  1. hmmm 3,500l if it could be made out of glass wouldn't that be an awsome fish tank
  2. I am a huge fan of anything commercial, why? Simply because as you are saying we are greedy but the one thing that everyone has the ability to create is money. Consider the big picture, and supply and demand. As it is we are poluting the ocean and will all eventually wipe out the reefs get them in your tank i say at least they can be propogated from there. as suply is reduced or demand is increases shift in suply curve etc price goes up, this is when there is real commercial fesabilaty. government arn't concervationists they are economists there is a big difference, sell the bloodey sea bed, commercial marine biologists can then take care of these and create a balanced eco system (you might argue that we have that now but that is far from the truth we preserve som species wipe out others that leaves some starving to death and some multiplying so rapidly that they decide to eat somthing other than their natural diet that is how things are getting now and will only get worse)charge people to dive (you might say "but i should be able to dive for free" it is bloodey real estate and we are living in a time of survival of the fittest i say if somone is smart enough to purchase this realestate, earn a great return off it and charge me a fortune for it good on him, obviously he was smater than me to have done it. this is nothing new we encounter it every day eg. how often do you complain about the price of petrol going up again it is an inelastic commodity that has a high demand what do you thik is going to happen?). Admittingly at the end of the day yes we all loose out but we gain in other ways that will yet to be made apparent to us. I know what I said is kinda hartless and i would like to point out (although i do enjoy sea food)that i do agree with conservation i just think it is wrong the way it is set up. Plus I enjoy trying to point out things from the other side of the argument
  3. hi there hope you enjoy this site and get as much assistance from it as the rest of us
  4. no his water was still clear, i don't know exactly what it was he added and yeah i knew i was exagerating saying 14 (as noted) but i have never seen it so high before. but even 10 is way too high especially for a fish that likes acidic water. the other thing is it would be very soft water i thought fish either like hard alkaline or soft acidic never soft alkaline (which is what he has the other thing i forgot to note i had told him to do is keep a towel over the tank to keep light out, i am not sure if there is any basis to that advice i just thought it could help reduce stress and also insulate temperature fluctuations a little also reducing stress
  5. i always remove my white eggs (my parents are young parents) as if the parents don't they will get a fungus and it will wipe the whole batch out, i wouldn't bother moving the filter as it is only the outlet and the flow is good for them unless it is a really really strong current good luck daniel
  6. My friend has just brought a Coius microlepis, He put it into a newely set up aquarium (after being advised that this was a mistake) he has been doing regular water changes and ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are all very low (only a slight detection of ammonia but about 0.5ppm) all in all he has had the fish for 4 weeks now but came aroud today asking for help he said that his fish had white spot but he wasn't sure if it was white spot as it was also on his eye. So i went around to help him (by this stage he had dosed the tank with the reccomended doses of cpv white spot cure, melafix, and tonic salt. the fist test i dont was a ph test and it came around about 14 (that may be a little exageration as my test only goes up to 10) it was the darkest blue I have ever seen in a ph test although the salt would have had an impact on the ph i know the water we use from wet pets is always high in ph and it can catch ammatures out. so i mixed up a week mixture of ph down for him and told him to dose it very slowely for the next few days untill the test comes out green. the problem i have is that I dont think it is white spot as although it looks just like white spot the spots are fluffy more like a fungal infection not a parasitic and is particulaly bad around the edges of the fins sort of like fin rot. the bubble on his eye was a blister and within the few hours from him noticing it to me comming out the other eye had gotten a blister as well. my worry is that with so many things going bad it is hard to decide what to fix first (as i am sure trying to add everything to heal all the problems would just stress him out too much) I have told him to do the following: 1. over the next few days get the ph right (as i am sure this is the cause of it all) 2. do a few largeish water changes (making sure he adds water that is the same temp and ph 7) to get the current meds out of the water 3. add formalin 5% (i think this is for fungal infections please correct me if i am wrong) 4. once all of that is done and he is looking a little less stressed call me and i will go around and pop the blisters with a pin and add melafix and tonic salt can you please advise if this is not the right order to do things in or if somthing i have sugested is a bad idea also will he last a week with a blister over his eye or will he go blind before then thanks daniel
  7. could you not put an upturned pot over the eggs to frotect them (a plastic one with holes in to let water flow through)?
  8. bay view has some nice land with no neighbours warren
  9. remember when doing water changes not to just dump a whole lot of water in as the parameters wont be equil, add the new water slowely particulaly if the water is colder or warmer or a different ph than the water in the tank
  10. another tell tail sign is the underside of their shell at the back is concave it is male convex it is female
  11. i would say the vibrations would be quite stressfull to the fish
  12. have you added tonic salt some people believe these makes the white spots drop off the fish faster to put them in their vunrable state where meds can kill them, be carfull though as i am prety sure bristle noses hate salt in ther water
  13. in the words of al bundy "women can't live with 'em kant kill em"
  14. doesn't the spca have on site vets this would be the best option as it would be much cheeper
  15. lol I had the same thing said to me by my partner -well i was told no more fish tanks and no salt water tank (hence alot more planning and no doing)
  16. so i should buy one of them instead? where do i order it from?
  17. I am buying a skimmer for a small tank and wanting to know if any one has any experience with these skimmers any advice apreciated

  19. when a turtle gets a hole in its shel it is almost immpossable to keep it alive, i hate to say it but euthinasia is the most humane option (although i dont think i could do that myself. make sure the water quality is perfect turtles secreet 4 times as much urine as they do fecees this mesnt although the water looks clear it is full of bugs. if all he is doing is sitting on his basking rock i would say it is almost certinatly too late, if not there is still hope. to care for him he will need 1hr of uv light a day while he is sick (although if it is cold outside it would be better for him to go without light for that day) make sure the container he is in has a lid on it a turtle is a reptile and like all reptiles their living area needs to be a terrium this mean it has to have much warmer humid air than any unlided housing can offer. to check its general health pick him up (hold him like a hamburger) if he tries to get free he is doing ok, if you look in just behind his front feet to his tourso i guess you should be able to see a sort of puffing out as he breaths if you can he is healthy. also make sure you keep him warm turtles lungs are 40% of their whole body this means they are very suceptable to namonia for food feed him 2 to 3 times a day preferably in a seperate container so that you dont fowel his water. they wil eat all meaty foods, but make sure there is no fat on the meat, mince is no good as it has lots of fat. white meats have to be cooked. they love garden worms, as a general guide for feeding one serving should be roughly the size of their head once he is healthy feedings can be dropped down to once a day and things don't ned to be done so carefully but untill then be very carefull as it wont take much to give him a deadly infection good luck daniel
  20. I am a little confused about all these, i understand (well mor like assume) they are all different systems for allowing a more natural random flow (not always in one direction like what you would get with having fixed power heads) what i dont understand is alot (the ones posted recently) seem bulky is there not a system that has an inlet (be it comming from the outlet on your closed loop or return pump on your sump) that then has a chamber with several different outlets that it switches between that then runs up to nice tidy smallish inlet holes that can be hidden in out of site, so the actual mechanical unit (the part that can go wrong) is seperate and can be accessed very easily? or is there something like this if so do most people have the bulky tunze strems for another reason or am i way off in my assumption? thanks daniel
  21. the following is a small list i started to write for myself when i was learning that you may find usefull good luck daniel
  22. i think that may be the best way to go, kinda annying having to get an ro/di system for marine and another type of filter for fresh water
  23. yeah i knew ro water was not an option, i has hoping that there would be a good system that was alot simpler (and cheeper)
