  1. A reef is this thing uderwater that corals grow on (no offence)
  2. not completely true a plant (or algea) will photsynthesise in red or blue light, it is green light that couses algae as plants (or zooxanthelae (sp?)) will not photosynthesis under this light the reason red light will cause alges is that the watter absorbes the red end so there is only green (and some red ) left to be photsynthesised under
  3. I brought an ammonia (fresh water) test kit of tetra today not only was it MASSIVELY over priced but in the instructions they try to explain why their gravel vac is better than a normal one " it sucks out wasting plant matter AND detritus" lol
  4. I brought an online book that had a name somthing like that, It was complete rubbish US$30 it was 70 pages long and was mostly in reference to fresh water despite the name, in all honesty I learnt more talking to the likes of Pies and reef (and all the others that have given me great advice, thanx guys and girls) in 5 mins
  5. You could ring jansons or hollywood in Auckland as I think they sell cured dead rock and will take your creditcard number over the phone but their price will probably be deerer and freight, as ira said is a killer. In fact New Zealand has one of the highest freight rates in the world almost deerer than America which is artificcially inflated due to the mafias interaction If you have time you could buy dead rock and cure it in the sea but it is a big risk and you will get a big cycle as there will be alot of die off, there is a thread earlier by someone who done it. Good luck, Daniel
  6. if your getting an air driven skimmer shouldn't you atlest go counter current which i assume is only just a little deerer? If you do go air driven make sure you get good wooden air stones and replace them often
  7. thanks, I have been told I have to put a ring on her finger before i get my tank, anyone got a donut shapped tank for sale???
  8. Buy them for your wife as a presant, she will love it
  9. I didn't think that would be the weakeness in shop brought tanks (although your assumption is correct). I think the potential weakness is a sudden impact while pressure is on it (say somone throwing somthing at it) or not enough bracing at the top might also be a potential issue. Sorry I couldn't help more & good luck, Daniel
  10. good point, that is the down side to this hobby/addiction it is very easy to dive in on somthing and all of a sudden realise you have to spend three times as much. And when you are finally done you decide to buy more and/or bigger tanks  a never ending spiral,
  11. There are two types of common venetian blind motors the tilt only system and the mono control system. The tilt only system is very low power and wouldn't hold the torque the mono control system is very deer as it goes way over board with the motor (if you were to take this path i would sugest contacting somfy in australia directly as they don't work through autherized agents) Also the wire they use is nylon coated stainless steel fishing wire on motorised blinds, I expect this would be ok as the fans are pulling clean air past down through the lights arn't they
  12. looks nice congrats on doing such a good job hiding them also
  13. I had a similar thing happen to me on a rally once (we went off the road and got berried) and we had to digg bare handed in pricle bushes for 29 minuts to get the car out we ended up comming dead last (quite funny seeing an evo 6 below all the 2 wheel drive cars) and as we lost 29 minuts were 1 minut off max lateness problem is we couldn't get help because that is outside assistance
  14. When I first got my silver sharks they were in a 2 foot tank, that done them fine for about 2 to 3 months scince then they have been through 3 more tanks and are now in a nice spacious 4 foot tank (320L) and are about 25cm long keep an eye on trade me you should be able to get a 4 foot tank off there for about $200 give or take depending on condition Good luck, Daniel
  15. I was told with freezing it they just go to sleep. Good luck to you if you can bring yourself to throwing it against a hard surface I tried it but never could
  16. Thats impressive are you going to quarintine it or put it straight into a tank?
  17. Wow another tank reef, look forward to seeing the pics of this tank if you are going to put the work into it you have put into your reef tank Good luck Daniel
  18. Nice pics, How old is your oldest coral in there?
  19. it depends how long the fish were out for. If the fish were out for some time then the bacterier had nothing to feed off and would start to die off. If they were only out for a couple of hours you will be fine
  20. not sure but i will give it a try
  21. when they say blue i think they mean blue spectrum light as i am sure actinic blues actually have a relatively low waver length. yes the high wave length can grow plants. Plants will photosynthesise under red and blue wavelength spectrums of white light algea will grow stronger under the green spectrum as there is alot of light that can't be used by the plants that the algea can grow under. If you do a search in this forum only a couple of weeks ago someone made a post explaining light, good spectrums for plants and what it really means in laymens terms Good Luck Daniel
  22. yes as do alot of people in palmerston north, the water from wet pets is heavely filtered and cost $1 per 20l personally i think it is well worth while
  23. I have also noticed they are losing their colour first, I just done a gh test and it was 0 dgh could it be that the water is stripping nutrients from the fish, what can i add to increase hardness????
