  1. If you are just after fish then one will be fine, If you want to grow plants you will need plenty more lighting and is dependent on how deep the tank is and how wide (from front to back) the length you just get that leangthed set so it isnt so much of a concern Good luck Daniel N
  2. congratulations, how do you tell the difference between the sexes of kribs'?
  3. unless you are really worried about qualatie or have scrap 10mm glass lying aroung I would just go to a glazier for a tank that small. They can make it out of offcuts (may contain some small scratches) and will cost very little to make infact will probably be cheeper than making it yourself silicone will be nice and tidy and you wont waist any of your time
  4. I think the regulations in regard to taking anything from the sea are quite strickt so be carefull, If you are after somthing like mud skippers then yes you do need to create a shaw although i think they can live happily in a tank without one
  5. I Have JBL test kits for my freshwater tank and find it excelent, I have aquarium pharmasuticals tests for my saltwater tank and they seem ok but i haven't ever tested with 2 tests to check accuracey I also have JBL dab sticks (does PH, KH, GH, NO2, NO3 & NH3/NH4 on one stick) for my freshwater tank, These are expencive and very unaccurate I use them for a general idea of how things are going if I am too bussy to do a full set of tests
  6. how cool someone should have a tank specifically for growing these things, How large can they grow in the wild????

yeah sea salt is all good but all you need is tonic salt or rock salt. as long as it sais "contains no iodine" or "contains no freeflowing agents" I use "red sea, sea salt because it is what I have for my native marine tank and for the little amount used it isnt worth holding 2 different types (especially got confused and used the wrong one )
  8. sory to hear I hate it when fish die especially i they have become a houshole pet and are like a family member
  9. Good to hear things are progressing nicely will look forward to some photos when it is all finished so when are you updating the thread on your new tank pies????
  10. Hi Fay are we going to see pic's?????
  11. Hows it all going chem is it all finished yet??? Did you know you have the longest running thread, man i think i have too much time on my hands time to get a job i think (well buy a company and have a job come with it )
  12. just thought I would re-fresh this thread it is that oldest 'replied to' thread on here
  13. not another colum i am strugeling to comprehend all the information in the chemistry column
  14. I forget who it is but there is somone on reef central that has an 850 gal reef tank (i'm sure you all know who i am talking about) that had one in his tank and caught it eating his corals. I will point out that I have no experience in this I am only going off what I read and as ira said this could be fad not fact
  15. If you are not wanting to put anything special in it then a simple set up is good enough ie tank (hopfully one that holds water without leaking ) substrate some rocks a filter that is all I have. If you could get your hands on some black coral (this is unique in many ways in New Zealand) you would need a very good set up but due to the fact that I think it would be highly illegal to try and grow it and immoral as it is so rear and would be wrong to try
  16. It would have to be one of my favorite tanks. I keep hermit crabs, starfish, mud crabs, glass shrimp, and 2 black fish and 3 grey fish they have real character. I have had it at least 6 months now and i adopt the do nothing wreck nothing theory. I do a water change every now and then and other than that nothing and they all live well and happy if you want you are welcom to come around some time and see it PM me if you want to arrange A time to come around
  17. but in saying that it is still unnatural and I wouldnt reccomend it remeber you have to be carefull what you put with sea horses even a starfish will grip to the side and eat the sea horse
  18. gobbies are a hardy fish and come from all temperatures of water
  19. Does any one know if the new pet store opening in Napier is oppening this labour weekend still?
  20. may also pose a problem that S.G is variable by temperature so salinity is actually different in colder water
  21. yeah although last time i was in there he was talking to somone that said the seahorses were eating all the food, sort of make scense as the clowns metablisim would be slowed right down
  22. Do you know how many spawns it takes to get from hybreds to purebreds (in practicality not theorey) I ask because I had a whole lot of guppie babies and some are bringing out some nice colours I was thinking of taking all of these out seperating them and trying to pull out the nice colours and get purebreds P.S. I am not sure if this is as easy as it sounds it has been about 10 years since I learnt about genetics at 4th fourm level

oh yeah make sure there is NO iodine and no free flowing agents most lfs sell clean tonic salt safe for aquaria and it isnt expencive at all. I also add it when I have a fish that has a wound and needs melafix it is brilliant and cleans the wound
  24. I have a picture in my book on how to make a trap to catch these beggers all you need is a pvc pipe two end caps with small holes in them and some bait in there and they will stay in there and you can just lift it out
  25. He has done this before and has customers that have sea horses in the same tank as perc clowns but i don't know if i agree with that they are from compleetely diferent temperature zones
