http://fish.mongabay.com/species/Badis_badis.html) Here's a shot of the male and female when I first got them. It is typical for the male to be ventrally concave.
  4. So somehow I've ended up with a lot of clown loaches ... ranging in size from very small (6cm) to very large (15cm+). Who wants to guess at how many I have altogether?
  5. Note in this pic how many other options they had to lay on apart from the heater... (cylindrical plastic weighted cone, terracotta pot, glass sides, plants)
  6. Finally my pair of red melons decided to spawn after a good feast on my home made oxheart! I hadn't fed any to them for a while so I figure that was the catalyst. Also fed some bloodworm for a couple of days before that. They spawned for 40 minutes. They had only previously spawned in a community tank and of course the fry never made it. They're in a dedicated breeding tank now so at last a couple of months later they have done the wild thing. The female laying: The male fertilising:
  7. Well done Alan! Inspiring that you're still getting breeds and trying new and exciting fish. If I can be so nosey, what do you want to avoid this time that you did wrong last time?
  8. Well said. It appears most are in favour of the degradation of the English language... why? I use txt language in txts or if I'm in a hurry in emails but I also know the correct way of spelling most things; maybe it's a worry that society forgets how to spell anything as it should be, but then again English is always transforming so if you can derive the meaning from it then maybe that's okay too.
  9. Looking good Al. Fins crossed.
  10. AquaOne (well at least when they were known as ViaAqua) come with all the material too. I have a ViaAqua750 that I believe is the equivalent of the CF 1200. It's awesome, almost silent, and has gone for years. The only gripe is it's quite hard to get it going again after you've stopped it and cleaned it out, the air builds up, does anyone know about the jebos in comparison to this? I have a hang-on-the-back Jebo also and it's great too. Seems like they're very similar in the cheaper range of filters. As with all cannister filters however, as they are hard to clean, you tend to do it much less often.
  11. Don't know if he'd be too happy about that? I believe you can marry your cousin in NZ but not if you're the same sex. Bummer
  12. I don't mean that it is actually a Maori word but that they predominantly use it to describe a baby. Some actually name their kid Bubba. :-?
  13. Yeap true that mate, I also run MH and CO2 though and I've had a sweet balance for a long time *touchwood* Only thing is you get the green spot algae but a weekly clean of this clears it right up. Looks awesome if you do this the same time as a water change and when you fill it back up it must mix the CO2 really well around the tank as bubbles just fly off all the plants
  14. Yeah you do have to be careful but I find aslong as the solution is pink it's fine. It stops working in the presence of organic material so if you have plants etc you may have to keep adding it to maintain the strength. It goes brown when it's nullified. You may be able to get it at your chemist, I got some there once, it's been on TM before too.
  15. Traditionally I believe it's a Maori term for a baby (either sex). Just while here on the topic of words etc., gender refers to what orientation someone's sexuality is, sex refers to the purely physical characteristics that make up either a male or female. Bubba also featured on Forrest Gump but he was a grown man.
  16. Wow that's good numbers reef, good one
  17. Wicked, looking cool. What kind of discus are you going to put in? How big is the tank? Are you going to try adding some real plants?
  18. English lessons $30/hour over here. I need more fancy plecs.
  19. Yeah Ira's right, there are many O2 molecules dissolving in to the water as the bubbles rise, just as it would with CO2. Do you have plants in the tank and good lighting? Plants provide a very efficient source during the day of O2 to the water.
  20. 5 of those in a 5 ft would be so mean
  21. The reasoning is always, "hey I have 30 already what's one more?" Works every time
  22. I second that! I had 4 Ottos for years... great fish, just mainly stayed out of sight eating away at the algae. They ate a lot at the back of my tank off the slate background I have. One died recently, must've been old age as the other 3 are still fine. I also have 3 flying foxes. I spotted one of the flying foxes eating thread algae today which was great to see (still going to treat it though). Yes they are fragile to water changes, so when introducing them, add them over an hour long period. It's a good idea to do this with neon tetras too.
  23. lol @ Ant, I spotted that too. Hey at least you spelt "too" correctly Did you konw taht Msot wrods can be undresootd if the frist and lsat lteter rmeain the smae? You don't know why, but your brain joins the dots. People spelling incorrectly doesn't bother me that much, although when they spell spell wrong that's always funny. Good to know by the way that I'm not the only spelling and grammar OCD freak out there too hehe Oh yeah lesson 2, an apostrophe follows "s" usually to replace "i", e.g "that's amazing" (= a conjunction for that is amazing). It also indicates possession, e.g "Luke's discus". However, "its" does not have one when it is not a conjunction (for it is), e.g "its wings were long and beautiful" And a more technical one is, if you're writing a number one to ten, you should write it out in the long form, not just write the numbers "1" to "10". The exception is if you have already used numbers elsewhere in the text, then you should be consistent and continue to use them, even if it is within 1 to 10. In this case I would write 1 to 10 as I wrote lesson 2 above.
  24. Wow Great fish man! Good work getting him home to your tank
  25. Snails are good at cleaning up scraps, however they can harbour parasites. I clean all my plants with PP (potassium permanganate) before adding them to my tanks to kill any algaes/snails/snail eggs. Luckily I have none at all in any of my 11 operating tanks (touchwood). I think it's pretty much impossible to get rid of snails once they're in unless you have a small BB tank with no plants. I've always had to overhaul tanks to get rid of them.
