  1. sounds like cyano i've had it on floating driftwood before. i haven't had to treat it tho as some plants i had started growing up on the wood and i just scrubbed it and heavily water changed (was a discus tank tho). bristlenose won't eat it :-?
  2. very well said...imagine bein a cop you gotta deal with the detritus of society everyday...tho powering up the new holdens would be a wicked buzz in hot pursuits. but perhaps they are not involved in many as there a HEAP of car thieves running rampant out there and getting away with it. i've had my car broken into twice, large windows smashed right out and expensive car audio taken both times. even if someone in the houses that were very close heard it and rung the cops the offender/s would be gone by the time they got there. and i wonder, even if they were caught, what would the punishment be? did anyone see that Close Up (I think it was) that featured the guy taking the law into his own hands re car thieves? I missed it and was really gutted as I've done a lil vigilante work myself as the cops certainly will not do it. that show "Busted" by Norm Hewitt was good tho they tracked stolen cars and remotely shut them down trapping momma's pride inside. sux you got robbed at gunpoint man..gotta be a lil traumatic yeah? the tickets are performance based. more tickets more bonus. fair enough, you work hard at your job you get a good bonus too yeah? i thought i'd just point out that if they didn't have this in place, cops wouldbe inclined to slack off as they would have no (monetary at least) incentive to work harder. sure it's revenue but think about the other side of the coin, how many deaths are caused by crashes at speed? you are twice as likely to die if you crash at 120kph than you are at 100kph. in this case the small offence has gone unpunished. in the kahui case a big offence has also gone unpunished. so overall i think we are far too light. these kids will appreciate other people's property when they realise the work it takes to get it there in the first place. Fritzl??
  3. that's what it is (cyano) but the question of how do you get rid of it is best answered with erythromycin... probably need it prescribed tho. crush up the tab/s and add to the water. i believe it can be caused by either zero nitrates or too many nitrates.
  4. argh! that sux... it's great you got the mini back but take into a/c the time and money to fix it up and increase security and also the bad feeling of worrying about it happening again :-? sounds like by their actions they had calculated the steal... girls love horses, ponies etc tho aye so i assume that's why they did it??
  5. hmmm riiiight YUP! best day ever up at whakapapa today it was actually quite quiet despite record numbers of cars up there. Congrats on the engagement
  6. thanks very much for the replies all
  7. heya can you feed saltwater fish microworms?
  8. awesome mate some nice fish in there.
  9. they usually pair for life so you'd need to split them up i'd say. also check for wrigglers.. if the eggs last a few days see if any hatch.. could be male/female. with discus it's very hard to tell what sex they are.
  10. This is the key question. Once again it appears the poster is scared off by the replies? ppl have assumed this person already knows there are lots of different cichlids out there. i'll admit i don't know the diffs between africans and sth american cichlids for the most part and i had to google just to know that africans incl lake malawi, tanganyika, victoria. then again this should probably be in the beginners section eh?
  11. yes, there was a legit one about 1 yr ago down in the south island somewhere....the person ended up sayin that the heater was accidentally pulled out and it died, however my belief is that they said this to withdraw the auction at zero fees and that person was made an irresistable offer (must've been over $1k) and sold it behind the scenes.. that's what i hope anyway! pity no one had the foresight to knowing these would be so rare here and many other places. kinda like the current fancy plecs i guess, not many ppl know the ideal conditions and how to spawn them. zebra plecs for example are found in deep fast flowing water and divers would risk their lives just to catch them
  12. I heard there's some in Tokoroa :D:D :bounce:
  13. I'm keen on the working bee should be cool will come and visit the park probably tomorrow too :bounce:

  15. mmm if only you could know what was going to happen 10 yrs ago!!! would've been good cuz heaps more ppl would have them and be breeding them so you might actually be able to buy some in NZ. tho by the sounds of whispers there's some hope of it happening one day! my understanding is they are not allowed to be exported from their wild habitat as they are endangered. they can be imported into NZ but from a captive source eg a foreign breeder. many have come in claiming to be able to do this but nothing has eventuated for one reason or another eg overseas trader stealing money

    LIGHTS

ideal is 5000k to 8000k spectrum usually about 6000k for planted freshwater tanks similar to sunlight colour. bluer bulbs are 10000k+ and usually used for saltwater tanks. often the bulbs have a common name like daylight or cool white etc HTH

  18. it was somewhere around this price that i heard from a reliable source unless you've heard otherwise from anybody else?!
  19. found that years ago. na they don't have anymore, i heard they ended up selling them off for around $70 ea. rumour has it they could have even been exported to australia. or..... they went to locals (surely some must have??!) and could be in rogan's friend's hands

    Goby's

wow someone here actually had them breed! http://www.myfishtank.net/forum/breedin ... wning.html
  21. oh! sorry to hear that once again that sux. you could use some filter material from your cichlid tank and keep stocking low in the discus tank then you can use it straight away, or cycle new filter material for 2 wks in the cichlid tank then transfer back over to the discus tank. will save you a lot of time altho i imagine you're not in a huge hurry :-? i presume you were doing frequent water changes too yeah?
  22. true you will save on daily line charges. not sure what your gas will cost depends on the company's charges you get it from but i know with mains gas (piped in from the street) it's cheaper than electricity. also rinnai infinity hot water heating (heats it as you go) is cheaper than having a cylinder because a cylinder will heat the water whether you use it or not. HTH
