  1. is the scientific name for a common guppie calle "poecilia reticulata? if so my book sais 23 deg - 26 deg although from what i have heard we have guppies living in our local streems, now if they are livng there then they must be breeding there to support a population level if this is true then you could say they are a temperate fish as our streems get down to about 10 deg c i think maybe even colder
  2. rotfl nice line i am going to have to find a way to use that in a conversation
  3. mork and mindy where did you get the fish from it is very rare to get a bad fish from either wet pets or animates they know what they are doing and do it very well, and one of the employees (owners daughter i think) at tabithas is in the p nth aquarium club. It could be that you didn't acclimatize the fish properly One thing i learnt that was bad was floating the bag in the water, as a bag holds such a low amount of water the temperature fluctuates way too fast, and as the fish have been to the toilet in there the amonia content with the quick heat jump will posen them (or stress them giving them white spot). I also come from palmy so if you need any help feel free to pm me and ask and i can come around and lend a hand
  4. can these or the active ingreediants be scorced through vets?
  5. Second that it is in my turtle tank that is only half full with water man is it loud
  6. hang on back filter is the same (almost) as a trickle filter/wet dry filter because the water flows through the media and the media absobs water at a higher level than the water there is a much greater surface area allowing beneficial bacteria to multiply at a greater rate than any other filter medium this is why they are so good the best filter i ever ran was a canister filter that then flowed into a breeding trap (i used this simply because it was cheep available and let water trickle out slowely through the bottom) filled with bio balls and I find me milenium 3000 works just as well
  7. I had a BIG sailfin plec and a baby bristle nose and i had to move my bristle nose into a different tank as the baby wasn't getting any food, I also have an upside down cat in with my sailfin and he follows the plec every where who likes to be left alone it is funny watching him chase the plec around and then get chassed when the ples gets really annoyed
  8. yeah sorry forgot to include that part
  9. trailors are made on top of car axels usually so they can hold a tonne (or ton ) what you need to watch out for is weather or not it has a trailor break remember a ton of enersia (however you spel it) or momentum im not a physicest on the back of your car when you are breaking can cause catastrophic damage (trust me I co-drive rally cars and have had plenty of fun towing cars )
  10. I have just purchased a "milenium 3000" for my turtle tank that holds 120l. It pumps 1100l per hour (remember this figure is at 0 head height with no media so if it has to pull the water up a little and through media you lose some flow my actual flow is about 850-900l measured amount per hour) cost was $80 and is brilliant it has cleared up the water amazingly and would definatly recomend one, the only con with using it for a turtle tank is that the turtle tank is only half full with water so the water comming out of the filter has about 200mm to drop before hitting the water so we get a loud running water noise in our lounge (but this wouldnt be the case with a fish tank as the water level is near the top good luck Daniel
  11. I think there is someone in new zealand breeding them, so I am going to wait untill they rear a batch. I feel it is more equitable to buy captive bred fish than condone importing an endagered (or getting) species as i'm sure everyone does. Although would be interested in trying to breed them if there wasn't anyone in New Zealand breeding them
  12. ah really, I always thought they were the same thing  at least i wont make that mistake again cheers, daniel
  13. does defrosting them first help them float for longer? my old pantadon buterfly loved blood worms and would eat them out of my hand my new one is young and not yet hand feeding he also doesn't get a chance to try the blood worms as they sink before he gets a chance to take a bite
  14. sorry mis read i thought i saw 14000 liters (1st day of work after a 2 month holiday so im half naked ) re the metric imperial thing never really cared to switch with ton and tonne as they are still the same thing
  15. Collection of water - 1400 litres + is quite a few trips to the ocean, or 6 days of making water! So expect this to happen over quite a few weeks
  16. there is a thread in the chemistry forum on rc about dom and pom that from it has a link explaining ro/di in great detail and how it works relative to a reef tank (a little off the point but thought you may be interested)
  17. DI is actually bad for fresh water fish it pulls nutrients out of the fish (somthing to do with the mucas layer and osmosis) and can kill them
  18. You also add alot of phospahte to your water by adding it frozen, no idea why just what i read I still add mine frozen though
  19. mork n mindy, wet pets sell well filterd water for $1 per 20l container. If you have your own water filter that will be fine you wont need to worrie about buying water. I don't think tap water is good enough unfiltered. If you fill a container with filtered water and let it sit in your warmest room then you can get away without heating it as long as you add it nice and slow. say 25% over about 10 mins i find is fine. although teperature stabillity is important it isnt a rare occurance for temperature to change as much as 4 deg c. in a fish's natural enviroment.
  20. I am reading a book at the moment talking about using aptasia anemonies in a refuge to reduce nitrates, dont know how effective it is though
  21. Trust me once the full efects of multipul tank syndrome set in you find the money
  22. like haveing a hot shower when you are sunburnt, just treat the pain with more pain is the only way to get rid of it. and if you ever run out of ideas for a new tank design just ask in here and i'm sure you will get about 1000 replys
  23. If you are not going to be filling containers full time with it make sure you get one that has a switch to select ro or ro/di as it is unhealthy to drink de ionixed water (that is if you want to drink it aswell)
  24. The best way to kill them is put them in a bag seal it up and put them into the freezer, as the temp reduces they drift off to sleep and pass away in their sleep no pain for them (so they say). not sure about n.t.d. but i know in captivity neon's are only expected to live 12 months (although i have some that are almost 2 years old and going fine) Good luck
  25. Don't know if you can get them second hand brand new you will be looking at $350.00 - $450.00 well worth it imo
